A conceptual model for the impact of climate change on fox rabies in Alaska, 1980-2010.

The direct and interactive effects of climate change on host species and infectious disease dynamics are likely to initially manifest\ at latitudinal extremes. As such, Alaska represents a region in the United States for introspection on climate change and disease. Rabies is enzootic among arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) throughout the northern polar region. In Alaska, arctic and red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are reservoirs for rabies, with most domestic animal and wildlife cases reported from northern and western coastal Alaska. Based on passive surveillance, a pronounced seasonal trend in rabid fo

Prevalence of fracture and osteoporosis risk factors in American Indian and Alaska Native people.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about prevalence of osteoporosis risk factors among American Indians and Alaska Natives (AIAN). METHODS: We included AIAN people (n=8,039) enrolled in the Education and Research Towards Health (EARTH) Study. Prevalence ratios were used to determine cross-sectional associations of risk factors with self-reported bone fractures. RESULTS: There is a high prevalence of multiple risk factors for osteoporosis in AIAN, although the factors that are associated with past fracture vary by gender and geographical area. In general, women who reported a fracture reported more r

Impact of a conjugate vaccine on community-wide carriage of nonsusceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae in Alaska.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pneumoniae is a leading cause of invasive bacterial disease and pneumonia among children. Antimicrobial resistance among pneumococci has increased in recent years and complicates treatment. The introduction of heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) could reduce acquisition of antimicrobial-resistant pneumococci. METHODS: We obtained 1350 nasopharyngeal swabs for culture from 1275 children aged 3-59 months presenting at 3 clinics in Anchorage, Alaska, during the winters of 2000, 2001, and 2002, as PCV7 was being introduced into the routine immunization sche

Contaminant exposure and effects in pinnipeds: implications for Steller sea lion declines in Alaska.

After nearly 3 decades of decline, the western stock of Steller sea lions (SSL; Eumetopias jubatus) was listed as an endangered species in 1997. While the cause of the decline in the 1970s and 1980s has been attributed to nutritional stress, recent declines are unexplained and may result from other factors including the presence of environmental contaminants. SSL tissues show accumulation of butyltins, mercury, PCBs, DDTs, chlordanes and hexachlorobenzene. SSL habitats and prey are contaminated with additional chemicals including mirex, endrin, dieldrin, hexachlorocyclohexanes, tetrachlorodibe

An adenovirus linked to mortality and disease in long-tailed ducks (Clangula hyemalis) in Alaska.

An adenovirus was isolated from intestinal samples of two long-tailed ducks (Clangula hyemalis) collected during a die-off in the Beaufort Sea off the north coast of Alaska in 2000. The virus was not neutralized by reference antiserum against known group I, II, or III avian adenoviruses and may represent a new serotype. The prevalence of the virus was determined in live-trapped long-tailed ducks at the mortality site and at a reference site 100 km away where no mortality was observed. Prevalence of adenovirus antibodies in serum samples at the mortality site was 86% compared to 10% at the refe

Preparedness for a bioterrorism event in Alaska. Part 1: Detection and identification of a biologic event.

U.S. military and public health experts are increasingly concerned that the general public is at risk for terrorist attacks. Traditional weapons of mass destruction such as explosive and chemical devices remain the most likely forms of terrorism, however the threat of bioterrorism is also present and may be increasing. An intentional biologic event may be covert and if so, will not become apparent for days or even weeks when many ill people present with an unidentified illness. Health care providers will be the first responders during a biologic attack and will be called upon to diagnose disea

The prevalence of cervical infection with human papillomaviruses and cervical dysplasia in Alaska Native women.

Alaska Native women historically have high rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and invasive cervical cancer. Their prevalence of cervical infections with human papillomavirus (HPV) in relation to cervical dysplasia was determined with a commercial dot hybridization test for seven HPV genotypes. Type-specific HPV DNA, similarly distributed between genotype groups 16/18 and 31/33/35, was detected in 234 cervical specimens (21%) from 1126 Alaska Native women seeking routine care and colposcopy or from population-based lists. The prevalence of HPV DNA declined with age and increased with

Grief and Historical Trauma Among American Indian and Alaska Native Populations: A Cluster Analysis.

American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities face significant social, economic, and health disparities rooted in historical traumas stemming from colonization. These disparities manifest in disproportionate rates of poverty, unemployment, and early mortality among AI/AN populations. High rates of premature deaths contribute to a persistent cycle of grief and loss, perpetuating mental and physical health problems. The current study explores the relationships between grief, historical trauma, and psychological and physical health outcomes among AI/AN individuals who have experienced the

Conducting an implementation intervention study with American Indian and Alaska Native communities: Methodological considerations.

