Critical evaluation of the composition and use of topical fluorides, with emphasis on the role of calcium fluoride in caries inhibition.

There is evidence that a major part of the fluoride which is retained on teeth during topical application is calcium fluoride or calcium fluoride-like, and that this material is relatively stable in the mouth. This is due to surface adsorption of phosphate (HPO4(2-)) ions onto the calcium fluoride surface. Calcium fluoride releases fluoride during caries challenges due to reduced concentration of HPO4(2-) at acid pH. Normally, the fluoride released from calcium fluoride during caries challenges is subsequently built into hydroxyfluorapatite through dissolution/re-precipitation reactions. It ap

Effects of two fluoride gels on fluoride uptake and phosphorus loss during artificial caries formation.

Blocks of human enamel were cycled through a demineralization--F-treatment-remineralization procedure and then analyzed for fluoride and the presence of caries-like lesions. Treatments with a sodium fluoride gel (5000 ppm F) increased the enamel fluoride concentration to 6500 ppm F, whereas a stannous fluoride gel (1000 ppm F) increased enamel fluoride to about 1200 ppm F. Although a control treatment (water) allowed caries-like lesions to form, as observed by microradiography, no lesions were found in either of the fluoride-treated groups. When the experiment was repeated with radioactive tee

Comparison of the Microhardness of Primary Dentin With Artificially Induced Caries Following the Application of Sodium Fluoride Varnish With the Intensive Technique Versus Fluoride Therapy With Silver Diamine Fluoride.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Black discoloration is a major challenge encountered when using silver diamine fluoride (SDF) to manage early childhood caries (ECC). This study aimed to assess the carious primary dentin microhardness following the application of sodium fluoride (NaF) varnish with the intensive technique versus fluoride therapy with SDF. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this in vitro study, 45 extracted relatively sound primary molars were randomly assigned to three groups: Group 1: Application of 30% SDF, Group 2: Application of Aria Dent varnish (5% NaF) three times within 10 days, and G

The impact of community water fluoridation cessation on health equity and service utilization: a global scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: Community water fluoridation (CWF) is a widely used population-level intervention for preventing dental caries. However, CWF discontinuation is increasingly debated globally, often without a comprehensive synthesis of the subsequent clinical, service-related, economic, and equity implications. We aimed to systematically map and synthesize empirical evidence regarding dental health and service-based outcomes following CWF cessation. METHODS: For this scoping review, we searched 17 bibliographic databases and grey literature from inception through Oct 31, 2025. Eligible studies repo

Silver diamine fluoride with sodium fluoride varnish versus silver diamine fluoride in arresting early childhood caries: a 6-months follow up of a randomized field trial.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) is the most prevalent chronic health problem in young children, and it can be arrested using professionally applied fluoride such as Sodium fluoride (NaF) varnish and Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF). This trial compared two interventions to arrest ECC lesions: 38% SDF combined with 5% NaF varnish versus 38% SDF and assessed whether the arrest rate was affected by baseline lesion severity measured by ICDAS. METHODS: Children aged ≤ 4 years from 4 nurseries in a rural area in Alexandria, Egypt joined the study in March 2022. They were included if they had

Fluoridation and county-level secondary bone cancer among cancer patients 18 years or older in New York State.

The decision whether to fluoridate drinking water continues to be controversial in some communities. Dental and skeletal fluorosis in response to chronic fluoride overexposure are cited as reasons to avoid community water fluoridation in spite of evidence of the oral and skeletal health benefits fluoridation confers. Community fluoridation of ~ 1 mg/L fluoride has not been found to be associated with primary bone cancer but is associated with improved bone strength. No studies have examined fluoride exposure and secondary bone cancer, a common metastasis with significant morbidity. We hypothes

Effect of silver diamine fluoride versus fluoride varnish in arresting early childhood caries: A clinical study.

