The facial nerve is the third most frequent location of intracranial schwannomas, with facial paresis the most common sign.(1,2) A 77-year-old woman presented with amnesia; the Mini-Mental State Examination score was 26, with normal cranial nerve function. A giant multicystic VII nerve schwannoma was identified in the left middle fossa, with components of the tumor in the temporal bone facial canal, geniculate ganglion, and internal auditory canal (figure). Compression of the hippocampus may have accounted for the clinical presentation. The middle fossa component of the tumor was resected for

Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy in which the optic nerve axons are damaged, resulting in death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). The primary region of damage is thought to be the optic nerve head (ONH), with the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and optic radiations to the visual cortex being secondarily affected. Neurotrophin deprivation resulting from optic nerve injury is thought to cause RGCs to die by apoptosis by inhibition of cell survival pathways. However, disruption of retrograde axonal transport is not the only mechanism associated with optic nerve damage and RGC death, and thus, an

The management of facial nerve injury resulting from temporal bone fracture continues to be a topic of discussion. The indications for surgery as well as the proper timing and extent of surgical exploration are the principal questions debated. This study reviews a large series of patients (26), treated for facial paralysis following a longitudinal temporal bone fracture. The most frequent site of injury was the area of the geniculate ganglion. The injury to the facial nerve was often severe. We recommend early exploration in these cases when electrical studies indicate a severe injury. In most

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is characterized by varicella zoster virus infection affecting the geniculate ganglion of the facial nerve. It typically presents with vesicles in the external auditory canal associated with auricular pain and peripheral facial nerve paralysis. Although vestibulocochlear nerve is frequently co-involved during the course of Ramsay Hunt syndrome, multiple lower cranial nerve involvement has rarely been described in the literature. In addition, laryngitis due to varicella zoster virus is a diagnostic challenge due to its unfamiliarity among clinicians. We report a case of Ram

Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) is a rare, severe complication of varicella-zoster virus reactivation in the geniculate ganglion, characterized by hearing loss, pain, and vesicles in the ear or mouth along with ipsilateral facial palsy. Although it is rare, it is more commonly found with immunodeficiency conditions. We report a case of a 35-year-old human immunodeficiency virus positive male, having CD4+ count of 336/μl, who presented with RHS and had vertigo, painful vesicular eruptions on the right ear and unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. He was treated immediately with valacyclovir and pre

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a rare complication of herpes zoster disease in which reactivation of latent varicella zoster virus infection occurs in the geniculate ganglion causing otalgia, unilateral vesicular eruption in a restricted dermatomal distribution, and peripheral facial paralysis. Dermal infections caused by human pathogenic herpes viruses are common in organ transplant recipients. For a transplant surgeon, it is imperative to remember that viral prophylaxis is essential in the follow-up of the transplant patients. Here, we presented a case of renal transplant and Ramsay Hunt syndrome w

Once photons have activated photosensitive cell receptors, a biochemical process mediated by G-proteins transforms the initial signal into nerve potentials. The generated impulses transmit the information through ganglion cells, after a complex interaction with other neurons by means of different neurotransmitters. Since visual function is processed in parallel, ganglion cells are divided into M-neurons which are in charge of capturing large objects, P-neurons capable of analyzing fine details and colors, and non-M, non-P neurons which are sensitive to changes in light intensity. Mouse disease models have proven indispensable in glaucoma research, yet the complexity of the vast number of models and mouse strains has also led to confusing findings. In this study, we evaluated baseline intraocular pressure, retinal histology, and retinofugal projections in three mouse strains commonly used in glaucoma research, i.e. C57Bl/6, C57Bl/6-Tyr(c), and CD-1 mice. We found that the mouse strains under study do not only display moderate variations in their intraocular pressure, retinal architecture, and retinal ganglion cell density, also the retinofugal projections to the dorsal

Facial nerve schwannoma (FNS) is an extremely rare benign tumour that may arise anywhere along the course of the facial nerve; the standard treatment is total removal via microsurgery. Stereotactic radiotherapy has been shown to be effective in the treatment of skull base tumours, in particular for acoustic neuromas; it is interesting to notice that also the few data existing in literature about the use of radiotherapy for non acoustic schwannomas show an excellent local control rate and few adverse effects. Here we report a case of facial nerve neuroma, involving the nerve sheath from the gen

