BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: An aging society requires easy-to-use approaches for diagnosis and monitoring of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's disease (PD), so that clinicians can effectively adjust a treatment policy and improve patients' quality of life. Current methods of PD diagnosis and monitoring usually require the patients to come to a hospital, where they undergo several neurological and neuropsychological examinations. These examinations are usually time-consuming, expensive, and performed just a few times per year. Hence, this study explores the possibility of fusing co

INTRODUCTION: This study examined the utility of multiple second formant (F2) slope metrics to capture differences in speech production for individuals with dysarthria and healthy controls as a function of speaking rate. In addition, the utility of F2 slope metrics for predicting severity of intelligibility impairment in dysarthria was examined.
METHODS: Twenty three speakers with Parkinson's disease and mild to moderate hypokinetic dysarthria (HD), 9 speakers with various neurological diseases and mild to severe ataxic or ataxic-spastic dysarthria (AD), and 26 age-matched healthy control spe

Pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (or previously known as Hallervorden-Spatz syndrome) is a very rare disorder that typically manifests in a child with neurological signs such as gait difficulties, dysarthria, and hyperreflexia, associated potentially with psychiatric symptoms such as cognitive decline. It demonstrates on MRI the typical 'eye of the tiger' appearance, which is due to gliosis and accumulation of iron in the globi pallidi. Other differentials can mimic this appearance on MRI, it is therefore important to search for the involvement of other basal ganglia nuclei and

PURPOSE: While there has been mounting research centered on the diagnosis of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), little has focused on differentiating CAS from pediatric dysarthria. Because CAS and dysarthria share overlapping speech symptoms and some children have both motor speech disorders, differential diagnosis can be challenging. There is a need for clinical tools that facilitate assessment of both CAS and dysarthria symptoms in children. The goals of this tutorial are to (a) determine confidence levels of clinicians in differentially diagnosing dysarthria and CAS and (b) provide a system

BACKGROUND: Chronic lymphocytic inflammation with pontine perivascular enhancement responsive to steroids (CLIPPERS) syndrome is an immune-mediated, treatable and inflammatory CNS disease first reported by Pittock et al. (2010).
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 66-year-old man with previous history of diabetes, atrial fibrillation and hypertension, who was admitted to hospital with reduced general condition. He had experienced dizziness and unstable gait for a year, and had been periodically confused, especially in the previous month. MR imaging showed characteristic punctuate and curvilinear

BACKGROUND: Dysarthria in neurological disorders can have psychosocial consequences. The dysarthric speaker's perspective towards the disorder's psychosocial impact is essential in its global assessment and management. For such purposes, assessment tools such as the Dysarthria Impact Profile (DIP) are indispensable.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to confirm the relevance of using the DIP to quantify the psychosocial consequences of dysarthria in neurological diseases.
METHODS: We studied 120 participants, 15 healthy controls and 105 patients with different kinds of dysarthria induced by several neurolo

Although understanding patient perspectives on treatment is a major component of patient-centered care, little is known about patient perspectives related to dysarthria treatment in Parkinson’s disease (PD). This article attempts to explore the perspective of patients with dysarthria associated with PD by interviewing them before and after treatment. Treatment expectations and experiences are summarized along with a discussion of how patients are using the tools they learned once treatment was completed. Comments about treatment were generally positive and suggested increased awareness and imp

Relatively little is known about the neurobiological basis of speech disorders although genetic determinants are increasingly recognized. The first gene for primary speech disorder was FOXP2, identified in a large, informative family with verbal and oral dyspraxia. Subsequently, many de novo and familial cases with a severe speech disorder associated with FOXP2 mutations have been reported. These mutations include sequencing alterations, translocations, uniparental disomy, and genomic copy number variants. We studied eight probands with speech disorder and their families. Family members were p

Serum antibodies to the ganglioside GQ1b are associated with immune-mediated ophthalmoplegia and ataxia in patients with Miller-Fisher syndrome (MFS) and Guillain-Barré syndrome. A patient with two clinically similar episodes of progressive bulbar signs, ophthalmoplegia and ataxia is reported here. During both episodes the patient required artificial ventilation. Serum anti-GQ1b antibodies were detected during the first episode compatible with MFS, but were absent during the second. Neuroradiological investigations during the second episode showed brain stem ischaemia and obstruction of the le

BACKGROUND: Dysarthria is a common sequel of non-progressive brain damage (typically stroke and traumatic brain damage). Impairment-based therapy and a wide variety of compensatory management strategies are undertaken by speech and language therapists with this patient population.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy of speech and language therapy interventions for adults with dysarthria following non-progressive brain damage.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the trials registers of the following Cochrane Groups: Stroke, Injuries, Movement Disorders and Infectious Diseases. We also searched the

The vocal symptoms of spastic dysarthria and spasmodic dysphonia have many similar features. Botulinum toxin has been used effectively to treat spasmodic dysphonia. This study was designed to determine what vocal changes occur in an individual with spastic dysarthria following Botulinum toxin A injection into the thyroarytenoid muscles. Measures were obtained preinjection and three times postinjection. Acoustic and aerodynamic results were comparable to those reported for individuals with spasmodic dysphonia. The most marked change was increased DC airflow. Despite persistent breathiness, the

We report the results of a single-subject multiple baseline across behaviours experiment of a 74-year-old woman presenting with Parkinson's disease. Her speech was typical of a hypokinetic dysarthria. The main features of her dysarthric speech were: a restriction in the modulation of fundamental frequency, an inappropriate pitch level and a rate disturbance. Three measures of prosody were operationally defined as follows: (1) linguistic modulation of fundamental frequency, (2) mean fundamental frequency and (3) rate. Treatment focused on ameliorating these aspects employing a multiple baseline

An 81-year-old woman with a 13-year history of hypoparathyroidism developed dysarthria and dysphagia. Cranial computed tomography demonstrated extensive calcification involving the basal ganglia, corona radiata, and deep cerebellar structures. The cerebral small-vessel calcification that occurs in chronic hypoparathyroidism may produce the syndrome of progressive dysarthria and dysphagia.

Dysarthria, a common symptom of motor neuron disease (MND), is primarily assessed through perceptual evaluations that are subjective, time-consuming, and require expert training. Acoustic analysis provides an objective alternative, leveraging either "global" features extracted from the entire speech signal or "segmental" features derived from individual phonemes (e.g., vowels). While segmental features offer finer-grained acoustic insights, their extraction has traditionally required manual segmentation, making the process time-consuming. This study explored the use of the Montreal Forced Alig

BACKGROUND: Dysarthria is a common and persisting sequela to stroke. It can have a negative influence on psychological wellbeing, and quality of life. This systematic review aimed to describe and identify the neuroanatomical regions associated with non-progressive dysarthria following stroke.
METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Ovid Medline, CINAHL, Cochrane, Scopus, and ScienceDirect was conducted to identify all relevant articles published in peer-reviewed journals up to December 2021. Following data extraction, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) quality assessment tools were used