BACKGROUND: Incorporating American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) traditional practices and knowledge into healthcare can support AI/AN health. Drug overdose deaths disproportionately impact AI/AN communities due to colonization, genocide, historical trauma, discriminatory policies, and under-resourced healthcare. Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD; e.g., buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone) are considered the most effective treatment for reducing mortality. Integrating AI/AN cultural practices with MOUD may increase acceptability and uptake of MOUD within AI/AN communities. METHODS

Vulvovaginal Candidiasis Among American Indian and Alaska Native People, Indian Health Service, 2016-2022.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is an infection caused by the yeast Candida that affects more than 50% of women in their lifetime. We aimed to describe VVC among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) girls and women who were receiving care in the Indian Health Service (IHS) system during 2016-2022. We calculated the annual VVC prevalence per 1000 IHS user population and examined underlying medical conditions, previous diagnoses, and antifungal treatment. Among 6 million female patient-years, 70 766 patients had ≥1 VVC diagnosis code (2022 prevalence: 14.2 per 1000 IHS user population). Frequent

Tribal Identity, Pain Interference, and Substance Use Among American Indian and Alaska Native Adolescents.

IMPORTANCE: Substance use is high among American Indian/Alaska Native adolescents. Pain interference is a risk factor for substance use, and identifying potential protective factors, such as Tribal identity, is important to help inform culturally grounded substance use prevention strategies. OBJECTIVE: To examine the protective potential of Tribal identity as a moderator in the association between pain interference and substance use in American Indian/Alaska Native adolescents. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study of 10th-grade students self-identifying as American I

Enhanced burst strength of catechol groups-modified Alaska pollock-derived gelatin-based surgical adhesive.

Aortic anastomotic leak is a potentially fatal complication that can occur after treatment of aortic dissection or aneurysm. Several surgical adhesives have been used to prevent this complication, but all have problems with regard to tissue adhesion or biocompatibility. In the present study, we developed a surgical adhesive composed of boric acid-protected catechol groups-modified Alaska pollock-derived gelatin (Cat-ApGltn) and a poly(ethylene glycol)-based crosslinker (4S-PEG). By avoiding oxidation of catechol groups using boric acid, resulting Cat-ApGltn adhesive formed a strong hydrogel by

Paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins in butter clams (Saxidomus gigantea) from the Kodiak Archipelago, Alaska.

Consumption of toxic butter clams (Saxidomus gigantea) is the most frequent cause of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) in Alaskan coastal communities. This study examines seasonal variation in total paralytic shellfish toxin concentrations and congener distribution in tissues of butter clams collected in three communities in the Kodiak Islands, Alaska: the City of Kodiak, Ouzinkie and Old Harbor. In response to questions from local harvesters, the efficacy of removing particular clam tissues on total toxin levels was also assessed. Butter clam samples were collected ∼monthly during 2015-2020

Seeking Justice: How VAWA Reduced the Stronghold Over American Indian and Alaska Native Women.

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), originally passed in 1994, was successfully reauthorized in 2000, 2005, and 2013. Over time, VAWA altered the environment for many victims who had previously suffered in silence. This article focuses on how VAWA impacted American Indian (AI) and Alaska Native (AN) victims of dating and domestic violence. AI and AN women experience these crimes at a rate higher than the national average, yet they are often denied justice due to the interplay of federal and state laws and tribal sovereignty. VAWA affirmed tribes' sovereign authority to exercise criminal jur

Characterization of an alphavirus isolated from a stranded harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) from Alaska.

The family Togaviridae comprises several significant human and veterinary mosquito-borne pathogens. Two togaviruses (genus Alphavirus) have been previously identified in association with marine mammals, the southern elephant seal virus (SESV) and Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) from a fatal captive harbor seal infection. Herein we report the ultrastructural and phylogenomic characterization of a novel marine togavirus, the first isolated from a cetacean, an Alaskan harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) displaying ulcerative dermatitis. A skin sample was processed for virus isolation on

Giardia and Cryptosporidium antibody prevalence and correlates of exposure among Alaska residents, 2007-2008.

Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. are common intestinal protozoa that can cause diarrhoeal disease. Although cases of infection with Giardia and Cryptosporidium have been reported in Alaska, the seroprevalence and correlates of exposure to these parasites have not been characterised. We conducted a seroprevalence survey among 887 residents of Alaska, including sport hunters, wildlife biologists, subsistence bird hunters and their families and non-exposed persons. We tested serum using a multiplex bead assay to evaluate antibodies to the Giardia duodenalis variant-specific surface pro
