The chromosomal constitution of 9 dwarf (D) and 8 semidwarf (SD) lines derived by crossing hexaploid Triticale line NA-75 (AABBRR, 2n = 6x = 42) with Triticumaestivum (AABBDD, 2n = 6x = 42) cv. Chinese Spring was investigated using molecular cytogenetic techniques: fluorescence in situ hybridization and genomic in situ hybridization. A wheat-rye translocation (T4DS.7RL), 8 substitution lines, and a ditelosomic addition line (7RSdt) were identified. In the substitution lines, 1, 2, or 4 pairs of wheat chromosomes, belonging to the A, B, or D genome, were replaced by rye chromosomes. Substitutio

West African Dwarf (WAD) goats are extremely important in the rural village economy of West Africa, but still little is known about their biology, ecology and capacity to cope with gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections. Here, we summarise the history of this breed and explain its economic importance in rural West Africa. We review recent work showing that Nigerian WAD goats are highly trypanotolerant and resist infections with Haemonchus contortus more effectively than other breeds of domestic goat (haemonchotolerance). We believe that haemonchotolerance is largely responsible for the gen

The role of sex-specific demography in hybridization and admixture of genetically diverged species and populations is essential to understand the origins of the genomic diversity of sexually reproducing organisms. In order to infer how sex-linked loci have been differentiated undergoing frequent hybridization and admixture, we examined 17 whole-genome sequences of seven species representing the genus Macaca, which shows frequent inter-specific hybridization and predominantly female philopatry. We found that hybridization and admixture were prevalent within these species. For three cases of sug

Eight microsatellite loci, recently developed in the species Anisakis pegreffii, were successfully amplified in Anisakis berlandi, sibling species of the A. simplex (s. l.) complex. They were validated on adult specimens (n = 46) of the parasite species, collected from two individuals of the definitive host, the long-finned pilot whale Globicephala melas from New Zealand waters. Among the eight loci scored, one, Anisl 07132, had null alleles in A. berlandi and was thus excluded from the subsequent genetic analysis. Two loci, Anisl 00314 and Anisl 10535, were monomorphic. In addition, as also p

BACKGROUND: Indigenous sheep of Greece represent important genetic resources shaped by long-term adaptation to diverse environments. However, many populations face demographic decline, genetic erosion, and their genomic diversity remains inadequately characterized. This study presents a comprehensive genome-wide analysis of both recognized and previously uncharacterized indigenous Greek sheep. Newly genotyped data from 36 Greek breeds/populations, one Cypriot breed and one outgroup (Cypriot Mouflon) were combined with previously published genotypes from 85 international breeds and four additio

A cross-sectional survey on bovine fasciolosis was conducted in the Binh Dinh province of Central Vietnam that was previously identified as hyperendemic for human fasciolosis. In Vietnam, both pure Fasciola gigantica and hybrid and/or introgressed populations of liverflukes bearing genetic material from both Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica infect humans and animals. In this study, 825 cattle were randomly selected from 8 of the 11 provincial districts for faecal collection; blood samples were taken from 400 of these animals. Fasciola eggs and antibodies against Fasciola were detected by a q

Dengue represents an increasing public health burden worldwide. In Africa, underreporting and misdiagnosis often mask its true epidemiology, and dengue is likely to be both more widespread than reported data suggest and increasing in incidence and distribution. Wolbachia-based dengue control is underway in Asia and the Americas but has not to date been deployed in Africa. Due to the genetic heterogeneity of African Aedes aegypti populations and the complexity of the host-symbiont interactions, characterization of key parameters of Wolbachia-carrying mosquitoes is paramount for determining the

The IOWA strain of Cryptosporidium parvum is widely used in studies of the biology and detection of the waterborne pathogens Cryptosporidium spp. While several lines of the strain have been sequenced, IOWA-II, the only reference of the original subtype (IIaA15G2R1), exhibits significant assembly errors. Here we generated a fully assembled genome of IOWA-CDC of this subtype using PacBio and Illumina technologies. In comparative analyses of seven IOWA lines maintained in different laboratories (including two sequenced in this study) and 56 field isolates, IOWA lines (IIaA17G2R1) with less virule

The development of perpetual flowering (PF) cultivars revolutionized octoploid strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) cultivation by enabling nearly year-round fruit production and doubling fruit yields compared to historic seasonal flowering (SF) cultivars, which flower in spring. Most commercial PF cultivars result from the introgression of a dominant PERPETUAL FLOWERING (PF) allele at the PERPETUAL FLOWERING RUNNERING (PFRU) locus. PFRU has been genetically and physically mapped to chromosome 4B, but the causal gene(s) remain unknown. Here we used the haplotype-phased "UCD Royal Royce" (PFpf) g

The co-evolutionary arms race between crops and their parasites requires continuous identification of new resistance mechanisms. Broomrape (Orobanche cumana), a root parasitic plant, poses a severe threat to sunflower (Helianthus annuus) production, yet the genetic architecture underlying host resistance remains poorly understood. To address this, we established a high-throughput phenotyping platform to quantify root infestation across a diverse sunflower association mapping (SAM) population. Combining this phenotypic resource with a dual genome-wide association study (GWAS) strategy based on

