Percutaneous bone cement refixation of aseptically loose hip prostheses: the effect of interface tissue removal on injected cement volumes.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify whether injected cement volumes differed between two groups of patients who underwent experimental minimally invasive percutaneous cement injection procedures to stabilize aseptically loose hip prostheses. One patient group was preoperatively treated using gene-directed enzyme prodrug therapy to remove fibrous interface tissue, while the other group received no preoperative treatment. It was hypothesized that cement penetration may have been inhibited by the presence of fibrous interface tissue in periprosthetic lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed 17 patients (1

Effect of hand dermatitis on the total body burden of chromium after ferrous sulfate application in cement among cement workers.

BACKGROUND: Ferrous sulfate (FeSO(4)) added to cement has been used to reduce the prevalence of dermatitis in workers. However, the effect of dermatitis on the total uptake of chromium in cement with or without FeSO(4) has not been previously explored. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare the urinary chromium levels before and after FeSO(4) addition among cement workers with or without hand dermatitis. METHODS: Thirty-five male workers were recruited in this study for two consecutive years: 2003 without using FeSO(4) and 2004 after adding FeSO(4). Urinary chromium was used a

The Impact of Femoral Component Cementation on Fracture and Mortality Risk in Elective Total Hip Arthroplasty: Analysis from a National Medicare Sample.

BACKGROUND: Complications following elective total hip arthroplasty (THA) are rare but potentially devastating. The impact of femoral component cementation on the risk of periprosthetic femoral fractures and early perioperative death has not been studied in a nationally representative population in the United States. METHODS: Elective primary THAs performed with or without cement among elderly patients were identified from Medicare claims from 2017 to 2018. We performed separate nested case-control analyses matched 1:2 on age, sex, race/ethnicity, comorbidities, payment model, census division

Clinical outcomes of extended intralesional curettage with cementation without implant augmentation in non-fracture giant cell tumor of bone around the knee.

There remains a lack of consensus regarding the necessity of implant augmentation or fixation after intralesional curettage in giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) around the knee. This study assessed whether cementation alone is effective and safe in GCTB with a non-fracture around the knee. We retrospectively examined clinical data from 14 GCTB patients treated from 2012 to 2022. Outcome parameters were Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) score, postoperative fracture, metastases, recurrence and complications. Of the 14 GCTB cases examined, 10 were at the distal femur and four were at the proxim

Tibial tray cementation is not necessary for knee revision with titanium metaphyseal sleeves: a mid-term prospective study in AORI 2B defects.

PURPOSE: Metaphyseal fixation with porous titanium sleeves in revision knee surgery provides mechanical support to the implant, promotes biological fixation, and has shown satisfactory short- and mid-term results. Cement is commonly used to fix the tibial tray to the epiphyseal area. The objective of this study is to determine whether cement should be used to achieve fixation of the tibial tray with the hypothesis that metaphyseal sleeves would provide enough axial and rotational stability making cementation unnecessary. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Prospective study of 60 patients undergoing knee r

Medium-term results of cementation of a highly cross-linked polyethylene liner into a well-fixed acetabular shell in revision hip arthroplasty.

The present study was undertaken to document outcomes of cementation of a highly cross-linked polyethylene (PE) liner into a well-fixed acetabular metal shell in 36 hips. All operations were performed by a single surgeon using only one type of liner. Patients were followed for a mean of 6.1 years (range, 3-8 years). Mean Harris hip score improved from 58 points preoperatively to 91 points postoperatively. There were no cases of PE liner dislodgement or progressive osteolysis. 1 hip (2.8%) required revision surgery for acetabular cup loosening with greater trochanteric fracture. Complications i

A case report: reconstruction of a damaged knee following treatment of giant cell tumor of the proximal tibia with cryosurgery and cementation.

OBJECTIVE: Reconstruction of a knee damaged by cement packed to cure a giant-cell tumor is sometimes difficult. We reconstructed such a knee by removal of the cement, autologous bone transplantation and distraction osteogenesis using the Ilizarov apparatus. In this paper the results 29 months after the salvage surgery are given. PATIENT AND METHODS: We saw a 31-year-old woman's knee joint that showed osteoarthritic change after curettage, cryosurgery and cementation performed 4 years previously for a giant-cell tumor of the proximal tibia. We reconstructed the knee joint. This procedure inclu

In vivo evaluation of the antibacterial efficacy of polyethyleneimine nanoparticle-modified glass ionomer cement versus conventional glass ionomer cement.

