This study identifies components of personal competence and community adjustment in a national sample of persons with mental retardation living in residential facilities of six or fewer residents. Factor analysis of 65 variables yielded an 8 principal component solution that accounted for approximately half the total variance in the observed variables (49%). The eight identified components of personal competence and community adjustment were labeled (1) Self Care and Functional Personal Living Skills, (2) Community Living Skills, (3) Home Living Skills, (4) Problem Behavior, (5) Community Trai

BACKGROUND: The majority of children in foster care 24 months or longer experience three or more placements. Children's behavior problems are a primary contributor to multiple moves, but little is known about how behavior problems and other stressors lead to disruptions. This study focused on foster parents' experiences of parenting a child at risk for moves using the determinants of parenting model (Belsky, 1984) to identify potential correlates of difficult parenting experiences and placement disruption.
OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with difficult parenting experiences and plac

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The fact that particular parents suffer afflictions limiting their ability to care does not mean that they should automatically be deemed unsuitable parents. Prompted by neonatal team concerns about child-care issues, a local multidisciplinary group was set up to care for substance-abusing pregnant women in our region.
DESIGN AND METHODS: This project was conducted in order to review the records of all the women who had been discussed at our management planning meetings over the past 5 years. Our assessment tool records were reviewed and analysed using spss.
RESULTS: A

BACKGROUND: Trajectories through child protection services involving out-of-home care (OHC) are diverse, yet studies of OHC and school-to-work transitions often overlook this heterogeneity.
METHODS: Using monthly records for three complete Norwegian birth cohorts (1994-1996; N = 172,638), we identified five OHC trajectory clusters among individuals with OHC before age 18 (N = 4789). These clusters were based on placement timing, duration and type. Individuals without OHC were included as a non-OHC group. We examined how cluster membership, together with care instability, is associated with pr

Adolescents in out-of-home care face heightened risks of mental health disorders, yet less is known about the broader range of mental health symptoms and their development over time. This study examines self-reported mental health complaints among adolescents in foster family care compared to their peers in the general population. Using repeated cross-sectional data from the Stockholm School Survey (2004-2022), which includes approximately 114,000 participants, 1 % of whom live in foster family care, the study analyzes differences in prevalence and explores temporal trends of these complaints,

This study conceptually contributes to the literature by exploring how post-traumatic growth (PTG) may function as a protective psychological mechanism that mitigates caregiving burden in home-based palliative care contexts. This descriptive study included 175 home healthcare patients and their caregivers. Data were collected using the Sociodemographic Data Form, the Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale, and the Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory. A significant negative correlation was found between PTG and caregiver burden (r = -0.342, p = .01). Beyond the statistical association, these findings suggest

The significant mental health needs of young people in out-of-home care has been well-documented. However, there is little empirical evidence on the timing or development of these difficulties, once these young people have been removed from the maltreatment-environment. Such information may provide useful clinical insight in to how problems develop and persist and whether intervention timings may allow for the prevention of later mental health problems. The current service-data study explored the emotional and behavioural symptom trajectories of 207 young people under the long-term care of a l

Editor-in-Chief's Note: On September 27, 2025, ANNA and ASN collaborated on a one-day meeting at ANNA's Nephrology Nursing Summit to bring nurses and physicians together to discuss important issues in nephrology. This article is based on the panel discussion on home dialysis that focused on how innovative solutions as well as best practices can enhance patient care, improve outcomes, and reduce health care burden, while also fostering a collaborative approach between nurses and physicians. The recorded version of the panel discussion is available in ANNA's Online Library (https://library.annan

OBJECTIVE: Children who spend time in foster care are at risk for adverse developmental outcomes, including sleep problems. Yet, research examining sleep and emotional memory has primarily focused on children with no history of foster care placement. Additionally, most accounts of sleep problems among children with a foster care history rely on caregiver-report rather than objective measures. This study examined emotional memory and sleep using both objective and subjective reports.
METHODS: Participants included 3- to 5-year-old children who were adopted from foster care in the U.S. (n = 32)

BACKGROUND: In Austria, there is a significant research gap concerning the quality of out-of-home care (OoHC) provisions and their capacity to promote children's well-being and development. Given the intrusive nature of such interventions, thorough evaluation is essential. This study protocol outlines a multi-method, long-term, and multi-perspective study that investigates: 1) the circumstances leading to full-time residential care placements; 2) the development of behavioral, emotional, and social factors over time; 3) key factors influencing children's outcomes in residential care 4) the str

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment and disruptions in attachment relationships have been linked to higher levels of dissociation.
OBJECTIVE: This study explored the influences of birth parent-child attachment, caregiver-child attachment, and placement duration on dissociative symptoms among youth living in out-of-home care.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Youth with histories of maltreatment who were recently placed in out-of-home care (N = 310; Mage = 10.25; 48.9 % female).
METHODS: A moderated mediation analysis was employed to examine the effects of birth parent-child attachment on dissociation, a

Early relationships between a caregiver and their child set the foundations for many aspects of the child's development. Exposure to abuse or neglect can negatively impact the security and stability within these early relationships. The aim of this project was to characterise the association between carer-child relationship quality and child's mental health over a period of 2.5 years. We used data collected between 2011 and 2022 as part of the Best Services Trial (BeST?). The sample consisted of 220 children entering foster/kinship care who were between 0.08 (0.96 months) and 5.58 years at fir

BACKGROUND: Prenatal drug exposure (PDE) is a global public health problem that is strongly associated with the need for child protection services, including placement into out-of-home care (OOHC). We aimed to assess school outcomes for children with PDE (both with and without neonatal abstinence syndrome [NAS]) and the association of school performance with OOHC.
METHODS: Using linked population health, OOHC, and school test data, we compared results on the Australian standardised curriculum-based test, the National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), for children with PDE who

This article presents preliminary findings from an impact study that drew upon administrative data collected by city agencies and data collected by a supportive housing program for young adults who are aging out of foster care, homeless, or at risk of homelessness. Participation in the program was associated with a reduction in shelter use and jail stays during the two years after program entry. The study demonstrates the benefits of collaboration and the possibilities of using administrative data from multiple public agencies to evaluate program impacts on young adult outcomes.

Rhythmicity is a fundamental property of neural activity at multiple spatiotemporal scales, and associated oscillations represent a critical mechanism for communication and transmission of information across brain regions. During development, these oscillations evolve dynamically as a function of neural maturation and may be modulated by early experiences, positive and/or negative. This study investigated the impact of psychosocial deprivation associated with institutional rearing in early life and the effects of subsequent foster care intervention on developmental trajectories of neural oscil

OBJECTIVE: Although foster care placement is often preceded by stressful events such as child abuse, foster care itself often exposes children to additional severe stressors. A history of foster care, as well as the childhood abuse that often precedes it, is common among homeless young adults. This study examined whether a history of foster care was associated with psychiatric disorders, prior psychiatric counseling, prescription of psychiatric medications, and prior psychiatric hospitalization among newly homeless young adults.
METHODS: A consecutive sample of 423 adults aged 18 to 21 years

This study examined classifications of attachment in 42-month-old Romanian children (N = 169). Institutionalized since birth, children were assessed comprehensively, randomly assigned to care as usual (CAU) or to foster care, and compared to family-reared children. Attachment classifications for children in foster care were markedly different from those in the CAU. Importantly, children placed in foster care before 24 months were more likely to have secure attachments and if placed earlier were less likely to have disorganized or insecure-other attachments. Cognitive status predicted greater l