Perineural invasion of cranial nerves, including the facial nerve by squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, is a poor prognostic factor for recurrent disease and disease-specific mortality. We discuss 2 patients who presented to the Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery service with complete facial nerve paralysis and a history of skin cancer. Based on our experience with these patients, we recommend that patients who present with facial nerve paralysis and a history of cutaneous malignancy undergo aggressive management including early intervention and complete exploration of the facial nerve fro

Vision loss in glaucoma is associated with death of retinal ganglion cells. High intraocular pressure is a major risk factor for vision loss from glaucoma, and lowering eye pressure is the goal of all available medical and surgical treatments. Taking a bold step forward, the restoration of vision after severe glaucoma damage is a new Audacious Goal established by National Eye Institute (Sieving, 2012). This means that retinal ganglion cell repair, and replacement, must be considered in the context of visual function restoration. To restore visual function, retinal ganglion cells, after long-di

In birds, the nucleus of the basal optic root (nBOR) and the nucleus lentiformis mesencephali (LM) are retinal-recipient nuclei involved in the analysis of optic flow and the generation of the optokinetic response. The nBOR receives retinal input from displaced ganglion cells (DGCs), which are found at the margin of the inner nuclear and inner plexiform layers, rather than the ganglion cell layer. The LM receives afferents from retinal ganglion cells, but whether DGCs also project to LM remains unclear. To resolve this issue, we made small injections of retrograde tracer into LM and examined h

The Nile grass rat (Arvicanthis niloticus) has a high proportion of cone photoreceptors (∼30-40%) compared with that in the common laboratory mouse and rat (∼1-3%) and may prove a preferable murine model with which to study cone-driven information processing in retina and primary visual centers. However, other than regions involved in circadian control, little is known about the retinorecipient structures in this rodent. We undertook a detailed analysis of the retinal projections as revealed after intravitreal injection of the anterograde tracer cholera toxin subunit B. Retinal efferents were

Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is characterized by retinal ganglion cell (RGC) degeneration with the preferential involvement of those forming the papillomacular bundle. The optic nerve is considered the main pathological target for LHON. Our aim was to investigate the possible involvement of the post-geniculate visual pathway in LHON patients. We used diffusion-weighted imaging for in vivo evaluation. Mean diffusivity maps from 22 LHON visually impaired, 11 unaffected LHON mutation carriers and 22 healthy subjects were generated and compared at level of optic radiation (OR). Prefr

BACKGROUND: Retina and/or optic nerve injury may cause irreversible blindness, due to degeneration of retinal ganglion cells. We and others have previously shown that the intravitreal injection of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) protects injured retinal ganglion cells and stimulates their regeneration after optic nerve injury, but the long-term effects of this therapy are still unknown.
METHODS: We injected rat MSC (rMSC) intravitreally in adult (3-5 months) Lister Hooded rats of either sex after optic nerve crush. Retinal ganglion cell survival, axonal regeneration, and reconnection were analy

To our knowledge, this is the first description of the histopathology of the temporal bone from a case of craniodiaphyseal dysplasia. The air spaces of the mastoid, external auditory canal, and middle ear cavity are reduced by hyperostotic bone. The ossicles are also deformed by the bony overgrowth. Anomalous ossicles with hyperostosis could affect the air conduction. Even though the internal auditory canal is somewhat elongated and narrow, no labyrinthine abnormalities can be attributed to the abnormal bone. Facial nerves run through abnormal courses but the geniculate ganglion cells are not

14 kittens of 2-4 weeks were randomly divided into normal (N) and monocular deprivation (MD) groups. PVEP was tested before and after monocular deprivation by blepharorrhaphy for 12 weeks, when development of amblyopia was confirmed. Under TEM, the central retinal ganglion cells, the ipsilateral geniculate nucleus layers, the neurons of layer IV of visual cortex area 17, and the neural synapses of MD and N eyes were examined to find that atrophic and degenerative changes to various degrees existed in the MD eyes, supporting the authors belief that the functional changes in amblyopia were based

Behavioral perimetry methods were used to assess the monocular visual fields of 12 cats that had received intraocular injections of antibodies against large (alpha/Y) retinal ganglion cells. The antibodies produced defects in head and eye orientation responses to stimuli presented in the nasal visual field of the treated eye; responses to stimuli in the temporal visual hemifield were normal. Similar results were seen in cats that received antibody injections at 4 weeks of age or as adults. In the context of previous results, these findings suggest that a loss of Y cells in the lateral genicula
