Internal carotid artery occlusion: association with atherosclerotic disease in other arterial beds and vascular risk factors.

The aim of this article is to investigate the association between internal carotid artery occlusion (ICAO) and the presence of atherosclerotic disease and vascular risk factors. The clinical characteristics and risk factors of 120 patients presenting with ICAO were retrospectively reviewed. All patients (n = 120) had at least 1 of the 4 vascular risk factor (diabetes, smoking, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertension); 2, 3, or all 4 risk factors were present in 14 to 82 of the patients (11.7% to 68.3%), 10 to 39 of the patients (8.3% to 32.5%), and 9 of the patients (7.5%), respectively. Relaxatory effect of magnesium on mesenteric vascular beds differs from normal and streptozotocin induced diabetic rats.

Magnesium deficiency has recently been proposed as a novel factor implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetes complications. Previous studies have shown that magnesium decreases basal tone in normal isolated aortic rings and reduces phenylephrine-induced contraction. The mechanism of this magnesium action is not very well known. The present study was designed to determine the role of endothelium and nitric oxide in magnesium sulfate-induced vasorelaxation in diabetic rat vessels. Diabetes was induced by a single tail injection of streptozotocin. Eight weeks later, superior mesenteric arteries o

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF165) and its influence on angiogenesis versus arteriogenesis in different vascular beds.

PURPOSE: To use local gene delivery to determine any district-specific influence of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF(165)) on angiogenesis and arteriogenesis in arteries of distinct developmental origin. METHODS: Coronary and peripheral arteries were chronically occluded in 30 Pietrain pigs using a percutaneous approach and blinded stent-graft. DNA was delivered to the adventitia in dosages corresponding to 10% of the body weight-adapted amount used in clinical trials. The coronary arteries in 12 animals and the peripheral arteries in 12 animals were treated or used as controls (no oc

Carbon monoxide wash-in method to determine gas transfer in vascular beds: application to rat hindlimb.

The vascular barrier to gas transfer is an important physiological parameter; however, no readily applicable technique exists to quantitate the process. A simple technique to measure the permeability-surface area (PS) product for gas transfer in vascular beds is proposed using wash in of carbon monoxide (CO) and Crone-Renkin analysis. Wash-in experiments were performed on the perfused hindlimbs of male Wistar rats (n = 15) by using CO as a surrogate marker for oxygen and technetium-99m-labeled albumin as the vascular marker. The use of CO and erythrocyte-free perfusate and the collection of ou

The definitive and intermediate hosts of Fasciola hepatica in the natural watercress beds in central France.

Field investigations were carried out over a two-year period in 52 natural watercress beds located in the Limousin region of central France to list the mammal and bird species that frequented these sites. This enabled detection of the definitive hosts of Fasciola hepatica and determination of the prevalence of natural infection in snails. A total of 13 mammal and five bird species were listed in these watercress beds. Adult flukes were found in Lepus capensis (39.2%), Oryctolagus cuniculus (42.0%), and Sylvilagus floridanus (25.0%). No infection with F. hepatica was noted in the five species o

The Battle for Beds before Health: Unpacking the Crisis of Healthcare in Ghana's Low-Income Communities.

Disparities in health services remain one of the pressing issues engaging the attention of many stakeholders. Although this issue is more prevalent in developing countries, the impact of limited hospital beds on healthcare for residents in informal communities remains largely unexplored. This study aims to examine this phenomenon. Within the framework of structural violence and health systems resilience, the study employed a triangulation approach, combining newspaper publications, reconnaissance, and in-depth interviews, all centered on a qualitative approach to inform the conclusions reached

Robotic beds for the treatment of positional obstructive sleep apnea - A randomized cross-over pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Interventions leading to avoidance of supine position and thus reducing the likelihood of upper airway collapse during sleep are a treatment approach for positional obstructive sleep apnea (POSA). The aim of this randomized cross-over trial was to assess the effect of two actuated beds (trunk-elevation and sideward-tilting) on OSA severity and sleep fragmentation in POSA. METHODS: After baseline polysomnography, adult patients with POSA were randomly assigned to two nights of intervention in the intelligent sleep apnea bed ISABel1 and ISABel2. In the case of obstructive apnea or h

Determinants of Harm in Fall Incidents in Hospital Settings With 200 or More Beds in Korea.