AIM: Cemented crowns are susceptible to microleakage over time. Incorporation of quaternized polyethyleneimine (QPEI) nanoparticles into glass ionomer cement (GIC) may enhance its antibacterial properties, potentially increasing crown longevity. Insoluble QPEI nanoparticles exhibit strong antibacterial activity against bacteria in vitro, especially in provisional and orthodontic cements. However, their efficacy under oral conditions remains uncertain. Given the limited evidence under oral conditions, the present study evaluated the antibacterial performance of QPEI-modified GIC in vivo . SETT

Effect of the contamination and cleaning methods on the tensile bond strength of the polyetheretherketone restorative material cemented with dual-cure resin cement.

BACKGROUND: These days, computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) resinbased materials are being used daily in clinical practice for restorations in prosthetic dentistry. In comparison with ceramic materials, they are characterized by better stress distribution and decreased abrasion of the enamel of the opposing teeth. Consequently, they have been applied as alternative materials to ceramics in various dental restorations. OBJECTIVES: The contamination of the indirect restorative material, which occurs at the clinical and dental laboratory stages, might deteriorate the bon

Incidence of Bone Cement Implantation Syndrome Is Not Associated With Cement in a Modern Series of Patients Treated With Arthroplasty for Femoral Neck Fracture.

BACKGROUND: Bone cement implantation syndrome (BCIS) has been characterized by hypotension and/or hypoxia during cementation of a prosthesis; however, the casual link between cement and the pathophysiology of BCIS is unclear. This study aimed to determine if there is an association between cement and the incidence of BCIS by comparing cemented versus noncemented hip arthroplasties in a modern series of patients who had a femoral neck fracture. METHODS: A single-institution multisurgeon retrospective review of 428 patients who underwent either hemiarthroplasty (HA) or total hip arthroplasty (T

The impact of different bone cement distribution patterns on cement leakage in percutaneous curved vertebroplasty versus bilateral percutaneous vertebroplasty.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the impact of different bone cement distribution patterns on cement leakage in percutaneous curved vertebroplasty (PCVP) versus bilateral percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP). We hypothesized that anteriorly displaced cement increases leakage risk and that PCVP produces a more anterior distribution than bilateral PVP. METHODS: This retrospective analysis included 55 vertebrae treated with bilateral PVP between November 2021 and March 2023 and 60 vertebrae treated with PCVP between April 2023 and September 2024. Variables included age, gender, BMI, bone min

Bone Cement Implantation Syndrome: A Rare Disaster Following Cemented Hip Arthroplasties-Clinical Considerations Supported by Case Studies.

Severe symptoms such as hypoxemia, hypotension, and unexpected loss of consciousness may develop during surgical interventions that use polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), or as it is commonly known, bone cement. Physicians recognize this amalgam of clinical manifestations more and more as a distinct entity that bears the name of bone cement implantation syndrome (BCIS). Trauma cases, especially hip fractures, are seen to have a higher incidence of developing this complication compared to orthopedic elective ones. This research aims to present a detailed description of six severe BCIS cases in ord

Floating Vertebral Body Cement Ball After High-Viscosity-Cement Vertebroplasty for Lytic Defect: Report of 2 Cases.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is an effective procedure for painful pathological vertebral fractures. High-viscosity cement is the preferred choice for vertebroplasty given its low risk of extravasation. We describe here 2 cases of high-viscosity cement vertebroplasty in large lytic defects and associated complications. CASE DESCRIPTION: Case 1 describes PVP in an 89-year-old male patient with L1 pathological fracture from prostrate metastasis. Case 2 describes PVP in a 68-year-old male with T7 and T8 vertebral fractures from multiple myeloma. In both cases, high-viscosity cem

Does the Effectiveness and Mechanical Strength of Kanamycin-Loaded Bone Cement in Musculoskeletal Tuberculosis Compare to Vancomycin-Loaded Bone Cement.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic-loaded bone cement (ALBC) is used to deliver antimycobacterial agents into the focal lesion of musculoskeletal tuberculosis. Although kanamycin is currently used as an antimycobacterial agent for the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, there is no information about its suitability in ALBC. METHODS: An in vitro experiment was conducted with cylindrical shape of 40 g of bone cement with 1, 2, and 3 g of kanamycin. Eluate (1 mL) was extracted from each specimen to measure the level of elution and antimycobacterial activity on days 1, 4, 7, 14, and 30. The quanti

Cemented versus non-cemented hemiarthroplasty of the hip as a treatment for a displaced femoral neck fracture: design of a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: A discussion is ongoing whether displaced femoral neck fractures in elderly patients should be treated with a non-cemented or a cemented hemiarthroplasty. A recent Cochrane analysis stresses the importance of further research into the relative merits of these techniques. We hypothesise that non-cemented hemiarthroplasty will result in at least the same technical-functional outcome and complication rate, with a shorter operation time. METHODS AND DESIGN: A randomised controlled multicentre trial will be performed. The study population consists of 200 patients of 70 years and older.
