Structural factors of disability and ageing: spatial patterns in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Mexico is undergoing rapid population ageing, but its pace and intensity vary markedly across regions. This process unfolds amid deep social and economic inequalities, particularly in rural and marginalized areas where limited access to healthcare and social protection increases the risk of chronic disease, disability, and dependence. OBJECTIVE: To examine how demographic ageing, socioeconomic, and health conditions relate to disability prevalence among older adults at the municipal level, emphasizing the structural and territorial factors that constrain healthy ageing. METHODS:

Is age a critical factor for the diagnosis of peanut allergy in children?

BACKGROUND: Peanut allergy (PA) is a significant health concern. Some children with PA may present with a relatively high reaction threshold. However, even in this group the chances of spontaneous resolution are low and there is significant impairment in the quality of life. Newer data suggest that treatment protocols in this group are safer and easier to implement. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify clinical factors influencing reaction threshold and challenge outcomes in PA children, assisting physicians to estimate the allergic threshold and improving the chances to diagnose children w

Edentulism and Individual Factors of Active Aging Framework in Colombia.

BACKGROUND: While edentulism remains a serious public health problem for older adults in Colombia, few analyses have been conducted from the framework of active aging as a part of the positive discourse of aging. This study analyzed complete edentulism and its relationship with determinants including personal, behavioral, and health systems and social services. METHODS: This study included a total of 19,004 older adults. We used univariate, bivariate, and multivariate logistic regression type scores to investigate the relationships between the variables. The personal determinants included bas

Psychosocial Protective Factors in Cognitive Aging: A Targeted Review.

OBJECTIVE: The lack of disease-modifying pharmacological agents for dementia highlights the critical importance of prevention, but known modifiable factors (e.g., education, physical health and health behaviors, depression, and social isolation) do not fully represent potential intervention targets. Positive psychosocial factors predict cognitive aging outcomes above and beyond known risk factors and may also correspond to upstream determinants that open up new avenues for prevention and intervention, as well as for reducing racial/ethnic inequalities in dementia. In this brief report, I summa

The Transcription Factor TCF1 in T Cell Differentiation and Aging.

The transcription factor T cell factor 1 (TCF1), a pioneer transcription factor as well as a downstream effector of WNT/β-catenin signaling, is indispensable for T cell development in the thymus. Recent studies have highlighted the additional critical role of TCF1 in peripheral T cell responses to acute and chronic infections as well as cancer. Here, we review the regulatory functions of TCF1 in the differentiation of T follicular helper cells, memory T cells and recently described stem-like exhausted T cells, where TCF1 promotes less differentiated stem-like cell states by controlling common

Rethinking the Journal Impact Factor and Publishing in the Digital Age.

Clinical and experimental literature search has changed significantly over the past few decades, and with it, the way in which we value information. Today, our need for immediate access to relevant and specific literature, regardless of specialty, has led to a growing demand for open access to publications. The Journal Impact Factor (JIF) has been a long-time standard for representing the quality or "prestige" of a journal, but it appears to be losing its relevance. Here, we define the JIF and deconstruct its validity as a modern measure of a journal's quality, discuss the current models of ac

Age as an independent factor for the development of neuropathy in diabetic patients.

Population aging is unprecedented, without parallel in the history of humanity. As type 2 diabetes mellitus is predominantly more prevalent in aging populations, this creates a major public health burden. Older adults with diabetes have the highest rates of major lower-extremity amputation, myocardial infarction, visual impairment, and end-stage renal disease of any age group. The aims of our study were to assess whether age is an independent factor for the occurrence of diabetic neuropathy (DN), and to evaluate the relationship between the presence and the severity of DN and the diabetes dura

Apolipoprotein E4: A Risk Factor for Successful Cognitive Aging.

Apolipoprotein E is a plasma protein that has an important role in transport and metabolism of lipids in serum as well as central nervous system. Among the 3 common alleles, the ε2 allele has the most stable structure followed by ε3 and ε4 in order. There is evidence for a deleterious role of ε4 allele by atherosclerosis and amyloid beta accumulation in brain and body. The presence and gene dose of ε4 allele are risk factors for late-onset Alzheimer's disease. Apolipoprotein E ε4 may have a role in the pathology of amyloid beta and tau and it has a strong relationship with the early onset of l

Is primiparity a risk factor for advanced maternal age pregnancies?

