Borderline personality disorder and learning: The influences of emotional state and social versus nonsocial feedback.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) has been associated with decision-making deficits, yet such deficits may be context dependent, particularly emotional state and social context. Reinforcement learning models offer an avenue to pinpoint decision-making impairments. The current study used reinforcement learning models to examine whether feedback type (social vs. nonsocial) or emotional state (neutral vs. negative) influence the association between BPD and decision making. METHOD: Adults (N = 131) with a range of BPD symptoms completed a diagnostic interview and a computerized le

Freedom of choice boosts midfrontal theta power during affective feedback processing of goal-directed actions.

Sense of agency, the feeling of being in control of one's actions and their effects, is particularly relevant during goal-directed actions. During feedback learning, action effects provide information about the best course of action to reinforce positive and prevent negative outcomes. However, it is unclear whether agency experience selectively affects the processing of negative or positive feedback during the performance of goal-directed actions. As an important marker of feedback processing, we examined agency-related changes in midfrontal oscillatory activity in response to performance feed

Practice Parameters That Influence Vocal Motor Adaptation in Altered Auditory Feedback Paradigms.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine how the structure of vocal practice influences vocal motor adaptation. METHOD: Thirty-two speakers completed four altered auditory feedback paradigms in which their fundamental frequency (fo) was systematically shifted down by one semitone in a single session. Paradigms were compared to isolate the influence of two practice parameters-vowel and intertrial interval (ITI) duration-on vocal motor learning, as measured by vocal responses to predictable altered auditory feedback (adaptive responses). Adaptive responses were measured during and af

The Impact of Negative Social Feedback on Wanting and Liking of Food Pictures in Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Negative emotional states have been found to predict food cravings and consumption in the general population. People with a persistent tendency to restrict food intake, however, might be eating less when sad, angry, or stressed. In this study, the impact of inducing a negative emotional state through social exclusion on wanting and liking of food pictures was explored in patients with anorexia nervosa. METHOD: 43 patients with anorexia nervosa and 22 healthy controls completed a computerised social rejection and food appraisal task. Participants viewed short videos in which a stran

Feedback timing-modulated weather prediction reveals relative deficits in both procedural and declarative learning in adults with dyslexia.

A topic of recent debate is the hypothesis that deficits associated with developmental disorders of language, such as reading disability, can be explained by a selective weakness in procedural memory. Adults with (n = 29; RD) and without (n = 29; TD) reading disability completed a weather prediction task under immediate and delayed feedback conditions, that rely on the striatal (procedural) and hippocampal (declarative) circuits, respectively. We examined trial-by-trial accuracy by feedback condition (immediate vs. delayed) and group (RD vs. TD). In the immediate feedback condition, we found t

The role of feedback and differences between good and poor decoders in a repeated word reading paradigm in first grade.

The direct, retention, and transfer effects of repeated word and pseudoword reading were studied in a pretest, training, posttest, retention design. First graders (48 good readers, 47 poor readers) read 25 CVC words and 25 CVC pseudowords in ten repeated word reading sessions, preceded and followed by a transfer task with a different set of items. Two weeks after training, trained items were assessed again in a retention test. Participants either received phonics feedback, in which each word was spelled out and repeated; word feedback, in which each word was repeated; or no feedback. During th

Electrophysiological responses of feedback processing are modulated by MAOA genotype in healthy male adolescents.

A functional polymorphism in the promoter region of the monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) gene is closely related to aggression. Although previous studies suggested that impaired ability of feedback processing might be associated with aggressive behaviour, studies concerning the MAOA gene-related aggression rarely focused on the link between MAOA gene and feedback processing. We therefore sought to investigate the effect of MAOA genotype on electrophysiological responses of feedback processing in 72 healthy male adolescents during a simple monetary gambling task. Feedback processing was investigated

Retraining running gait to reduce tibial loads with clinician or accelerometry guided feedback.

OBJECTIVES: Reducing tibial acceleration through gait retraining is thought to reduce the risk of stress fracture development, however current approaches require the use of advanced accelerometry equipment not readily available in the clinical setting. The aim was to compare the effect of clinician guided feedback with accelerometry guided feedback on peak tibial accelerations during running. DESIGN: Repeated measures randomised design. METHODS: Twenty-two healthy male runners were randomised to receive either tibial accelerometry or clinician guided feedback. Peak tibial accelerations were

The use of messages in altering risky gambling behavior in experienced gamblers.

The present study was an experimental analogue that examined the relationship between gambling-related irrational beliefs and risky gambling behavior. Eighty high-frequency gamblers were randomly assigned to four conditions and played a chance-based computer game in a laboratory setting. Depending on the condition, during the game a pop-up screen repeatedly displayed either accurate or inaccurate messages concerning the game, neutral messages, or no messages. Consistent with a cognitive-behavioral model of gambling, accurate messages that correctly described the random contingencies governing

A quantitative model of the "effective" signal processing in the auditory system. I. Model structure.

This paper describes a quantitative model for signal processing in the auditory system. The model combines a series of preprocessing stages with an optimal detector as the decision device. The present paper gives a description of the various preprocessing stages and of the implementation of the optimal detector. The output of the preprocessing stages is a time-varying activity pattern to which "internal noise" is added. In the decision process, a stored temporal representation of the signal to be detected (template) is compared with the actual activity pattern. The comparison amounts to calcul

Written Languaging with Direct Feedback in Beginner CSL Writing: A Crossover Study of Metacognitive Engagement and Transfer Effects.

Understanding the cognitive architectures that enable learners to process feedback and self-regulate is fundamental to fostering intelligent second language (L2) learning, particularly as AI-based pedagogies become prevalent. Direct written corrective feedback, while common in beginner L2 writing, often triggers only surface-level processing. This study investigates whether written languaging (WL), a metacognitive activity where learners explain language problems in writing, can deepen feedback processing, thereby activating a more robust cognitive architecture for error correction. Using a wi

Resisting aggression in social contexts: The influence of life-course persistent antisocial behavior on behavioral and neural responses to social feedback.

Early adulthood has long been recognized as a potential turning point for the development of antisocial behavior, due to changes in social contexts and ongoing psychological and neurobiological maturation. However, it remains unclear how different developmental trajectories of antisocial behavior, their neural underpinnings, and individual differences in psychopathic traits may help explain the distinct developmental outcomes of individuals who persist in or desist from antisocial behavior in early adulthood - such as how they respond to others in social contexts. Therefore, in the current stu

Do I focus on the process of cycling or try to put my mind elsewhere? A comparison of concentration strategies for use in pacing by novice riders.

The ability to hold a pace is a key skill for endurance athletes. The present study compared the influence of different strategies on how athletes learn to pace at 80% of their maximum performance for a 3-min cycle time trial. Participants first completed three maximal 3-min tests to establish maximal performance. During subsequent visits we asked participants to ride at 80% of their average maximal 3-min power output for four 3-min efforts under different conditions. Participants were blinded to feedback for three of the four conditions with participants (a) riding on feel (all feedback blind

Vulnerability-specific stress generation: Childhood emotional abuse and the mediating role of depressogenic interpersonal processes.

Stress generation in depression (i.e. the tendency for depression-prone individuals to experience more life stress that is in part influenced by the individual) has been well established. However, more research is necessary to clarify the role of specific types of life stress in this effect. The current study extends the stress generation hypothesis by examining whether the type of stress involved is contingent upon the nature of the individual's particular vulnerability. Childhood emotional abuse and interpersonal vulnerability factors were predicted to be associated with prospective interper
