In silico mechanical evaluation of a liquid crystal elastomer-based biomimetic implant for the first metatarsophalangeal joint.

Hallux rigidus is a degenerative condition of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) characterized by progressive cartilage loss, pain, and restricted motion. Conventional surgical treatments such as arthrodesis eliminate joint mobility, while existing metallic, ceramic, and polymeric implants often fail to replicate the compliant, viscoelastic response of native cartilage. This mechanical mismatch increases interfacial stress and accelerates degeneration of the opposing cartilage. Synthetic cartilage implants aim to preserve motion, but their long-term performance remains inconsistent, wi

High-precision 3D printing of multi-branch vascular scaffold with plasticized PLCL thermoplastic elastomer.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has emerged as a transformative technology for tissue engineering, enabling the production of structures that closely emulate the intricate architecture and mechanical properties of native biological tissues. However, the fabrication of complex microstructures with high accuracy using biocompatible, degradable thermoplastic elastomers poses significant technical obstacles. This is primarily due to the inherent soft-matter nature of such materials, which complicates real-time control of micro-squeezing, resulting in low fidelity or even failure. In this study, we

Liquid crystalline elastomer self-oscillating fiber actuators fabricated from soft tubular molds.

The self-oscillation of objects that perform continuous and periodic motions upon unchanging and constant stimuli is highly important for intelligent actuators, advanced robotics, and biomedical machines. Liquid crystalline elastomer (LCE) materials are superior to traditional stimuli-responsive polymeric materials in the development of self-oscillators because of their reversible, large and anisotropic shape-changing ability, fast response ability and versatile structural design. In addition, fiber-shaped oscillators have attracted much interest due to their agility, flexibility and diverse o

A cold-responsive liquid crystal elastomer provides visual signals for monitoring a critical temperature decrease.

Critical temperature indicators have been extensively utilized in various fields, ranging from healthcare to food safety. However, the majority of the temperature indicators are designed for upper critical temperature monitoring, indicating when the temperature rises and exceeds a predefined limit, whereas stringently demanded low critical temperature indicators are scarcely developed. Herein, we develop a new material and system that monitor temperature decrease, e.g., from ambient temperature to the freezing point, or even to an ultra-low temperature of -20 °C. For this purpose, we create a

Aligned Conjugated Polymer Nanofiber Networks in an Elastomer Matrix for High-Performance Printed Stretchable Electronics.

Conjugated polymer films are promising in wearable X-ray detection. However, achieving optimal film microstructure possessing good electrical and detection performance under large deformation via scalable printing remains challenging. Herein, we report bar-coated high-performance stretchable films based on a conjugated polymer P(TDPP-Se) and elastomer SEBS blend by optimizing the solution-processing conditions. The moderate preaggregation in solution and prolonged growth dynamics from a solvent mixture with limited dissolving capacity is critical to forming aligned P(TDPP-Se) chains/crystallin

Bioresorbable Bilayered Elastomer/Hydrogel Constructs with Gradual Interfaces for the Fast Actuation of Self-Rolling Tubes.

In the biomedical field, self-rolling materials provide interesting opportunities to develop medical devices suitable for drug or cell encapsulation. However, to date, a major limitation for medical applications is the use of non-biodegradable and non-biocompatible polymers that are often reported for such applications or the slow actuation witnessed with degradable systems. In this work, biodegradable self-rolling tubes that exhibit a spontaneous and rapid actuation when immersed in water are designed. Photo-crosslinkable hydrophilic and hydrophobic poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(lactide) (PEG-PL

Biosourced Poly(lactic acid)/polyamide-11 Blends: Effect of an Elastomer on the Morphology and Mechanical Properties.

Fully biobased polylactide (PLA)/polyamide-11 (PA11) blends were prepared by melt mixing with an elastomer intermediate phase to address the low elasticity and brittleness of PLA blends. The incorporation of a biobased elastomer made of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) copolymers was found to change the rigid interface between PLA and PA11 into a much more elastic/deformable one as well as promote interfacial compatibility. The interfacial tension of the polymer pairs and spreading coefficients revealed a high tendency of PEO to spread at the PLA/PA11

Multifunctional elastomer cardiac patches for preventing left ventricle remodeling after myocardial infarction in vivo.

Myocardial infarction (MI) is still a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Elastomer cardiac patches have shown great potential in preventing left ventricle (LV) remodeling post-MI by providing mechanical support to the infarcted myocardium. Improved therapeutic outcomes are expected by mediating pathological processes in the necrosis phase, inflammation phase, and fibrosis phase, through orchestrated biological and mechanical treatments. In this study, a mechanically robust multifunctional cardiac patch integrating reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging, anti-inflammatory, and

Micropatterned conductive elastomer patch based on poly (glycerol sebacate)-graphene for cardiac tissue repair.

Preparing a micropatterned elastomer film with characteristics that can simulate the mechanical properties, anisotropy, and electroactivity of natural myocardial tissues is crucial in cardiac tissue engineering after myocardial infarction (MI). Therefore, in this study, we developed several elastomeric films with a surface micropattern based on poly (glycerol sebacate) (PGS) and graphene (Gr). These films have sufficient mechanical strength (0.6 ± 0.1-3.2 ± 0.08 MPa) to withstand heartbeats, and the micropatterned structure also satisfies the natural myocardium anisotropy in the transverse and

Thermoplastic Elastomer Tunes Phase Structure and Promotes Stretchability of High-Efficiency Organic Solar Cells.

