Feasibility study of an automated Strabismus screening Test using Augmented Reality and Eye-tracking (STARE).

BACKGROUND: New digital technologies (augmented reality headsets, eye-tracking) may potentially allow for automated assessments of ocular misalignment. Here, we evaluate the feasibility of a novel, open-source strabismus test ("STARE") as an automated screening tool. METHODS: Work progressed in 2 phases. In phase 1 ("development"), we used Fresnel prisms to elicit horizontal misalignments of known magnitude (1-40 prism dioptres) in orthotropic controls. In phase 2 ("validation"), we applied the system to adults with an established diagnosis of strabismus, and quantified the ability of the tes

Subclinical involvement of eye movements detected by video-based eye tracking in myasthenia gravis.

BACKGRO UND: Ocular abnormalities in myasthenia gravis (MG) are characterized by severely limited movements and rapid saccades. Data about eye motility of MG patients whose ocular movements are apparently normal are lacking. Our study assessed the eye movement parameters in MG patients without clinical eye motility dysfunctions and investigated the effects of neostigmine administration on the eye motility in these patients. MATERIALS: In this longitudinal study, we screened all patients diagnosed with MG referring to the Neurologic Clinic of the University of Catania between October 1, 2019,

An eye tracking examination of fantasy television's immediate influence on children's executive functions.

Several studies have investigated the immediate impact of viewing fantastical television (TV) programs on children's cognitive function; however, the results have been inconsistent. This study experimentally investigates the immediate impact of TV content (high fantasy vs. low fantasy) on the executive functions (EFs), specifically visual attention and inhibitory control, of 65 children aged 5-7. Children were randomly assigned to view either high fantasy (HF) or low fantasy (LF) programs, and their EFs were assessed with eye-tracking pro/anti-saccade tasks before and after viewing the program

Advantages of combining multiple eye-tracking paradigms for distinguishing young autistic from non-autistic children.

BACKGROUND: Single-paradigm, single-measure eye-tracking protocols have demonstrated utility in distinguishing between autistic and non-autistic children although effect sizes and reproducibility vary. There is a need for brief, scalable digital behavioral biomarkers that integrate complementary information from multiple eye-tracking paradigms and achieve improved accuracy in combination. METHODS: 74 autistic and 63 non-autistic children aged 24-72 months performed five different eye-tracking paradigms (facial emotion processing, gaze-following, dynamic social versus geometric patterns, socia

Comparing automated gaze classifiers in infant looking studies: Accuracy and vulnerability to environmental factors.

We evaluated the performance and environmental robustness of three state-of-the-art gaze classification algorithms designed for infant looking-time research: iCatcher+, OWLET, and an Amazon Rekognition-based model. Gaze classifications for each algorithm were compared to human-coded data using a novel dataset (N = 47), and iCatcher+ demonstrated the highest agreement (78.4-85.4%). We then investigated the effect of environmental factors commonly encountered in webcam-based home experiments with infants. We quantified six factors: distance to the camera; infants' left-right offset; facial rotat

The Effect of Experience on Visual Search Patterns in Retinal Imaging Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The increasing use of retinal diagnostic imaging necessitates a standardized viewing technique. This study investigates visual search patterns among ophthalmologists at various experience levels using eye-tracking technology. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Participants included postgraduate year 2, 3, and 4 residents, retina fellows, and attending ophthalmologists, who analyzed fundus images while their eye movements were tracked. RESULTS: Results indicated that attendings had shorter fixation durations (0.15 ± 0.04 seconds) and saccade lengths (0.06° ± 0.01°), indicating fa

The best fixation target revisited: New insights from retinal eye tracking.

In many tasks, participants are instructed to fixate a target. While maintaining fixation, the eyes nonetheless make small fixational eye movements, such as microsaccades and drift. Previous work has examined the effect of fixation point design on fixation stability and the amount and spatial extent of fixational eye movements. However, much of this work used video-based eye trackers, which have insufficient resolution and suffer from artefacts that make them unsuitable for this topic of study. Here, we therefore use a retinal eye tracker, which offers superior resolution and does not suffer f

Writing direction influences the spatial representations of past- and future-tense forms: Evidence from eye tracking.

The present study tests the hypothesis that the directionality of reading habits (left-to-right or right-to-left) impacts individuals' representation of nonspatial events. Using the blank screen paradigm, we examine whether eye movements reflect culture-specific spatial biases in processing temporal information, specifically, grammatical tense in Russian and Hebrew. Sixty-two native speakers of Russian (a language with a left-to-right reading and writing system) and 62 native speakers of Hebrew (a language with a right-to-left reading and writing system) listened to verbs in the past or future

Active Viewing Facilitates Gaze to the Eye Region in Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Previous studies have shown reduced attention to the eyes in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, most eye-tracking evidence regarding this impairment has been derived from passive viewing tasks. Here, we compared the passive viewing of faces with an active task involving face identification with morphing faces. While typical controls prioritized the eyes over other facial features regardless of viewing condition, autistic children exhibited reduced eye-looking in passive viewing, but displayed increased attention allocation to the eyes when instructed to identify faces. Portable eye-tracking as a reliable assessment of oculomotor, cognitive and reaction time function: Normative data for 18-45 year old.

