OBJECTIVE: Hit-and-run behavior in crashes is a severe offense worldwide because the identification and emergency rescue of any injured road user is delayed. A motorist's run from the crash scene is especially serious for a cyclist who would be more prone to be physically injured in a bicycle-vehicle (BV) crash. The objective of this paper is to explore potential risk factors that contribute to the hit-and-run (HR) behavior of a driver after a two-unit BV collision.
METHODS: The data used in this study are extracted from traffic crash records in the city of Durham, North Carolina in 2007-2014

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol- and drug-related car crashes are a leading cause of death for adolescents in the United States. This analysis tested the effects of a computer-facilitated Screening and Brief Advice (cSBA) system for primary care on adolescents' reports of driving after drinking or drug use (driving) and riding with substance-using drivers (riding).
METHOD: Twelve- to 18-year-old patients (N = 2,096) at nine New England pediatric offices completed assessments only during the initial 18-month treatment-as-usual (TAU) phase. Subsequently, the 18-month cSBA intervention phase began with a 1-h

INTRODUCTION: Numerous public health and transportation studies have established a strong link between low-socioeconomic status and impaired driving. However, few analyze how a neighborhood's socioeconomic environment influences individual driving behavior.
METHOD: To address this gap, we conducted a spatial econometric analysis at the neighborhood level, assessing the impact of socioeconomic conditions on alcohol and psychoactive drug-related crashes within zip code areas that are neighbored to each other. We merged hospital and crash data to create a dataset of drivers involved in substance

WHO has set minimum, evidence-based criteria to evaluate the quality of behavioural risk factors laws and reports country progress in global status reports on road safety (GSRRS). We describe criteria evolution and country progress. We analyse laws on speed, drink driving, helmets, seatbelts and child restraint. Global status reports 2009 and 2013 are based on countries' responses. In Report 2015, the collection of legislation and assessment by WHO based on criteria began. Criteria were refined based on the evolving scientific evidence and practice. Report 2018 is the first year in which crite

Traffic collisions have continuously been ranked amongst the top causes of deaths in Vietnam. In particular, drinking has been recognized as a major factor amplifying the likelihood of traffic collisions in various settings. This study aims to examine the relationship between alcohol use and traffic collisions in the current context of Vietnam. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 413 traffic collisions patients in six health facilities in the Thai Binh Province to investigate the level of alcohol consumption and identify factors influencing alcohol use among these patients. The Alcohol Us

OBJECTIVE: Little research has examined psychosocial influences differentially associated with driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana (DUIA/DUIM) or of being a passenger in a vehicle driven by someone under the influence of alcohol or marijuana (PVA/PVM).
METHOD: Using 2019 survey data among 2,375 young adults (M age = 24.66, 57.7% female, 51.2% in states with legal marijuana retail) in a longitudinal study examining vaping retail, we conducted latent class analysis (LCA) to identify classes of DUI-related behaviors and multinomial logistic regression to identify correlates of c

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Alcohol-related harms to others (AHTO) are consequences of alcohol use borne by persons other than the drinker. This study assessed whether the odds of experiencing AHTO are associated with alcohol availability and taxation policies.
DESIGN AND METHODS: This study pooled data from four waves of the National Alcohol Survey (n = 20656 adults). We measured past-year AHTO exposure using three binary variables: physical (pushed/hit/assaulted or property damage by someone who had been drinking), family or financial (family/marital problems or financial harms by someone who ha

Objectives: For a jurisdiction to apply appropriate countermeasures for impaired driving, it is necessary to track drug and alcohol involvement in road crashes. In South Australia, it is mandated that all injured road users aged over 10 who attend a hospital for treatment must have a blood sample taken, which is tested for alcohol and drugs. The drug testing covers the three drugs included in South Australia's roadside drug testing program: delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC or cannabis), methamphetamine ('ice') and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA or 'ecstasy').Methods: The present stud

Simultaneously collected samples of oral fluid and blood in a naturalistic setting could provide a qualitative impression of the relative detection times of drugs in oral fluid compared to blood. The aim of this study was to compare detections of different drugs in oral fluid and blood from a large material of paired samples. The study included results from 930 paired oral fluid and blood samples collected from drivers suspected for driving under the influence of drugs. Oral fluid was collected using the Intercept device. Blood samples were screened using an ultra high-performance liquid chrom