Top-performance organic solar cells (OSCs) consisting of conjugated polymer donors and nonfullerene small molecule acceptors (NF-SMAs) deliver rapid increases in efficiencies. Nevertheless, many of the polymer donors exhibit high stiffness and small molecule acceptors are very brittle, which limit their applications in wearable devices. Here, a simple and effective strategy is reported to improve the stretchability and reduce the stiffness of high-efficiency polymer:NF-SMA blends and simultaneously maintain the high efficiency by incorporating a low-cost commercial thermoplastic elastomer, pol

Long-term intravenous therapy with use of peripherally inserted silicone-elastomer catheters in orthopaedic patients.

We studied the results of prolonged intravenous therapy with antibiotics through a central venous silicone-elastomer catheter that had been peripherally inserted in thirty-five orthopaedic patients. The catheters remained in place for an average of twenty-nine days (range, five to seventy-four days). The 20-gauge (one-millimeter-diameter) catheters used in our study were smaller in diameter than the triple-lumen catheters or the double-lumen Hickman catheters used in previous studies. The catheters in our study were left indwelling for as long as, or for longer than, those in other studies. Ou

Design of Low-Wear and Self-Recoverable Polyurethane Elastomers via Microphase Separation and Dynamic Bonding for Artificial Meniscus Prostheses.

High-performance materials for artificial meniscus prostheses currently exhibit notable limitations in wear resistance, failing to fully adapt to the complex physiological microenvironment of the human body. Polyurethane elastomers have emerged as highly promising candidate materials in the biomedical field, attributed to their tunable mechanical properties and facile processability. In this study, a low-wear, self-healing polyurethane elastomer (PPU1.0) for artificial meniscus prostheses is developed through the synergistic optimization of microphase separation and dynamic hydrazone bonds. Mechanically robust polyurethane elastomers enabled by soft-segment-regulated hydrogen bonds and microphase separation for ultrasound imaging medical catheters.

Conventional strategies for enhancing the mechanical robustness of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (TPUs) rely on hard-segment engineering, such as introducing dynamic covalent/noncovalent bonds or optimizing chain extenders, yet overlook the critical role of soft segments in governing microphase separation. Here, we present a soft-segment-regulated design that leverages crystallizable polyols to synergize hierarchical hydrogen bonding, tunable microphase separation, and strain-induced crystallization (SIC), achieving excellent mechanical performance. Among them, PU-PTMEG exhibits except

Femtosecond Laser Ablation of Dielectric Elastomer Microactuator Arrays Enables Scalable Smart Surface Manipulation.

Miniaturization of manipulation systems can be advanced using dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs). In this work, we present a laser-assisted fabrication method for DEA electrodes using a femtosecond laser, enabling the formation of both macro- and microscale electrode patterns with high precision. The low ablation threshold of carbon nanotubes, combined with the near-infrared transparency of elastomers, allows for selective removal of the conductive layer with minimal thermal damage to the elastomer. This single-step laser ablation process was employed to fabricate the actuation layers of DE

Supramolecular Elastomer Based Switchable Adhesives Regulated by Soft Confinement Induced Nano-Rod Crystals.

Supramolecular adhesives enable on-demand detachment due to their dynamic nature. However, such behavior usually at the cost of limited adhesive toughness. To promote the intrinsic compromise between adhesive toughness and switchability, we propose a soft-confinement-regulated nanorod crystallization strategy to construct a supramolecular elastomer (PTA-PCL). The amphiphilic and soft poly (thioctic acid) (PTA) matrix forms a dynamically confined interface through hydrogen bonding, directing the oriented self-assembly of hydrophobic polycaprolactone glycol (PCL-OH) into nanorod crystals with an

A Skin-Inspired High-κ Self-Healing Polymer for Low-Voltage Dielectric Elastomer Actuators.

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), known as a type of artificial muscles, are promising soft actuators with many applications including robotics and wearables due to their conformability, fast response, and large actuation. However, their usage remains constrained by high driving voltages needed to achieve substantial actuation. Here, we design a skin-inspired high-κ self-healing elastomer, poly-(acrylonitrile-co-butadiene)-co-thiourea (PABTU), that features a high dielectric constant (15 at 1 kHz), low Young's modulus (0.58 and 0.012 MPa upon pre-stretch), and ability to form pinhole-free

Deep Learning-Assisted Intelligent Liquid Crystal Elastomer Grippers Based on Autonomous Triboelectric Sensing.

Soft grippers have shown promising applications in robotics due to their high flexibility, damage-free contact, and environmental adaptability. However, their sensing often relies on external sensors and thus suffers from susceptibility to environmental interference. Here, we report a liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) gripper integrated with dual-mode triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) for self-powered target identification. By synergizing fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) TENG sensors, the system generates voltage signals (V1, V2) encoding intrinsic material

Immunocompatible Elastomer With Enhanced Fibrous Capsule-Resistance and Elasticity by Water-Induced Surface Phase Reconfiguration.

Integrating surface and bulk heterogeneity enables synergistic optimization of implantable biomaterials, harmonizing surface-tissue interactions with the mechanical integrity of the bulk. However, achieving this heterogeneity within a single material remains a significant challenge. Here, a strategy to engineer spontaneously generated heterogeneous surface and bulk structures within a material is introduced. The resulting material is termed phase-separation and underwater reconfiguration-enhanced (PURE) elastomers. PURE elastomers integrate the high elasticity of the bulk with superior immunoc