OBJECTIVE: Currently, more women are delaying childbearing until their 40s.This study compared the pregnancy and maternal features, pregnancy and foetal outcomes between multiparous and primiparous patients. We compared the same factors between assisted reproductive technology (ART) and non-ART primiparous patients because of the high proportion of ART used in the primiparous patients. METHODS: The study retrospectively examined 1680 patients, 35 years of age and older, between March 2008 and February 2015. RESULTS: Comparing the features of these two groups, there was an increased incidence

Is advanced age a significant risk factor for laparoscopic cholecystectomy?

AIM: have been a few reports about the outcome of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) in the elderly patients. The aim of this study was to assess if morbidity and mortality may be increased in the geriatric patients because of high incidence of co-morbidity. METHODS: From November 2000 to January 2009, 146 patients aged 60 years and older who underwent LC were reviewed. Patients were placed into two groups by ages: Group A (age = 60-74 years, N.=126), Group B (age ≥ 75, N.=20). RESULTS: One hundred forty six patients underwent LC for benign gallbladder disease during this study period There w

Relevant factors influencing flatfoot in preschool-aged children.

The aim of this study was to discuss the influence of age, gender, obesity status, joint laxity, and the W-sitting habit on flatfoot in preschool-aged children. A total of 1,598 children (833 boys and 765 girls) between 3 and 6 years of age from kindergartens in the central area of Taiwan were studied. The children were divided into a normal group (n = 733), a unilateral flatfoot group (n = 266), and a bilateral flatfoot group (n = 599), and a multinomial logistic regression model was used to analyze the data. The prevalence of flatfoot decreased significantly with increasing age: 54.5% of 3-y

Stress responses and innate immunity: aging as a contributory factor.

Evolutionary pressure has selected individuals with traits that allow them to survive to reproduction, without consideration of the consequences for the post-child rearing years and old age. In the 21st century, society is populated increasingly by the elderly and with the falling birth rate and improved health care this trend is set to continue for the foreseeable future. To minimize the potential burden on health services one would hope that 'growing old gracefully' should also mean 'growing old healthily'. However, for too many the aging process is accompanied by increasing physical and men

Age as limiting factor of the efficacy of itraconazole for treatment of onychomycosis.

A clinical study was carried out involving 24 patients between 18 and 64 years of age with disto-lateral onychomycosis of finger and/or toenail in whom intermittent therapy with itraconazole was orally administered for 4 months. A follow-up period of 9 months was instituted to monitor the efficacy of the treatment. Clinical and mycological outcome at the end of the study was correlated with a checklist that included age and sex of the patient, site of infection and species of the causative agent. Nails that were free of disease in both gross and mycological examinations were achieved in 58% of

[Growth and aging factors in physiological senility and Alzheimer's disease].

INTRODUCTION: Both the normal and pathological development and involution of the CNS are regulated by an important set of both, 'growth factors' (inducing growth, differentiation, survival, adaptation or plasticity in neurons) and 'ageing factors' (inducing involution, atrophy, necrosis or apoptosis). In neurodegenerative diseases, significant deficits of growth factors and important presence of ageing factors are being detected, mainly in Alzheimer's disease (AD). DEVELOPMENT: In this review, the most important growth factors (NGF, BDNF, neuromodulators, glial factors, etc.) and ageing facto

Age as risk factor for sporadic dementia of the Alzheimer type?

Normal brain aging is accompanied by a slight but persistent reduction in energy formation and an increase in energy demand. Stress conditions aggravate energy shortage particularly in old age. Mitochondrial dysfunction in both ATP formation and ATP release may be assumed to be causative for the reduced availability of energy in cerebral cells leading to diminished cellular work. In this respect, aging may be considered as a contributing risk factor for sporadic late-onset dementia of the Alzheimer type. Metabolically, this disorder seems to be characterized also by an early energy shortage in

Vitamin D deficiency: a risk factor for osteomalacia in the aged.

Deficiency of vitamin D is rare in the general population of the North American continent because of the availability of sunlight, vitamin D-fortified milk, and over-the-counter preparations containing the vitamin. Yet there are among the aged those who are at risk of developing a deficiency of the vitamin because of lack of exposure to sunlight and failure to ingest milk or vitamin supplements containing vitamin D. Four cases of vitamin D-deficiency osteomalacia are described, demonstrating the various findings in the patient history and the physical, radiologic, and laboratory evaluation. In