OBJECTIVE: Although driving under the influence (DUI) arrests occur at higher rates in rural areas and previous studies have shown more extensive drug use histories, little is known about how this relates to the prevalence and frequency of drugged driving. The present study examined drug use and drugged driving patterns among a sample of rural DUI offenders.
METHODS: Convicted rural DUI offenders (N = 118) completed a one-time, confidential research interview focused on drug use and drugged driving. A descriptive analysis was performed to examine the lifetime and past-year prevalence and freq

RATIONALE: Alcohol intoxication produces effects that can impair judgment and increase engagement in risky behaviors, including alcohol-impaired driving (AID). Real-world AID decisions are informed by contextual circumstances and judgments of associated risk. How individuals vary in their AID decision-making across contexts and whether subjective alcohol responses (stimulation, sedation, acute tolerance) differentially affect AID decisions are critical, but under-studied research questions.
OBJECTIVES: We systematically investigated predictors of AID decisions at different hypothetical drivin

Whole blood samples were examined for ∆9 -Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) over 2 years in drivers suspected of driving under the influence. Part one of the study examined the link between [THC] and performance on field sobriety tests. This portion examined objective signs, eye examinations and physiological indicators; and their relationship to the presence of THC. Several objective signs were excellent indicators of the presence of THC: red eyes (94%), droopy eyelids (85.6%), affected speech (87.6%), tongue coating (96.2%), and odor of marijuana (82.4%). About 63.6% of THC positive subjects had di

BACKGROUND: High rates of driving while intoxicated persist, and recidivism is common. Recently, we demonstrated that 8 weeks of transdermal alcohol concentration (TAC)-based contingency management (CM) reduced heavy drinking (≥5 [men] or ≥4 [women] standard drinks) in 145 DWI arrestees under pretrial supervision. Here, we report 1-month (postintervention) follow-up outcomes for a subgroup of participants who were not Mandated to wear transdermal alcohol monitors.
METHODS: After the intervention, Non-Mandated participants (n = 100, 69%) returned for a 1-month follow-up visit and self-reported

Drug-impaired driving is an increasing public safety concern across Canada, particularly due to the demonstrated increase in use of recreational drugs such as cocaine. Cocaine is a central nervous system stimulant drug; however, it can impair an individual's driving ability in both the stimulant and crash phases. Despite the scientific consensus regarding cocaine's potential for driving impairment, there is relatively little information available regarding blood concentrations and associated observations of impairment in suspected impaired drivers. Retrospective data analysis was performed to

In 2013, the National Safety Council's Alcohol Drugs and Impairment Division added zolpidem and carisoprodol and its metabolite meprobamate to the list of Tier 1 drugs that should be tested for in all suspected drug impaired driving and motor vehicle fatality investigations. We describe the validation of an enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) for both drugs in whole blood, and the utilization of the ELISA to assess their positivity in a sample of 322 suspected impaired driving cases that was retrospectively screened using the validated assays. The occurrence of carisoprodol/meprobamate

INTRODUCTION: In the United States, the number of passenger vehicle drivers killed in crashes with blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) at or above 0.08% increased from 4,791 in 2019 to 5,540 in 2020 and remained elevated at 6,042 in 2022. This paper examines changes in alcohol policies, mental health factors, and law enforcement employment during 2018-2022 and their associations with alcohol-impaired driver deaths.
METHOD: Panel regressions compared high-BAC (≥0.08%) driver deaths across states and months for all ages and ages 16-20. Predictors included state-level alcohol policy indicators (

The risk level of alcohol-involved traffic crashes is closely related to alcohol consumption. However, research on different influencing factors for DUI (Driving Under Influence) and DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) remains limited. This study analyzed data from 3,365 alcohol-related traffic crashes in Tianjin, China. The crashes were categorized into DUI and DWI based on drivers' Blood Alcohol Concentration. Four machine learning models were enhanced and compared. The accuracy, precision, recall and F1-score were used to evaluate the performance of the models. Shapley additive explanations wer
