Seven-month wintertime supplementation of 1200 IU vitamin D has no effect on hand grip strength in young, physically active males: A randomized, controlled study.

BACKGROUND: There has been a growing interest in the role of vitamin D for the well-being and physical performance of humans under heavy training such as conscripts in military service; however, there is a lack of long-term supplementation studies performed on members of this type of young, physically active, male population. The hypothesis of the study was that vitamin D supplementation during wintertime will decrease the prevalence of critically low vitamin D blood serum levels and increase hand grip strength during the winter season among young male conscripts. STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal,

Low Serum Vitamin E Level Associated with Low Hand Grip Strength in Community-Dwelling Adults: Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES VII) 2016-2018.

This study assessed the association between serum vitamin E levels and hand grip strength (HGS) in community-dwelling adults data of 1011 men aged 50 years and older and 1144 postmenopausal women were analyzed. Low HGS was defined as HGS below the sex-stratified median value. Proportion of low HGS was the greatest in the lowest quintile of serum vitamin E level (<10.51 mg/L, 57.1%), with a decreasing trend toward the highest vitamin E quintile (>17.81 mg/L, 43.6%; p < 0.001). A one-unit (mg/L) decrease in vitamin E levels was associated with lower HGS in men (adjusted beta coefficient -0.10, 9

Characteristics of Upper Limb Impairment Related to Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy: Development of a Sensitive Hand Assessment (Graded Redefined Assessment of Strength, Sensibility, and Prehension Version Myelopathy).

BACKGROUND: Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) involves spinal cord compression, which causes neurological decline. Neurological impairment in DCM is variable and can involve complex upper limb dysfunction including loss of manual dexterity, hyperreflexia, focal weakness, and sensory impairment. The modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association (mJOA) score relies on the patients' subjective perceptions, whereas existing objective measures such as strength and sensory testing do not capture subtle changes in dexterity and function. OBJECTIVE: 1) To characterize arm and hand function in DCM; a

Beyond the Malnutrition Screening Tool: Assessing Hand Grip Strength and Gastrointestinal Symptoms for Malnutrition Prediction in Outpatients with Chronic Kidney Disease Not on Kidney Replacement Therapy.

Background: The Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST) is commonly used to identify malnutrition risk; however it has demonstrated poor sensitivity to detect malnutrition in inpatients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and kidney replacement therapy (KRT) populations. Gastrointestinal symptoms, such as poor appetite, may better detect malnutrition. The accuracy of MST or other nutrition-related parameters to detect malnutrition in ambulatory patients with CKD stages 4-5 without KRT has not been evaluated. Methods: A single site retrospective audit of outpatient records from May 2020 to March 2025 w

Ipsilesional Mu Rhythm Desynchronization Correlates With Improvements in Affected Hand Grip Strength and Functional Connectivity in Sensorimotor Cortices Following BCI-FES Intervention for Upper Extremity in Stroke Survivors.

Stroke is a leading cause of acquired long-term upper extremity motor disability. Current standard of care trajectories fail to deliver sufficient motor rehabilitation to stroke survivors. Recent research suggests that use of brain-computer interface (BCI) devices improves motor function in stroke survivors, regardless of stroke severity and chronicity, and may induce and/or facilitate neuroplastic changes associated with motor rehabilitation. The present sub analyses of ongoing crossover-controlled trial NCT02098265 examine first whether, during movements of the affected hand compared to rest

High hand-grip strength asymmetry and mortality risk in community-dwelling Japanese middle-aged and older adults: Results from the National Institute for Longevity Sciences-Longitudinal Study of Aging.

BACKGROUND: Hand-grip strength (HGS) asymmetry may represent an indicator of overall health, yet its relationship with mortality risk remains underexplored at different cut-offs and populations. We aimed to investigate the association between HGS asymmetry and all-cause mortality in Japanese adults. METHODS: Overall, 3420 Japanese adults aged ≥40 years from the National Institute for Longevity Sciences-Longitudinal Study of Aging cohort were categorized into three HGS groups: symmetric (0 - 10 %, reference group), mildly-asymmetric (10-20 %), and highly-asymmetric (>20 %). Additional analyses