OBJECTIVE: Falls are a significant patient safety concern in hospital settings, often resulting in unintended harm. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and risk factors for falls in Korean hospitals with 200 or more beds, analyzing 13,034 incidents reported to the Korean Patient Safety Reporting and Learning System from 2017 to 2021. METHODS: The level of harm was classified into 3 categories: near-miss, adverse, and sentinel events. Hospital-related factors (hospital type, bed capacity, and location and time of fall incident) and patient-related factors (sex, age group, and admitt

A simple four symptom-based BEDS score to predict dyssynergic defecation in patients with chronic constipation.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Dyssynergic defecation (DD) is a disorder of anorectal function characterized by impaired relaxation or inappropriate contraction of pelvic floor muscles on attempted defecation. Based on previous Indian studies, we devised a symptom score (bleeding per rectum, excessive straining for stools, digitation, sense of incomplete evacuation/blockage-BEDS) and tried to determine if it can identify which patients with chronic constipation are more likely to have DD. METHODS: This is a prospective observational cohort study in which consecutive adult patients (> 18 years) with chr

Norwegian parents avoid placing infants in prone sleeping positions but frequently share beds in hazardous ways.

AIM: Campaigns to prevent prone sleeping and other modifiable risk factors have greatly reduced the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome in Norway. Sleep-related infant deaths still occur sporadically and may be preventable. We studied infants' sleeping environments and whether parents followed safe sleep recommendations. METHODS: Parents with infants up to 12 months of age were invited to complete an online questionnaire from May to December 2018. It was publicised by health centres and on websites and social media. RESULTS: We received 4886 responses and 4150 met the age criteria and

Incarceration rates and hospital beds per capita: A cross-national study of 36 countries, 1971-2015.

RATIONALE: Incarceration carries several negative ramifications for population health, while diverting scarce resources from other public goods. At a time when health care systems around the world are strained, the current study investigates the long-term relationship between incarceration and health care infrastructure. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the longitudinal association between incarceration rates and hospital beds per capita for 36 countries between 1971 and 2015. METHOD: Fixed effects regression analyses were employed to examine the effect of within-country changes in incarceration r

Second primary melanomas: Increased risk and decreased time to presentation in patients exposed to tanning beds.

BACKGROUND: Melanoma incidence has increased; the primary modifiable risk factor is ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun or artificial UVR (arUVR) from tanning beds. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patients who developed melanoma after arUVR exposure from tanning beds have unique characteristics. METHODS: A retrospective study of 434 melanoma patients was performed. Patients who consented at the initial appointment completed a questionnaire regarding phenotypic traits, medical history, and UVR exposure. RESULTS: Compared with patients aged ≥40 years, younger patients, especially women,

Periarterial fat from two human vascular beds is not a source of aldosterone to promote vasoconstriction.

Mouse adipocytes have been reported to release aldosterone and reduce endothelium-dependent relaxation. It is unknown whether perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) releases aldosterone in humans. The present experiments were designed to test the hypothesis that human PVAT releases aldosterone and induces endothelial dysfunction. Vascular reactivity was assessed in human internal mammary and renal segmental arteries obtained at surgery. The arteries were prepared with/without PVAT, and changes in isometric tension were measured in response to the vasoconstrictor thromboxane prostanoid receptor ago

Unusual snail species involved in the transmission of Fasciola hepatica in watercress beds in central France.

Four freshwater pulmonate species (Lymnaea ovata, L. stagnalis, Physa acuta, Planorbis leucostoma) were living in several watercress beds known for their relationships with human cases of fasciolosis, whereas L. truncatula was never found. The aims of these studies were to determine the prevalence of natural infections with Fasciola hepatica in snails and to verify if these species might ensure the full larval development of this trematode (with cercarial shedding) when they were experimentally subjected to F. hepatica only, or to co-infections with an other trematode species. Vascularization of the area between free grafts and irradiated graft beds in the neck in rats.

Inflammatory lesions of the vascular endothelium after preoperative radiotherapy often cause healing-delayed healing of free flaps in the irradiated graft bed. We investigated changes in neovascularization in the transition area between grafted tissues and irradiated tissues of the graft bed. We irradiated the neck(30 and 50 Gy total dose) in 102 Wistar rats and then grafted a free myocutaneous gracilis flap to the irradiated region of the neck 4 weeks later. We examined histologically the tissues of the graft, the transition area between the graft and the irradiated graft bed, and the graft b

Oronasal blood, intrathoracic petechiae and pulmonary hemorrhages differentiate prone separate-bed from bed-sharing SIDS cases.

PURPOSE: To compare autopsy findings in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) cases found prone in a separate bed with those occurring during bed-sharing, and to contrast these with confirmed asphyxia and violent death controls. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 313 SIDS cases from Southeast Norway (1984-2021) to assess forensic autopsy findings and death scene circumstances. A subset of cases was selected for blinded re-evaluation, with standardized microscopic examination of lung sections and semi-quantitative scoring of intra-alveolar hemorrhage.
