Byssinosis among jute mill workers.

Although byssinosis in jute mill workers remains controversial, studies in a few jute mills in West-Bengal, India, revealed typical byssinotic syndrome associated with acute changes in FEV1 on the first working day after rest. The present study on 148 jute mill workers is reported to confirm the occurrence of byssinosis in jute mill workers. Work related respiratory symptoms; acute and chronic pulmonary function changes among exposed workers were studied on the basis of standard questionnaire and spirometric method along with dust level, particle mass size distributions and gram-negative bacte

Diseases and disorders of muscle.

Muscle may suffer from a number of diseases or disorders, some being fatal to humans and animals. Their management or treatment depends on correct diagnosis. Although no single method may be used to identify all diseases, recognition depends on the following diagnostic procedures: (1) history and clinical examination, (2) blood biochemistry, (3) electromyography, (4) muscle biopsy, (5) nuclear magnetic resonance, (6) measurement of muscle cross-sectional area, (7) tests of muscle function, (8) provocation tests, and (9) studies on protein turnover. One or all of these procedures may prove help

Implementation of Bubble CPAP in a Rural Ugandan Neonatal ICU.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory distress is a leading cause of neonatal death in low-income and middle-income countries. CPAP is a simple and effective respiratory support modality used to support neonates with respiratory failure and can be used in low-income and middle-income countries. The goal of this study was to describe implementation of the Silverman-Andersen respiratory severity score (RSS) and bubble CPAP in a rural Ugandan neonatal NICU. We sought to determine whether physicians and nurses in a low-income/middle-income setting would assign similar RSS in neonates after an initial training p

Epidemiology and risk factors of community-acquired pneumonia in patients with different causes of immunosuppression.

Immunosuppression constitutes a significant risk for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Nevertheless, specific causes of immunosuppression and their relevance for incidence, etiology and prognosis of CAP are insufficiently investigated. We conducted a population-based cohort study within a statutory health insurance in Germany from 2015 to 2018. CAP was retrieved by ICD-10-GM codes. Episodes of immunosuppression were identified by coded conditions (hematologic neoplasms, stem cell or organ transplantation, neutropenia, HIV, primary immunosuppressive syndromes) or treatments (immunosuppressants

CPAP failure in the management of preterm neonates with respiratory distress syndrome where surfactant is scarce. A prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: The mainstay in the management of preterm neonates with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) include early Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), timely surfactant replacement and mechanical ventilation. Preterm neonates with RDS who fail CPAP are at higher risk for chronic lung disease as well as death. Unfortunately, in low resource settings CPAP may be the only treatment available for these neonates. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of CPAP failure among premature newborns with RDS and associated factors. METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study over t

Concentration, Size Distribution, and Infectivity of Airborne Particles Carrying Swine Viruses.

When pathogens become airborne, they travel associated with particles of different size and composition. Particle size determines the distance across which pathogens can be transported, as well as the site of deposition and the survivability of the pathogen. Despite the importance of this information, the size distribution of particles bearing viruses emitted by infectious animals remains unknown. In this study we characterized the concentration and size distribution of inhalable particles that transport influenza A virus (IAV), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), and

Factors associated with unmet healthcare needs among community-dwelling older adults in South Korea: a cross-sectional study using KNHANES 2023.

BACKGROUND: Unmet healthcare needs (UHN), defined as perceived need for medical care that is not obtained, are a key indicator of access barriers among older adults. Using recent nationally representative data, this study examined factors associated with UHN among community-dwelling older adults in South Korea within Andersen’s behavioral model framework. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional complex-sample analysis of the 2023 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES; public release December 2024). Adults aged ≥ 65 years with complete data were included (weighted anal

Cumulative Anticholinergic Burden and its Predictors among Older Adults with Alzheimer's Disease Initiating Cholinesterase Inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: Cumulative anticholinergic burden refers to the cumulative effect of multiple medications with anticholinergic properties. However, concomitant use of cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEIs) and anticholinergic burden can nullify the benefit of the treatment and worsen Alzheimer's disease (AD). A literature gap exists regarding the extent of the cumulative anticholinergic burden and associated risk factors in AD. Therefore, this study evaluated the prevalence and predictors of cumulative anticholinergic burden among patients with AD initiating ChEIs. METHODS: A retrospective longitudina

Cancer Immune Therapy for Philadelphia Chromosome-Negative Chronic Myeloproliferative Neoplasms.

Philadelphia chromosome-negative chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) are neoplastic diseases of the hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow. MPN are characterized by chronic inflammation and immune dysregulation. Of interest, the potent immunostimulatory cytokine interferon-α has been used to treat MPN for decades. A deeper understanding of the anti-cancer immune response and of the different immune regulatory mechanisms in patients with MPN has paved the way for an increased perception of the potential of cancer immunotherapy in MPN. Therapeutic vaccination targeting the driver mut

Perspectives on interferon-alpha in the treatment of polycythemia vera and related myeloproliferative neoplasms: minimal residual disease and cure?

The first clinical trials of the safety and efficacy of interferon-alpha2 (IFN-alpha2) were performed about 30 years ago. Since then, several single-arm studies have convincingly demonstrated that IFN-alpha2 is a highly potent anti-cancer agent in several cancer types but unfortunately not being explored sufficiently due to a high toxicity profile when using non-pegylated IFN-alpha2 or high dosages or due to competitive drugs, that for clinicians at first glance might look more attractive. Within the hematological malignancies, IFN-alpha2 has only recently been revived in patients with the Phi

Macrophage Activation Markers, CD163 and CD206, in Acute-on-Chronic Liver Failure.

Macrophages facilitate essential homeostatic functions e.g., endocytosis, phagocytosis, and signaling during inflammation, and express a variety of scavenger receptors including CD163 and CD206, which are upregulated in response to inflammation. In healthy individuals, soluble forms of CD163 and CD206 are constitutively shed from macrophages, however, during inflammation pathogen- and damage-associated stimuli induce this shedding. Activation of resident liver macrophages viz. Kupffer cells is part of the inflammatory cascade occurring in acute and chronic liver diseases. We here review the ex

Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws in Patients on Antiresorptive Medication With Dental Implants. A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: Patients receiving antiresorptive medication (AR) for osteoporosis or cancer are at risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ), especially after surgical procedures. Dental implant (DI) placement in high-dose AR (HDAR) patients is widely discouraged, and thorough counseling is recommended for low-dose AR (LDAR) patients. However, data on the role of AR type, dose, and duration remain limited. This review evaluates MRONJ associated with DIs, focusing on AR type and accumulated dose, and identifies local and systemic risk factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This review

Survival outcomes and healthcare utilization between immigrant patients and Danish-born patients with hematological cancers: a Danish population-based study.

Overall survival (OS) for patients with a hematological cancer may differ between immigrant and Danish-born patients due to disparities in socioeconomic status, health literacy, and language proficiency. This cohort study aimed to investigate survival and hospitalization according to immigrant status while controlling for confounders. Patients with newly diagnosed hematological cancer in 2000-2020 were identified in the Danish nationwide hematological registers and stratified into Danish-born, Western, and non-Western patients. Patients were followed from diagnosis until death, 31st December 2
