Venous leg ulcers can have significant social and economic impacts, and are generally treated by applying compression to the lower limb, which aids in promoting blood return to the heart. Compression therapies commonly involve the use of passive bandages that suffer from issues associated with incorrect application, and although automated solutions have begun to appear; these are often bulky and hinder mobility. Emerging microtechnologies and new materials enable the development of "smart" compression therapy devices, which are defined as systems that use miniaturized and lightweight actuators

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy, tolerability and acceptability of a new multicomponent compression system in one bandage for the local treatment of patients with venous leg ulcers (VLUs).
METHOD: This was an international, prospective, non-comparative, clinical trial, conducted in France and Germany. Eligible participants had a VLU with a wound area of 2-20cm2, lasting for a maximum of 24 months. For a period of 6 weeks, patients were treated with a new multicomponent compression system in one bandage which was worn day and night, providing high working pressure and moderate resting pres

OBJECTIVE: Acute lateral ankle sprain accounts for 85% of all sprains, being generally accepted as the most common sports-related ligamentous injury. There is a lack of consensus about the optimal management of these injuries despite their frequency. The time-honoured mantra of rest, ice, elevation and compression is still commonly used, even though the current evidence for compression is conflicting.
METHODS: A prospective randomized controlled clinical trial was carried out in the emergency department of a regional hospital in Ireland to compare outcomes, in terms of ankle function, pain im

Compression therapy for venous and lymphatic conditions may be delivered via a range of treatment modalities using many different technologies, depending on the patient's condition and needs. Clinical decision-making relies on accurate assessment of the patient, their presenting and underlying clinical condition, skill and training of the applier and the available resources. However, changes in the patient's condition or lifestyle may necessitate re-evaluation of the treatment pathway. Generally, compression bandages and Velcro wraps are used in the intensive acute phase of treatment, with sel

To date, there have been no studies comparing flat-knit and round-knit compression garments for maintenance therapy of lymphedema of the leg. According to expert opinion, flat-knit fabrics are generally recommended for this purpose. Given the differences in the clinical presentation of lymphedema in terms of disease stage and location as well as patient adherence, and, last but not least, for economic reasons, it seems questionable whether all patients with lymphedema of the leg actually do require flat-knit compression garments. Considering technical aspects, published data and our own clinic

BACKGROUND: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a serious life-threatening complication of infertility treatment. Vulvar edema is a disease with various causes and frequent phenomena seen in physiological and pathologic conditions like pregnancy, inflammatory disorders, tumors, idiopathic reasons, and most importantly, in the severe form of OHSS.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report a 26-yr-old woman with severe OHSS, recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone therapy. 8 days later, we observed a mild and asymmetrical swelling of the vulva with severe edema in the right labia. Due to the

Exudate has beneficial effects in normal wound healing but detrimental consequences for chronic wounds. Practitioners need to identify and treat its cause, and manage the exudate and prevent if from damaging periwound skin. Management involves dressings of the most appropriate absorbency and other products, and avoiding maceration of periwound skin; compression therapy is the gold standard treatment for treating oedema and venous leg ulceration. Nurses in acute settings may not have the skills to implement or maintain compression therapy; this article is intended for nurses who may have to man

Objectives: To assess the clinical safety of a new short-stretch 2-layer compression system (3Mtm Cobantm 2 Lite) in patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD). This system combines a low resting pressure with a high working pressure. Methods: A pilot study was performed in 15 subjects with moderate PAOD, i.e. an ABPI of 0.5-0.8. Co-existing chronic venous insufficiency or leg ulcer was not mandatory. All subjects received the compression system which was reapplied at each study visit (days 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 10, 14). The safety parameters were: sub-bandage pressure immediately aft

Most of transplanted organs are obtained from brain death (BD) donors. In neurocritical patients with catastrophic injuries and decompressive craniectomy (DC), which show a dreadful development in spite of this treatment, DC could be a futile tool to avoid natural progress to BD. We propose if cranial compressive bandage (cranioplasty with bandage) could be an ethically correct practice, similar to other life-sustaining treatment limitation (LSTL) common methods. Based on a clinical case, we contacted with the Assistance Ethics Committee and some bioethics professionals asking them two questio

Reference is made to the anatomy and variant courses of the thoracic duct, as well as to possibilities of surgical and conservative therapy. A chylous fistula developed in a 53-year old man after his left shoulder girdle had been amputated because of a recurrent low grade chondrosarcoma. Nineteen liters of chyle were excreted over a 5-week period. It was possible to achieve a spontaneous occlusion of the fistula by means of repeated punctures, compression bandages, and a low-fat diet.