Eye movements measured by high precision eye-tracking technology represent a sensitive, objective, and non-invasive method to probe functional neural pathways. Oculomotor tests (e.g., saccades and smooth pursuit), tests that involve cognitive processing (e.g., antisaccade and predictive saccade), and reaction time tests have increasingly been showing utility in the diagnosis and monitoring of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in research settings. Currently, the adoption of these tests into clinical practice is hampered by a lack of a normative data set. The goal of this study was to construc

Attentional bias in tobacco use disorder using eye tracking: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Attentional bias, defined as the disproportionate attentional allocation towards drug-related stimuli, is well-demonstrated in substance use disorders. However, studies investigating attentional bias in tobacco use disorder have revealed inconclusive findings. In recent years, eye-tracking technology has emerged as an innovative technique for exploring attentional bias. This systematic review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of eye-tracking studies examining attentional bias in tobacco use disorder. METHODS: Using PRISMA guidelines, 18 papers that assessed attentional bias

Effects of anchor characteristics and product attributes on consumer purchase decisions in live streaming sales: evidence from an eye-tracking study.

As live streaming sales have become a significant model in e-commerce, a critical scientific question arises: how should the characteristics of anchor combinations be matched with product attributes to enhance consumers' purchase intention? Based on a 5 × 2 × 2 experimental design, this study investigates the interactive effects of anchor combination mode (single male, single female, male pair, female pair, mixed-gender pair), product type (search-based vs. experience-based), and the gender orientation of the target audience (male-oriented vs. female-oriented) on consumers' purchase intention.

The use of lexico-semantics and gender marking as cues to prediction in L1 and L2 German.

In three visual-world eye-tracking studies, we investigated the individual and combinatory use of lexico-semantic information of the verb and gender marking of the determiner to predict the referent of an upcoming object among L1 and L2 German speakers. Importantly, in our design random, the linguistic input randomly varied in terms of the type of information (lexico-semantic, morphosyntactic, or a combination thereof) that could be used as predictive cue, most closely reflecting real-world language input compared to most previous studies. Cluster-based permutation analyses revealed prediction

Eye Tracking-Based Evaluation of Auditory Spatial Attention in a Virtual Auditory Environment: Protocol for Development of a New Approach and Preliminary Validation.

BACKGROUND: Auditory spatial attention (ASA) can be impaired in clinical populations and affects everyday activities, yet it remains understudied and lacks practical assessment tools for clinical use. However, recent technological advances have enabled the development of auditory virtual environments capable of engaging attentional networks while remaining compatible with clinical implementation and supporting the collection of objective physiological measures. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to address the lack of clinically applicable ASA assessments by developing a new assessment (phase 1) and

The impact of test announcements on subtitle reliance and video comprehension: The role of vocabulary size and working memory.

This study investigates how test announcements affect subtitle reliance and video comprehension among Chinese learners of English, taking into account vocabulary size and working memory variances. Fifty-four participants were recruited in an eye-tracking experiment where they were divided into two groups: a group with a test announcement (TA) of the upcoming comprehension test and a group without (NTA). Results indicated that TA manifested significantly higher total duration of fixation and number of fixations, suggesting heightened subtitle reliance when participants were aware of the test. T

Economic Scarcity Impedes Impoverished Children's Executive Function: The Role of Multiple Resources Examined Through Eye Tracking.

Poverty is a chronic social issue with profound implications for human development. Although scarcity theory provides a new framework for how poverty depletes mental resources, the specific cognitive pathways through which this process of depletion occurs and subsequently impairs cognition remain unclear. This study explored the integrative effect of attention and self-control resources on executive function through eye tracking among children in poverty. A total of 181 Chinese children (mean age 10.73 years; 48.62% boys) participated, 94 of whom lived in poor families. Children who experience

Accuracy of a 2-minute eye-tracking assessment to differentiate young children with and without autism.

BACKGROUND: Eye-tracking could expedite autism identification/diagnosis through standardisation and objectivity. Do eye trackers estimate eyeball rotation? The relationship between tracked eye image feature and estimated saccadic waveform.

The eyeball is not rigid and deforms during saccades. As a consequence, the saccade waveform recorded by an eye tracker may depend on which structure of the eye is used to estimate eyeball rotation. Here, we systematically describe and compare signals co-recorded from the retina, the cornea (corneal reflection, CR), the pupil, and the lens (fourth Purkinje reflection, P4) during saccades. We found that several commonly used parameters for saccade characterization differ systematically across the signals. For instance, saccades in the retinal signal had earlier onsets compared to saccades in th
