The Value of the Pediatric Urgent Care in Pediatric Resident Education.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric urgent care (UC) is a growing field and may provide unique learning opportunities for pediatric residents. We aimed to assess whether a UC rotation could be feasible and meaningful and help fill educational gaps. METHODS: Within our current X + Y rotational model, we used Kern's 6-step approach for curriculum development to create a longitudinal UC educational experience for postgraduate year 2 (PGY2) pediatric residents. We assessed progress toward achieving our aim by using a mixed-methods approach matched to Kirkpatrick's levels of learning, including program annual ev

The graduate record examination: help or hindrance in nursing graduate school admissions?

Do graduate record examination (GRE) scores serve as strong predictors of student success in graduate school in nursing, and if so, is the extent to which they may indicate success outweighed by their perceived role as a barrier to application to graduate school in nursing? Academic ability, defined as cumulative grade point average (GPA), was used as the outcome indicator for success in graduate school and was compared with admission GRE scores for 217 students admitted to graduate programs at the University of Washington School of Nursing over a 1-year period. The GRE presented a large barri

Update on Didactic and Clinical Education in Fluency Disorders: 2013-2014.

PURPOSE: This study surveyed didactic and clinical education in fluency disorders at undergraduate and graduate institutions in the United States that provide education in speech-language pathology to determine whether a previously observed reduction in requirements has continued since prior surveys (Yaruss, 1999; Yaruss & Quesal, 2002). METHOD: The study involved a detailed questionnaire that was sent to 282 communication science and disorders departments. Questions examined didactic and clinical education, as well as faculty knowledge about fluency disorders. RESULTS: Comparisons with prio

Family Medicine Resident Education About Health Disparities Associated With Incarceration: A CERA Research Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We submitted research questions to the Council of Academic Family Medicine Educational Research Alliance (CERA) to assess the format of family medicine resident education about health disparities associated with incarceration and the perceived efficacy of efforts to prepare graduates for competent care of formerly incarcerated patients in practice. We think this is a universal problem, and current efforts are insufficient. METHODS: We evaluated data as part of the fall 2022 CERA survey of program directors (PDs). We reviewed descriptive statistics, generated compara

Variation in employment inequality between workers with vocational and general education over the career.

Vocational education is often credited with easing school-to-work transitions but may come with late-career disadvantages due to faster skill obsolescence. Previous findings on this "career trade-off" remain inconsistent restricting policy guidance. This study argues that inconsistencies are primarily rooted in (1) variation in the categorization of educational tracks and (2) differences in institutional context across countries. Two theoretical claims are tested: first, that career disparities between vocational and general education are larger at the secondary than at the tertiary level; sec

Family practice residency behavioral science training: influence on graduate practice activity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The educational efficacy of family practice residency behavioral science training and how various educational approaches might influence graduate practice activity are poorly understood. In this study, we compare a traditional didactic and clinical block rotation approach to a problem-based learning (PBL) and clinical, experiential behavioral science curriculum. METHODS: Surveys of pre- and post-intervention cohorts were used to assess graduates' perceptions of their understanding of broad behavioral science concepts, their competence to manage specific behavioral c

Implementing trauma-informed educational practices in an online family nurse practitioner course: Lessons learned from a pilot study.

Family Nurse Practitioner students often navigate graduate education while managing personal, professional, and emotional stressors. Many enter programs with histories of trauma, which may impair learning and performance in rigid, high-stakes academic environments. This pilot study explored the feasibility and perceived impact of implementing trauma-informed educational practices (TIEP) in an asynchronous Family Nurse Practitioner course using the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's six principles to trauma-informed care as a framework. A mixed methods design was used w

Transforming Medical Education: Is Competency-Based Medical Education the Right Approach?

There is growing recognition within the medical education community that medical education in this country needs to be changed to better prepare doctors for the challenges they will face in providing their patients high-quality medical care. A competency-based medical education (CBME) approach was endorsed by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American Board of Medical Specialties approximately 15 years ago, and a self-designated group-the International Competency-Based Medical Education (ICBME) Collaborators-is now calling on members of the medical education comm

Finding Greater Value in the Fourth Year of Medical School: Accelerating the Transition to Residency.

The recent focus on competency-based medical education has heralded a true change in U.S. medical education. Accelerating the transition from medical school to residency may reduce student debt, encourage competency-based educational advancement, and produce residency graduates better prepared for the independent and unsupervised practice of medicine. With some purposeful design considerations, innovative time-variable programs or fixed-time accelerated tracks can be implemented within current regulatory parameters and without major alteration of existing institutional regulatory guidelines, s

Academic standards, credit transfers and associated issues.

Various policies govern the way academic standards are managed and maintained. This includes organisational and program accreditation. Who decides what makes a program acceptable from a discipline and educational perspective? Should IMIA be developing accreditation guidelines for external program accreditation? Also the extent to which individual students are able to gain recognition for study undertaken elsewhere and thus reduce the length of the degree program undertaken varies by higher education provider. For example CQU provides credits based on study undertaken at the same level and wher

Resident training and education in the United States.

Critical institutional and organization issues affect the education of pediatricians, influence their knowledge about child health disparities, and shape their attitudes and approaches to community pediatrics. Understanding the US graduate and postgraduate medical education system is necessary if critical and sustainable changes are to be made to ensure the capacity of pediatricians to respond to critical contemporary determinants of child health.

Childhood and adolescent onset psychiatric disorders, substance use, and failure to graduate high school on time.

We examined the joint predictive effects of childhood and adolescent onset psychiatric and substance use disorders on failure to graduate high school (HS) on time. Structured diagnostic interviews were conducted with a US national sample of adults (18 and over). The analysis sample included respondents with at least 8 years of education who were born in the US or arrived in the US prior to age 13 (N = 29,662). Psychiatric disorders, substance use and substance use disorders were examined as predictors of termination or interruption of educational progress prior to HS graduation, with statistic

Neurology residents' education in functional seizures.

We report a survey of neurology residency program directors (PDs) and recent neurology residency graduates about the education provided during residency on functional seizures (FS), a subtype of functional neurological disorder (FND). The purpose of our study was to assess the education gap for neurology residents about FS since patients with FS are frequently seen by neurologists, who typically conduct the evaluation and share the findings with the patient. A survey was sent to 93 Neurology residency program directors and 71 recent graduates. We obtained a low response rate of 17%. Results of

Modeling and measuring graduate students' generative AI literacy: a study based on Marzano's taxonomy.

BACKGROUND: Generative AI is rapidly reshaping graduate students' academic research practices. Existing research lacks both literacy models specific to graduate students and a unifying theoretical framework to explain each dimension's functional role and interrelationships, constraining its cultivation and evaluation. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with 14 professors were analyzed using grounded theory, with Marzano's taxonomy of educational objectives serving as the theoretical framework for selective coding. A corresponding scale was developed and empirically validated with 308 graduat
