Arthropod Bites and Stings.

Arthropods, including insects and arachnids, significantly affect humans as vectors for infectious diseases. Arthropod bites and stings commonly cause minor, usually self-limited reactions; however, some species are associated with more severe complications. Spider bites are rarely life-threatening. There are two medically relevant spiders in the United States. Widow spider (Latrodectus) envenomation can cause muscle spasm and severe pain that should be treated with analgesics and benzodiazepines. Antivenom is not widely available in the United States but may be considered for severe, refracto

Phoenix dactylifera L. spathe essential oil: chemical composition and repellent activity against the yellow fever mosquito.

Date palm, Phoenix dactylifera L. (Arecaceae), grows commonly in the Arabian Peninsula and is traditionally used to treat various diseases. The aim of the present study was to identify chemical composition of the essential oil and to investigate the repellent activity. The essential oil of P. dactylifera was obtained by hydrodistillation from the spathe, a specialized leaf structure that surrounds the pollinating organs of the palm. The oil was subsequently analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. The oil showed promising repellent activity against yellow fever mosquito - Aedes aegypti. Sixteen component

Laboratory evaluation of aromatic essential oils from thirteen plant species as candidate repellents against Leptotrombidium chiggers (Acari: Trombiculidae), the vector of scrub typhus.

Scrub typhus, a rickettsial disease transmitted by several species of Leptotrombidium chiggers (larvae), is endemic in many areas of Asia. The disease is best prevented by the use of personal protective measures, including repellents. In this study commercially produced aromatic, essential oils of 13 plant species and ethanol (control) were tested in the laboratory for repellency against host-seeking chiggers of Leptotrombidium imphalum Vercammen-Grandjean and Langston (Acari: Trombiculidae). A rapid, simple and economic in vitro test method was used by exposing the chigger for up to 5 min. Re

[Protection of travellers against biting arthropod vectors].

Several diseases are transmitted by hematophageous insect/arthropod and, except for yellow fever and Japanese B encephalitis, there are still no vaccines. Personal protection therefore remains the choice method for disease prevention and can usefully complete chemoprophylaxis if available (such as for malaria). Personal protection can be ensured by three main methods: avoiding risky areas; using repellents on skin and/or garments; using pyrethroids insecticide on garments (permethrin), mosquito nets (several Pyr. available) and any other materials (curtains etc.) including camping tents, plast

Effects of DCBA exposure on liver fibrosis and NAFLD: a comprehensive investigation integrating NHANES data analysis, network toxicology, and molecular docking.

PURPOSE: This study examined associations between urinary 3-diethyl-carbamoyl benzoic acid (DCBA), the principal metabolite of the insect repellent DEET, and liver fibrosis (LF) as well as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) using a nationally representative sample. Network toxicology approaches were employed to explore underlying molecular mechanisms. METHODS: We analyzed 5,960 adults from NHANES with DCBA measurements obtained through liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. LF severity was determined using NAFLD Fibrosis Score (NFS ≥ 0.676), whereas NAFLD was identified via se

Tannic acid-assisted fabrication of antibacterial sodium alginate-based gel beads for the multifunctional adsorption of heavy metal ions and dyes.

The existence of heavy metals and dyes seriously affects the ecological environment and human safety. Antibacterial adsorption materials with the broad-spectrum removal of multiple pollutants are urgently required for water remediation. Herein, a sustainable and antibacterial sodium alginate (SA) gel bead adsorbent with honeycomb cellular architecture is developed by the biomimetic deposition polyphenolic tannic acid (TA) induced grafting diethylenetriamine (DETA) under mild conditions for efficient removal of Cr(VI) and dyes. Taking advantage of the catechol surface chemistry, TA occurring ra

Malaria in long-term travelers: Infection risks and adherence to preventive measures - A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Chemoprophylaxis and anti-mosquito measures are key to preventing malaria in travelers. Long-term travelers are at higher risk than short-term travelers, but their adherence to preventive measures is lower. Our aim was to determine malaria exposure risks and predictors for adherence to malaria-preventive measures in long-term travelers. METHODS: Long-term travelers (>12 weeks) completed a weekly questionnaire about preventive measures, symptoms, and malaria treatment abroad. Blood samples were tested for seroconversion to Plasmodium falciparum anti-circumsporozoite (PfCSP) antibod

Pre-West Nile virus outbreak: perceptions and practices to prevent mosquito bites and viral encephalitis in the United States.