Toxoplasma gondii is a global protozoan pathogen. Clonal lineages predominate in Europe, North America, Africa, and China, whereas highly recombinant parasites are endemic in South/Central America. Far East Asian T. gondii isolates are not included in current global population genetic structure analyses at WGS resolution. Here we report a genome-wide population study that compared eight Japanese and two Chinese isolates against representative worldwide T. gondii genomes using POPSICLE, a novel population structure analyzing software. Also included were 7 genomes resurrected from non-viable iso

In 2010, an outbreak of West Nile virus (WNV) infections occurred in the region of Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia, in northern Greece. During this period, Culex pipiens sensu stricto mosquitoes were found infected by WNV lineage 2. Cx. pipiens s.s. presents two distinct biological forms, denoted molestus and pipiens. Hybrids between the two forms may potentiate the accidental transmission of WNV to humans. We have genetically characterized the form composition of Cx. pipiens s.s. samples collected during the outbreak from the region of Thessaloniki, where WNV cases occurred, and from the regi

Allotetraploid durum wheat is the second most widely cultivated wheat, following hexaploid bread wheat, and is one of the major protein and calorie sources of the human diet. However, durum wheat is encountered with a severe grain yield bottleneck due to the erosion of genetic diversity stemming from long-term domestication and especially modern breeding programs. The improvement of yield and grain quality of durum wheat is crucial when confronted with the increasing global population, changing climate environments, and the non-ignorable increasing incidence of wheat-related disorders. This re

Environmental and genetic factors define the susceptibility of an individual to autoimmune disease. Although common genetic pathways affect general immunological tolerance mechanisms in autoimmunity, the effects of such genes could vary under distinct immune challenges within different tissues. In this study, we demonstrate this by observing that autoimmune type 1 diabetes-protective haplotypes at the insulin-dependent diabetes susceptibility region 10 (Idd10) introgressed from chromosome 3 of C57BL/6 (B6) and A/J mice onto the NOD background increase the severity of autoimmune primary biliary

Understanding gene flow between ploidy levels in polyploid complexes is essential for species delimitation and conservation. This study explores evolutionary dynamics in the polyploid complex Thymus sect. Mastichina (Lamiaceae), comprising three taxa: T. mastichina subsp. mastichina, T. mastichina subsp. donyanae, and the endangered T. albicans. Using Hyb-Seq data, phylogenomics (nuclear orthologs), and population genomics (SNPs), we confirm the section consists of two sister groups with distinct ploidy levels: a diploid and a tetraploid one. The tetraploid group shows low genetic differentiat

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Delimitation of species remains a major challenge in understanding biodiversity, particularly in recently diverged lineages, where extensive morphological variability complicates taxonomic inference. In this study, we investigate patterns of morphological and ecological variation within Thymus sect. Mastichina, a Mediterranean lineage that includes the endangered species Thymus albicans. Previous genomic analyses revealed clear differentiation between two major groups corresponding to ploidy levels, in addition to additional genetic structure among diploid lineages.

Fasciolosis is a parasitic disease affecting humans and livestock, caused by digenean trematodes of the genus Fasciola, primarily F. hepatica and F. gigantica. This study investigates the coexistence of these species and their hybrids in yaks from Tibet, China. We analyzed the nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions, including ITS1 and ITS2, through Sanger sequencing and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) to assess single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Our results reveal that one specimen (NM008B) is identical to pure F. hepatica, while another (NM008A) contains genetic informat

Pleistocene glaciations drove repeated range contractions and expansions shaping contemporary intraspecific diversity. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in the western and eastern Atlantic diverged >600,000 years before present, with the two lineages isolated in different southern refugia during glacial maxima, driving trans-Atlantic genomic and karyotypic divergence. Here, we investigate the genomic consequences of glacial isolation and trans-Atlantic secondary contact using 108,870 single nucleotide polymorphisms genotyped in 80 North American and European populations. Throughout North America,

In Africa, trypanosomosis is a tsetse-transmitted disease which represents the most important constraint to livestock production. Several indigenous West African taurine Bos taurus) breeds, such as the Longhorn (N'Dama) cattle are well known to control trypanosome infections. This genetic ability named "trypanotolerance" results from various biological mechanisms under multigenic control. The methodologies used so far have not succeeded in identifying the complete pool of genes involved in trypanotolerance. New post genomic biotechnologies such as transcriptome analyses are efficient in charac

In the expansive African region, goats display a diverse array of breeds that have evolved over time to adapt to varying local climates and environments. This study involved the analysis of 1591 samples, including 63 domestic breeds and 164 individuals from wild related species, focusing on genetic diversity, population structure, gene flow, selective signals, and landscape genomics. Our findings revealed lower genetic diversity in wild related species, particularly in the mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus). Gene flow was observed between wild Yura goats and North African populations. Introgr
