In this study an attempt has been made to examine the efficacy of meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) using galactosylated liposomes as carriers for mobilization of cadmium from the body of mice preexposed to cadmium chloride (0.005 mmoles/kg intraperitoneally daily for 4 days). Cadmium-exposed mice after a rest period of 8 weeks were administered DMSA intravenously, two injections 15 micromoles/kg with an interval of 48 h, as free form of DMSA, or DMSA encapsulated in liposomes composed of phosphatidyl choline, cholesterol and phosphatidyl ethanolamine (7:2:1; PC-lip-DMSA) or in liposomes

The ovary is a key organ regulator of female reproductive health, coordinating steroid hormone production, follicular development, and ovulation, while also contributing to broader physiological homeostasis. The intricate hormonal networks governing ovarian function render this organ particularly vulnerable to disruption by endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including the heavy metal cadmium (Cd). Evidence suggest that Cd exposure adversely affects multiple aspects of proper ovarian function. In this review, we synthesize current findings on the relationship between Cd exposure and ovarian

Cadmium (Cd) is an environmental toxicant of worldwide public health significance. Diet is the main non-workplace Cd exposure source other than passive and active smoking. The intestinal absorption of Cd involves transporters for essential metals, notably iron and zinc. These transporters determine the Cd body burden because only a minuscule amount of Cd can be excreted each day. The International Agency for Research on Cancer listed Cd as a human lung carcinogen, but the current evidence suggests that the effects of Cd on cancer risk extend beyond the lung. A two-year bioassay demonstrated th

The excretion of β2-microglobulin (β2M) above 300 µg/g creatinine, termed tubulopathy, was regarded as the critical effect of chronic exposure to the metal pollutant cadmium (Cd). However, current evidence suggests that Cd may induce nephron atrophy, resulting in a reduction in the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) below 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Herein, these pathologies were investigated in relation to Cd exposure, smoking, diabetes, and hypertension. The data were collected from 448 residents of Cd-polluted and non-polluted regions of Thailand. The body burden of Cd, indicated by the mea

The present review represents an update about the knowledge of the possible role of Cadmium (Cd) in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) initiation and its progression. ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that occurs in adulthood; its etiology is unknown and leads to death within a few years from its appearance. Among the various possible causes that can favor the development of the disease, heavy metals cannot be excluded. Cadmium is a heavy metal that does not play a biological role, but its neurotoxicity is well known. Numerous in vitro studies on cell and animal models confirm the toxicity o

Cadmium is a heavy metal, and people are exposed to it through contaminated foods and smoking. In humans and other mammals, cadmium causes damage to male testis. In this review, we summarize the effects of cadmium on the development and function of the testis. Cadmium causes severe structural damage to the seminiferous tubules, Sertoli cells, and blood-testis barrier, thus leading to the loss of sperm. Cadmium hinders Leydig cell development, inhibits Leydig cell function, and induces Leydig cell tumors. Cadmium also disrupts the vascular system of the testis. Cadmium is a reactive oxygen spec

CONTEXT: Cadmium (Cd) is a widespread environmental pollutant that is associated with increased risk of osteoporosis. It has been proposed that Cd's toxic effect on bone is exerted via impaired activation of vitamin D, secondary to the kidney effects.
OBJECTIVE: The present study was designed to investigate the damaging impact of Cd in drinking water on bone from biochemical and histopathological point of view.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted on 30, 3-months-old female Sprague Dawley rats exposed to cadmium chloride in a dose of 50 mg Cd/L in drinking water for 3 months. Seru

In situ immobilization of heavy metals in polluted soils using phosphates leads to formation of products which are highly insoluble and thermodynamically stable over a broad pH and Eh range. In this research effectivity of Cd ions immobilization (initial [Cdaq]-4.800 mM) from aqueous solutions by different phosphorus compounds (K2HPO4, NH4H2PO4 and "Polifoska 15" fertilizer) was compared at pH in the range 4.00-9.00 and for reaction times 2-1440 h. The highest reduction of cadmium concentration (>99%), owing due to the formation of cadmium phosphates, was observed for all used phosphorus sourc

Discovered in the early 1800s, the use of cadmium and various cadmium salts started to become industrially important near the close of the 19th century, rapidly thereafter began to flourish, yet has diminished more recently. Most cadmium used in the United States is a byproduct from the smelting of zinc, lead, or copper ores, and is used to manufacture batteries. Carcinogenic activity of cadmium was discovered first in animals and only subsequently in humans. Cadmium and cadmium compounds have been classified as known human carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the