The comparative effectiveness of silver diamine fluoride and fluoride varnish in arresting early childhood caries remains insufficiently established. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate caries arrest among 90 children treated with either silver diamine fluoride or fluoride varnish. Hence, participants were divided into two groups, with clinical assessment of caries arrest at baseline and follow-up using standardized criteria. Silver diamine fluoride showed a higher caries arrest rate than fluoride varnish, reflecting its combined antimicrobial and remineralization effects. Thus, we show c

Evaluation of Fluoride Uptake of Two Fluoride Varnishes into and onto the Enamel Surface at Different Temperatures: An In Vitro Study.

BACKGROUND: Fluoride (F) is an effective anticaries agent and can be delivered through various mediums at different concentrations. The ability to increase the enamel resistance to acid by decreasing solubility through the incorporation of F into the enamel apatite structure is the primary function of these agents. The efficacy of topical F can be determined by measuring the amount of F incorporated in and on human enamel. AIM: To compare the F uptake into and onto the enamel surface of two different F varnishes at different temperatures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 96 teeth were d

Amine fluoride/stannous fluoride and chlorhexidine mouthwashes as adjuncts to single-stage dental implants: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: The growing popularity of non-submerged dental implants in recent years requires a greater emphasis on microbial plaque control. Chlorhexidine (CHX), the most commonly used mouthwash in implant surgery, is sometimes associated with tooth staining and alteration in taste perception. Amine fluoride/stannous fluoride (AmF/SnF2) mouthwash has been shown to have anti-infective properties; however, it has not been tested as an adjunct anti-infective means in non-submerged dental implants. The purpose of this trial was to compare AmF/SnF2 and CHX mouthwashes as adjuncts to single-stage de

Characterization of stable beryllium fluoride, aluminum fluoride, and vanadate containing myosin subfragment 1-nucleotide complexes.

Beryllium and aluminum fluorides are good phosphate analogues. These compounds, like orthovanadate, form stable complexes with myosin subfragment 1 (S1) in the presence of MgADP. The formation of the stable S1-nucleotide complexes is characterized by the loss of ATPase activity. For the complete loss of ATPase activity there was necessary a higher concentration of aluminum than of beryllium or vanadate. In the presence of MgATP the onset of the inhibition is delayed, which indicates that stable complexes cannot form when a specific site is occupied by the gamma-phosphate of ATP or by P(i) deri

Otospongiosis and sodium fluoride. A clinical double-blind, placebo-controlled study on sodium fluoride treatment in otospongiosis.

The effect of sodium fluoride treatment in patients with otospongiosis has been evaluated in a prospective clinical double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 95 patients. The results showed a statistically significant greater deterioration of hearing loss in the placebo group than in the group actively treated with 40 mg of sodium fluoride daily. These results support the view that sodium fluoride can change otospongiotic, active lesions to more dense, inactive otosclerotic lesions.

The prevalence of fluorosis-like lesions associated with topical and systemic fluoride usage in an area of optimal water fluoridation.

The frequency of using self-applied (over-the-counter) fluoride products and prescribed supplemental fluorides, and the prevalence of fluorosis-like enamel lesions in the permanent dentitions of children living in an optimally fluoridated urban community were investigated. Subjects were selected randomly, and consent forms and questionnaires concerning fluoride usage and residency status were provided to guardians prior to examination. After a supervised tooth brushing event, 300 consenting subjects were examined by the principal investigator using Dean's index to assess levels of fluorosis-li

Otospongiosis and sodium fluoride. A blind experimental and clinical evaluation of the effect of sodium fluoride treatment in patients with otospongiosis.

The effect of sodium fluoride treatment in patients with otospongiosis has been evaluated blindly in a morphological and microchemical element analysis of otospongiotic specimens together with a prospective clinical double-blind, placebo-controlled study. The results show that using the calcium/phosphorus ratio as an indication for bone maturity, the sodium fluoride treatment can stabilize otospongiotic lesions in retaining calcium relative to phosphorus. The clinical double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 95 patients showed a statistically significant worse deterioration of the hearing los