Mosquitoes can transmit over 100 of the viruses that can cause encephalitis, meningitis, and hemorrhagic disease in humans (Chin 2000; Gubler 1996; Monath 1989). While much is known about the ecology, epidemiology, and clinical manifestations of the arboviral encephalitides (Campbell et al. 2002; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 1997; Gubler 1998; Hayes 1989; Hubálek and Halouzka 1999), little empirical research exists regarding the U.S. population's knowledge of mosquitoes and arboviral encephalitis, particularly prior to the U.S. outbreak of West Nile virus (WNV) in 1999. Bioactive Molecules Derived from Plants in Managing Dengue Vector Aedes aegypti (Linn.).

Mosquitoes are the potential vectors of several viral diseases such as filariasis, malaria, dengue, yellow fever, Zika fever and encephalitis in humans as well as other species. Dengue, the most common mosquito-borne disease in humans caused by the dengue virus is transmitted by the vector Ae. aegypti. Fever, chills, nausea and neurological disorders are the frequent symptoms of Zika and dengue. Thanks to various anthropogenic activities such as deforestation, industrialized farming and poor drainage facilities there has been a significant rise in mosquitoes and vector-borne diseases. Control

Lyme disease prevention: A content analysis of Canadian patient group and government websites.

The quality of information presented on health-related websites-in terms of comprehensiveness, accuracy and consistency-is a public health concern. To date, the consistency of information across Canadian websites devoted to Lyme disease (LD) prevention has not been evaluated. The first aim of this study was to describe the contents and recommendations of LD prevention websites provided by two types of Canadian organizations: government (n = 3) and patient groups (n = 3). A second objective was to analyse the level of convergence among these websites in terms of their prevention-related content

Removal of trace organic chemicals and performance of a novel hybrid ultrafiltration-osmotic membrane bioreactor.

A hybrid ultrafiltration-osmotic membrane bioreactor (UFO-MBR) was investigated for over 35 days for nutrient and trace organic chemical (TOrC) removal from municipal wastewater. The UFO-MBR system uses both ultrafiltration (UF) and forward osmosis (FO) membranes in parallel to simultaneously extract clean water from an activated sludge reactor for nonpotable (or environmental discharge) and potable reuse, respectively. In the FO stream, water is drawn by osmosis from activated sludge through an FO membrane into a draw solution (DS), which becomes diluted during the process. A reverse osmosis

Pesticides and trace elements in geophagic clay materials sourced in Cameroon and Nigeria: Potential implications on human health.

This study aimed to quantify 28 potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and 185 pesticide residues in geophagic clay samples from Nigeria and Cameroon, and to evaluate the human health risks (HHR) resulting from their ingestion. The clay samples contained notable levels of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, along with pesticide residues ranging from single compounds to mixtures of up to nine. Among these, DEET and several insecticides-such as DDT, permethrin, and HCH-were detected. Three sources were apportioned for PTEs in geopahgic soils through positive matrix factorization (PMF), including natural (33.8 %; i.e

A natural barrier: tick-repellent potential of a spruce-derived volatile blend against Hyalomma excavatum and Ixodes ricinus.

Ixodes ricinus and Hyalomma excavatum are two widely dispersed vectors of pathogens, including those that cause Lyme disease and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in the human population. Recently developed, plant-derived, mosquito-repellent blends have shown promise against other vector clades, and this study assesses these blends as potential tick repellents. Blends of (+)-borneol, bornyl acetate, eugenol, isoeugenol and camphor were assessed in two formats: blends 3 and 4. Ticks were assessed using the moving object bioassay (Ixodes) or a dual-choice behavioural assay (Hyalomma). Both blends

Spatial and Temporal Drug Usage Patterns in Wastewater Correlate with Socioeconomic and Demographic Indicators in Southern Nevada.

Evaluating drug use within populations in the United States poses significant challenges due to various social, ethical, and legal constraints, often impeding the collection of accurate and timely data. Here, we aimed to overcome these barriers by conducting a comprehensive analysis of drug consumption trends and measuring their association with socioeconomic and demographic factors. From May 2022 to April 2023, we analyzed 208 wastewater samples from eight sampling locations across six wastewater treatment plants in Southern Nevada, covering a population of 2.4 million residents with 50 milli
