Seizures are often found in children with fetal alcohol syndrome, but it is not known whether binge drinking during pregnancy by nonalcoholic women is associated with an increased risk of seizure disorders in children. The authors conducted a population-based cohort study of 80,526 liveborn singletons in the Danish National Birth Cohort (1996-2002). Information on maternal binge drinking (intake of > or = 5 drinks on a single occasion) was collected in 2 computer-assisted telephone interviews during pregnancy. Children were followed for up to 8 years. Information on neonatal seizures, epilepsy

Background: Previous work demonstrated that administration of saikosaponin A (SSA), one of the major components of the roots of Bupleurum falcatum, reduced oral alcohol self-administration, a validated measure of the reinforcing and motivational properties of alcohol, in Sardinian alcohol-preferring (sP) rats. Objectives: To evaluate whether SSA ability to reduce the reinforcing and motivational properties of alcohol extends to well-established binge-like drinking paradigms, characterized by intoxicating drinking patterns, in sP rats and C57BL/6J mice. Methods: Male sP rats (n = 48) were exposed

BACKGROUND: Underreporting of alcohol intake can misclassify individuals with significant alcohol exposure as having metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) instead of metabolic dysfunction-associated alcohol-related liver disease (MetALD) or alcohol-related liver disease (ALD). Such misclassification obscures the true burden of alcohol-related liver disease, biases mortality estimates, and misguides public health priorities. This study assessed how correcting for alcohol underreporting influences prevalence and premature mortality estimates across the steatotic liver

An accurate assessment of alcohol consumption is essential for identifying at-risk individuals and informing prevention and intervention strategies. The present study aimed to validate the Italian version of the Alcohol Use Questionnaire (AUQ), a self-report instrument designed to assess both general alcohol intake and binge drinking patterns. A sample of 378 Italian participants (54.5% female; Mage = 26.76 years, SD = 8.44) completed the AUQ along with additional measures assessing binge eating and psychological vulnerabilities related to addiction. Confirmatory factor analysis supported a bi

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms and problematic alcohol use (e.g., binge drinking and alcohol-related problems; ARP) commonly co-occur following stressors and traumatic events. Ecological momentary assessment methods can clarify the functional relationships between these conditions.
METHODS: Twenty-five trauma-exposed combat veterans with pre-pandemic heavy drinking histories completed three daily smartphone surveys for four weeks, assessing binge drinking, ARP, PTS symptoms, and positive and negative affect. Within-person multi-level models assessed PTS and alcohol relationshi

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Alcohol use disorder has been reported in patients undergoing bariatric procedures, but the pattern of alcohol consumption has not been evaluated. We investigated the prevalence, risk factors, and impact of binge drinking (BD) at the time of surgery and during follow-up.
METHODS: A prospective, longitudinal study of subjects undergoing bariatric surgery was included in the LABS-2 registry between 2006 and 2009. Participants with AUDIT questionnaire at the time of surgery and a minimum of 12 months follow-up were included. BD was defined as consuming ≥5 drinks on at least

During adolescence, internal and external factors contribute to engaging with alcohol binge drinking (ABD), putting at risk the neurodevelopment of brain regions crucial for emotional control and stress coping. This research assessed the prevalence of ABD in late adolescent students of Southern Italy and characterized their psychological profile and drinking motives. Translational effects of alcohol binge drinking in the animal model were also studied. Seven hundred and fifty-nine high school students of both sexes (aged 18-20) were recruited. Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test-Consumpti

Background: Life events experienced during adolescence are associated with risk and resilience to heavy episodic drinking (HED; i.e. binge drinking). The current study builds on prior research using latent class analysis (LCA) to examine heterogeneity in patterns of adolescent life events at baseline to HED over the course of three years (4 timepoints) as part of the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA). Methods: Life event classes were modeled using LCA that characterized NCANDA participants based upon their responses to the Life Events Questionnaire (N

Background: Emotion regulation refers to the attempt to influence the latency, magnitude, and duration of an emotion, and to modify the experiential, behavioral, or physiological components of the emotional response. In situations of personal failure, individuals, and in particular those who present a tendency to self-focus, may experience intense emotional distress. Individuals who lack proper adaptive emotion regulation strategies may engage in activities leading to immediate pleasure, such as alcohol drinking, in order to escape the self-relevance of emotional experiences. This self-awarene

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous rupture of the urinary bladder is a rare, difficult to diagnose surgical emergency with a high mortality, there are many causes for spontaneous rupture of the urinary bladder, but we only found 2 reports on this condition in our literature search. A 36-year-old male patient was admitted with "whole abdominal pain associated with hematuria for 5 hours." Our patient did not have a history of definite allergy, but a long-term history of alcohol abuse. This patient was followed up for 1 year, and the cystoscopy recheck showed that the bladder lesion had healed.

