Space: The Final Frontier-Research Relevant to Mars.

A critically important gap in knowledge surrounds the health consequences of exposure to radiation received gradually over time. Much is known about the health effects of brief high-dose exposures, such as from the atomic bombings in Japan, but the concerns today focus on the frequent low-dose exposures received by members of the public, workers, and, as addressed in this paper, astronauts. Additional guidance is needed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for planning long-term missions where the rate of radiation exposure is gradual over years and the cumulative amount

Human muscle sympathetic nerve activity and plasma noradrenaline kinetics in space.

Astronauts returning from space have reduced red blood cell masses, hypovolaemia and orthostatic intolerance, marked by greater cardio-acceleration during standing than before spaceflight, and in some, orthostatic hypotension and presyncope. Adaptation of the sympathetic nervous system occurring during spaceflight may be responsible for these postflight alterations. We tested the hypotheses that exposure to microgravity reduces sympathetic neural outflow and impairs sympathetic neural responses to orthostatic stress. We measured heart rate, photoplethysmographic finger arterial pressure, peron

Psychology of spaceflight: II. Suggested bases of space motion sickness: perceptual disorientation and elevated stomach pH.

Suggested causes of space-motion sickness are inferred from the experiences of a group of astronaut candidates and from the vomit pH values of nonastronauts. Both groups experienced stimulated weightlessness in an airplane.

Safety protocols, precautions, and countermeasures aboard the International Space Station to prevent ocular injury.

The International Space Station (ISS) is a $100 billion epicenter of human activity in the vacuum of space that displays mankind's collective endeavor to explore the cosmic frontier. Even within the marvels of technological sophistication aboard the ISS, the human eye remains a highly vulnerable structure. In the absence of multiple layers of protection and risk assessments, crewmembers would face a substantial increase in vulnerability to ocular injury. Aside from stringent preflight screening criteria for astronauts, the ISS is equipped with ophthalmic medications, environmental control and

Reproductive biomedicine in space: implications for gametogenesis, fertility and ethical considerations in the era of commercial spaceflight.

As the era of commercial and frequent spaceflight advances, the question of human fertility in space is no longer theoretical but urgently practical. Despite over 65 years of human spaceflight activities, little is known of the impact of the space environment on the human reproductive systems during long-duration missions. Extended time in space poses potential hazards to the reproductive function of female and male astronauts, including exposure to cosmic radiation, altered gravity, psychological and physical stress, and disruption to circadian rhythm. This review encapsulates current underst

Physiological adaptation of the jugular venous pulse during long-duration spaceflight.

The jugular venous pulse (JVP) offers a non-invasive window into right atrial pressure. In microgravity, the serial JVP waveform during long-duration spaceflight had never been characterised. Using ECG-synchronised high-resolution ultrasound and a validated AI model, we quantified internal jugular vein cross-sectional area (IJV-CSA) throughout the cardiac cycle in four astronauts before and after flight, with in-flight measurements in one astronaut. Mean IJV-CSA fell significantly post-flight in three astronauts (ASTRO 0: from 0.723 ± 0.076 to 0.453 ± 0.061 cm2, ASTRO 2: - 46.0%, ASTRO 3: - 48

Instability of ocular torsion in zero gravity: possible implications for space motion sickness.

Inherent asymmetries of the gravity-sensitive otolith organs of the inner ear may be well-compensated in ordinary 1 G, but rendered unstable in novel gravitational states. Several aspects of ocular counterrolling and spontaneous eye torsion, reflexes governed by the otoliths, were examined during the hypo- and hypergravity in parabolic flight on the NASA KC-135 aircraft. Among the subjects were two astronauts, one who had suffered space motion sickness during his mission and one who had not. Using an observed separation of scores of torsional instability at 0 G as the criterion, we divided our

Anti-RANKL monoclonal antibody and bortezomib prevent mechanical unloading-induced bone loss.

INTRODUCTION: Bone loss is a major health concern for astronauts during long-term spaceflight and for patients during prolonged bed rest or paralysis. It is essential to develop therapeutic strategies to combat the bone loss occurring in people afflicted with disuse atrophy on earth as well as in astronauts in space, especially during prolonged missions. Although several drugs have been demonstrated for treating postmenopausal osteoporosis or bone-related diseases, their effects on microgravity-induced bone loss are still unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Here, we employed the hindlimb-unloadin

Deep space exploration: Sleep and circadian rhythms in heart and brain function.

During deep space exploration, astronauts are exposed to external environmental stressors, including microgravity and ionizing radiation. They also experience internal physiological disruptions, such as circadian rhythm dysregulation and sleep disturbance. Within this complex stress environment, functional alterations may occur in multiple organ systems, particularly the heart and brain. This review examines alterations in heart and brain function during spaceflight and explores their potential relationships with microgravity, circadian rhythm dysregulation, and sleep disturbance. Space motion sickness: A common neurovestibular dysfunction in microgravity.