Twenty-seven patients with chronic venous leg ulcers were assigned to two treatment groups. Fifteen were treated with cryopreserved cultured allogeneic keratinocyte sheets and compression bandages and 12 with compression only. The observation time was 8 weeks and the keratinocyte grafting procedure was performed once weekly. The mean reduction of the initial wound area was 35% in the treatment group and 14% in the control group. This difference was not significant. The poor effect on wound healing given by the cryopreserved allogeneic keratinocyte sheets contrasts with our earlier experience u

This article deals with the conservative management of light and severe forms of varicosities as well as chronic venous insufficiency along with subjective symptoms and trophic skin changes. Approximately 40% of the population shows minor forms and another 10% shows major forms of varicosities. The prevalence of advanced stages of chronic venous insufficiency is approximately 3%. Compression therapy represents the mainstay of anti-edema treatment. Elastic bandages are mainly used during the acute phase, and compression stockings are rather recommended to maintain the result. The differences of

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare two different physiotherapy methods in the treatment of lymphedema after breast surgery.
METHODS: This study was performed on 53 patients who had developed unilateral lymphedema after the breast cancer treatment. Twenty-seven patients served as the experimental group and were treated with complex decongestive physiotherapy (CDP) applications including lymph drainage, multi layer compression bandage, elevation, remedial exercises and skin care. Twenty-six patients in the control group were treated with standard physiotherapy (SP) applications in

Oedema is a complex condition, and understanding its underlying causes is essential for safe and effective management. The most common aetiology is poor venous return, and venous disease develops when the veins are unable to withstand the hydrostatic pressure within them, leading to a cascade of tissue changes including lipodermatosclerosis, haemosiderin deposition and venous leg ulceration. The most disabling consequence is often secondary lymphoedema. Under normal circumstances, most interstitial fluid that is not reabsorbed at the venous end of the capillaries enters the lymphatic system an

For a century-old problem, edema and its treatment have gone remarkably unnoticed by the biomedical community. Given the prevalence of lymphedema and its debilitating repercussions, there is an acute need for both efficacy-based measures and clinical standards to guide compression garment design and therapeutic application. This review outlines the current state of the art in compression treatment and suggests an integrated biomedical engineering approach going forward. Characterizing the pressure gradient profiles of commercial compression sleeves is necessary to better understand the role of

INTRODUCTION: Amelanotic melanoma of the foot is a diagnostic challenge for physicians as it often appears as a benign lesion. In order to make the correct diagnosis at early stages, it is recommended to perform a biopsy of worsening lesions that are refractory to standard treatments, particularly nonhealing wounds.
CASE REPORT: The authors describe the case of a 57-year-old man with amelanotic melanoma of the foot that had been treated as a pressure ulcer for 3 months. He underwent wide local excision of the melanoma and an application of skin autograft. After skin autograft failure, optimal

PURPOSE: To determine the effectiveness of venous compression stockings or compression bandages on the reduction of postthrombotic syndrome in patients with deep venous thrombosis.
METHODS: We attempted to identify all published trials in all languages identified by PubMed through June 2009. Meta-analysis was performed.
RESULTS: Based on 5 randomized trials of patients with deep venous thrombosis comparing treatment with venous compression to controls, mild-to-moderate postthrombotic syndrome occurred in 64 of 296 (22%) treated with venous compression, compared with 106 of 284 (37%) in contr

BACKGROUND: Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) or varicose ulcers are the final stage of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), and are the most common type of leg ulcer. The development of VLUs on ankles and lower legs can occur spontaneously or after minor trauma. The ulcers are often painful and exudative, healing is often protracted and recurrence is common. This cycle of healing and recurrence has a considerable impact on the health and quality of life of individuals, and healthcare and socioeconomic costs. VLUs are a common and costly problem worldwide; prevalence is estimated to be between 1.65% to

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Transfemoral arterial access of catheterization requires a method of hemostasis that is always easily and quickly applicable, but also safe, inexpensive and comfortable for the patient. Current methods meet these requirements only in part. The pneumatic pressure-controlled FemoStop system has been described as straightforward and safe. But the conventional procedure has been to achieve primary hemostasis with FemoStop and then switch to a pressure bandage. We here present our method of using FemoStop alone for the entire duration of the compression and compare the res