The hypothesis that binge drinking is a benign behavior not associated with alcohol dependence, other psychiatric disorders, or problem areas, in American Indians, was tested in a sample of 582 adult Southwestern American Indian males and females in large multigenerational pedigrees. All information was obtained from semistructured psychiatric interviews that were independently blind-rated for DSM-III-R diagnoses. Three main outcome measures were used: the relationship between binge drinking and (1) alcohol dependence and other psychiatric disorders, (2) substance abuse treatment, and (3) four

OBJECTIVE: Construction workers face elevated risks of alcohol misuse-especially binge drinking-due to physically demanding labor, long hours, and limited paid vacation. At the same time, emerging evidence suggests that a larger local construction sector may have protective community-level effects on alcohol and other drug outcomes. This study examines how both county-level construction job share and individual employment in construction relate to residents' binge-drinking behaviors, incorporating individual and work-related mediators.
METHODS: Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey

INTRODUCTION: There is growing recognition that social determinants of health (SDOH) shape health behaviors in powerful ways. Given that risky substance use remains a persistent public health problem, the relationship between SDOH and substance use merits investigation. The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between various social determinants of health (SDOH) with binge drinking, daily tobacco use, and daily cannabis consumption.
METHODS: Using the most recent Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data (2022-2023) we conducted two sets of logistic regression models.

Acute alcohol consumption is known to exert widespread physiological effects, yet the immediate impacts on metabolic biomarkers remain incompletely understood. The present randomized controlled trial was conducted to investigate the acute effects of a single episode of alcohol ingestion on various biomarkers in healthy individuals. A total of 45 male participants were recruited and randomized into an alcohol group (n = 40) and a control group (n = 5) at an 8:1 ratio. Volunteers in the alcohol group ingested 40% Absolut vodka within 15 min. Blood pressure, heart rate, and blood oxygen saturatio

BACKGROUND: The burden of disease attributable to tobacco smoking and harmful alcohol consumption poses a major threat to sustainable development in most low- and middle-income countries. However, evidence on tobacco use and harmful alcohol consumption to inform context-specific interventions addressing these harmful social behaviours is limited in the African context. This study aimed to determine the sociodemographic factors associated with daily tobacco smoking and binge drinking in Zambia.
METHODS: The study stems from nationwide population-based representative survey data collected using

AIMS: We examine the extent to which adolescent and young adult psychosocial factors are associated with variation in the experience of common types of harm (e.g., injuries, violence, sexual regrets) with respect to binge-drinking frequency - termed residual harm.
METHODS: Data were from the Australian Temperament Project, a population-based cohort study that has followed a sample of young Australians from infancy to adulthood since 1983. The current sample comprised 1,081 (565 women). Residual harm was operationalised by saving residuals from models regressing number of alcohol harms onto bi

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), including birth defects that involve central nervous system impairment, behavioral disorders, and impaired intellectual development, which can lead to difficulties with school and employment. A recent study in four U.S. communities found a 1.1%-5.0% prevalence of FASDs among first-grade students (1). Drinking during pregnancy might also be a risk factor for other adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes, including miscarriage and stillbirth (2). CDC estimated the prevalence of self-reported current drinking (at l

BACKGROUND: In comparison to other Europe countries, Dutch adolescents are at the top in drinking frequency and binge drinking. A total of 75% of the Dutch 12 to 16 year olds who drink alcohol also engage in binge drinking. A prevention programme called Preventure was developed in Canada to prevent adolescents from binge drinking. This article describes a study that aims to assess the effects of this selective school-based prevention programme in The Netherlands.
METHODS: A randomized controlled trial is being conducted among 13 to 15-year-old adolescents in secondary schools. Schools were ra

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety (SA) and binge drinking (BD) are both prevalent during young adulthood, a developmental period characterized by heightened social challenges and increased alcohol use. Emotion regulation (ER) has been implicated in both conditions, yet little is known about how ER operates their co-occurrence. This scoping review aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the literature on ER abilities in young adults with SA and/or BD.
METHODS: A systematic scoping review on ER abilities in SA and/or BD among young adults was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for

Rates of binge drinking have converged significantly between the sexes over recent decades, driven by increased rates of alcohol misuse in women. However, understanding of the fundamental circuitry and neurobiology driving alcohol use in females, or how this may differ from male subjects remains underexplored. Here, we quantified c-Fos expression across 40 brain regions in alcohol naïve, alcohol anticipating and binge-like drinking male and female mice. The basolateral amygdala (BLA) was of particular interest given the robust sex differences in c-Fos expression, with female mice showing great