This article presents a review of the current findings related to neurovestibular physiology, aetiology, and proposed theories on space motion sickness (SMS) during acute and sustained exposure to microgravity. The review discusses the available treatment options including medication and nonpharmacological countermeasure methods that help to prevent the development of SMS in weightlessness. Ground-based simulations using virtual reality, flight simulations, and Barany's chairs can be applied to study SMS and demonstrate its signs and symptoms to space crew members. Gravitational Influence on Intraocular Pressure: Implications for Spaceflight and Disease.

Spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) describes a series of morphologic and functional ocular changes in astronauts first reported by Mader and colleagues in 2011. SANS is currently clinically defined by the development of optic disc edema during prolonged exposure to the weightless (microgravity) environment, which currently occurs on International Space Station (ISS). However, as improvements in our understanding of the ocular changes emerge, the definition of SANS is expected to evolve. Other ocular SANS signs that arise during and after ISS missions include hyperopic shifts,

Space Flight-Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome.

New and unique physiologic and pathologic systemic and neuro-ocular responses have been documented in astronauts during and after long-duration space flight. Although the precise cause remains unknown, space flight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) has been adopted as an appropriate descriptive term. The Space Medicine Operations Division of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has documented the variable occurrence of SANS in astronauts returning from long-duration space flight on the International Space Station. These clinical findings have included unilateral an

An easy-to-use function to assess deep space radiation in human brains.

Health risks from radiation exposure in space are an important factor for astronauts' safety as they venture on long-duration missions to the Moon or Mars. It is important to assess the radiation level inside the human brain to evaluate the possible hazardous effects on the central nervous system especially during solar energetic particle (SEP) events. We use a realistic model of the head/brain structure and calculate the radiation deposit therein by realistic SEP events, also under various shielding scenarios. We then determine the relation between the radiation dose deposited in different pa

The biomedical challenges of space flight.

Space medicine has evolved considerably through past U.S. missions. It has been proven that humans can live and work in space for long durations and that humans are integral to mission success. The space medicine program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) looks toward future long-duration missions. Its goal is to overcome the biomedical challenges associated with maintaining the safety, health, and optimum performance of astronauts and cosmonauts. This program investigates the health effects of adaptation to microgravity: the nature of their pathologies, the effects of

The use of medicaments in space--therapeutic measures and potential impact of pharmacokinetics due to weightlessness.

In support of the preparatory programme for the European manned space infrastructure, the Long-Term Programme Office (LTPO) within ESA's Space Station and Microgravity Directorate initiated a series of studies aimed at a better understanding of the physiological and psychological aspects of living in space. In this context, in 1991 MEDES (Institut de medecine et physiologie spatiale) was contracted by the Agency to investigate the type and efficacy of drugs available for use by astronauts during space missions to counteract the effects of weightlessness or for medical treatments. This paper su

The brain-eye-liver axis during spaceflight: implications of hepatic dysfunction in spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome.

Spaceflight presents unique physiological challenges, with prolonged exposure to microgravity, cosmic radiation, and psychological stress impacting astronaut health. Hepatic dysfunction may contribute to the pathogenesis of astronaut diseases, including spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS), one of the largest physiologic barriers to future spaceflight. This paper explores the interconnected effects of spaceflight on the liver, particularly focusing on alterations in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, liver injury, inflammation, and compromised biotransformation processes. Microgravity as a contributing factor to venous thromboembolism development: Risks and prevention strategies.

Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) being the third most occurring cardiovascular disease in the world after Myocardial Infarction and Stroke is very fatal. Being a multi-factorial disease, several risk factors in the terrestrial condition plays crucial part in the disease topography. Once exposed to microgravity, the weightlessness influences several thrombotic parameters, thus making astronauts in-flight to develop higher blood viscosity and increased risk of VTE. An astronaut travelling to the International Space Station developed a blood clot in the left internal Jugular vein, according to a rece

Incidence of clinical symptoms during long-duration orbital spaceflight.

BACKGROUND: The environment of spaceflight may elevate an astronaut's clinical risk for specific diseases. The purpose of this study was to derive, as accurately as currently possible, an assessment of in-flight clinical "incidence" data, based on observed clinical symptoms in astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS). METHODS: Electronic medical records were examined from 46 long-duration ISS crew members, each serving approximately a 6-month mission on board the ISS, constituting 20.57 total flight years. Incidence for immunological-related adverse health events or relevant

The case for space as a model of accelerated aging.

Aging is a complex biological and societal challenge, where modest advances can yield substantial clinical and economic benefits. While model organisms have uncovered key mechanisms of aging, their physiological relevance to humans remains limited. Astronauts offer a uniquely informative human model: despite being healthy and highly selected, they exhibit many hallmarks of aging and experience comparable declines in cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, cognitive and immune function-often on accelerated timelines. These changes are largely driven by four core exposures of the space environment: mic