The potential of Picroliv, a herbal extract against acute cadmium (Cd) intoxication, was evaluated in male rats. Biochemical and histopathological profile in rats pretreated with Picroliv (12 mg/kg, oral) followed by a single dose of Cd as cadmium chloride (CdCl2) (3 mg/kg, ip) revealed marked suppression of oxidative stress in liver and testes. The Cd-induced enhanced levels of lipid peroxidation, membrane fluidity and reduced levels of nonprotein sulphydryls and Na(+)K(+)ATPase were significantly restored to near normal by Picroliv pretreatment. In addition, the Cd-induced serum levels of gl

A 15-year follow-up study of 3178 inhabitants (1424 men and 1754 women) living in the cadmium (Cd) polluted Kakehashi River basin was conducted. The results clarified effects on mortality of renal dysfunction induced by Cd indicated by urinary beta-2-microglobulin (beta2-MG), total protein, glucose, and total amino acids. This study used Cox's proportional hazard model. The mortality risk ratio of urinary beta2-MG positive (>= 1000 microg/gCr) subjects was significantly increased in both sexes: 1.35 for men and 1.73 for women. The increased mortality ratio of the urinary protein positive (>= 1

Adult male rats were injected sc with cadmium chloride (CdCl(2)) in a single dose of 7 mg/kg body wt. Twenty-four hours postinjection, exposure to CdCl(2) increased the hemoglobin absorbance of the testes from 0.36 +/- 0.01 to 2.46 +/- 0.02. Pretreatment of rats with chlorpromazine (CPZ) 3 mg/kg ip either for 1 or 2 days before exposure to CdCl(2) significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the testicular damage and the hemoglobin absorbance decreased to 1.03 +/- 0.02 and 0.92 +/- 0.04, respectively. After CdCl(2) injection there was a progressive increase in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspa

The carcinogenic potential of cadmium might be affected by several factors such as smoking, hormones and presence of other metals, such as selenium and zinc. Cadmium was analyzed in breast-fat tissue of 43 breast cancer patients and 32 healthy control subjects. Patients were thoroughly characterized according to such variables as stage of cancer, smoking habits, and number of children. Correlation of cadmium levels with these variables, with hormone receptors, and with previously reported selenium and zinc were all analyzed. The mean cadmium concentration found in breast cancer patients (20.4

Fetal toxicity of cadmium (Cd) is well documented in rodents. However, little information is available regarding the human fetus. To investigate the effect of low levels of Cd on the human placenta and the consequences on birthweight, we conducted a study of 102 mothers and their newborns in an obstetrical care unit. Placental and hair samples were collected at delivery to determine Cd concentrations. The main finding of this study was the relationship between a decrease in birthweight and an increase of newborn hair Cd which varied in the presence of placental calcification. In cases of paren

A slow epidemic of a combination of osteomalacia and kidney damage (itai-itai disease) was first noted in Japan in the late 1940s. During the same period reports of severe bone effects in cadmium-exposed workers in some European factories were published. Cadmium-induced kidney effects and their connection with bone effects were first reported in 1950. Epidemiological and clinical studies in Japan since 1962 have shown that the bone effects develop only at very high cadmium exposures and that persons with low intakes of calcium or vitamin D are particularly at risk. Animal experiments have conf

Cadmium, a placental toxicant in rodents, was studied in the in vitro isolated dually perfused human placental lobule for periods of up to 12 hr to determine if cadmium can also be toxic in the human placenta. Placental lobules were perfused with a modified M199 medium containing 0, 10, 20, or 100 nmol of cadmium chloride/ml added only initially to the maternal perfusate. Every 4 hr, the perfusates in both the maternal and the fetal circuits were replaced with fresh perfusate containing no Cd. Measurements during perfusion were oxygen consumption, net fetal oxygen transfer, fetal pressure, fet

In rats of the present (re-derived) Wistar-Porton strain that are dosed either intravenously (i.v.), or intraperitoneally (i.p.) with Cd (1.25 mg/kg body weight) on day 12 of gestation (gd 12), foetal uptake of Cd is at least 6-fold greater than that reported in an earlier study (Webb and Samarawickrama 1981). Higher doses (1.5 and 2.0 mg/kg body weight) are lethal to the maternal animal when administered i.v., but not if given ip. The foetotoxicity of i.p. injected Cd, however, increases with the dose over the range 1.25-2.0 mg Cd/kg body weight. The teratogenic response, which is also wider
