Thirty-three adult hypospadiacs and 36 matched controls were investigated by means of Rorschach's test, in a double-blind design. From psychoanalytic theory predictions were made about the effects of the influences of the genital malformation and its treatment on the psychological adjustment. The hypospadiacs differed significantly from the controls as predicted. They exhibited more neurotic constriction with less ego-strength and less utilization of resources. Their anxiety and hostility levels were judged higher and they showed less self-esteem and activity as well as less capacity for inter

Women's ability to negotiate the conditions and circumstances of sexual relations is central to their sexual and reproductive health, including mitigating HIV risk. In Africa, gender-based power imbalances constrain women's sexual agency. Research has suggested that among couples in sub-Saharan African countries, such as Uganda and Nigeria, sexual decision making is defined by a 'normative precedent' in the form of a set of rules and practices conferring sexual authority on men. Using qualitative data among women in paid work and among men, this study explored interpersonal relations and sexua

Dampening and enhancing responses to positive affect have been linked to depressive symptoms. The main aim of the present study was to examine such responses in an interpersonal peer context and to examine their relation with depressive symptoms. A community sample of 665 seventh-graders (52.0% girls, Mage = 12.7 years) took part in the study. Using a newly developed questionnaire, the Co-Dampening and Co-Enhancing Questionnaire (CoDEQ), a two-factor model distinguishing co-dampening and co-enhancing was validated. Relations with general depressive symptoms, anhedonic symptoms, and friendship

High levels of trait hostility are associated with wide-ranging interpersonal deficits and heightened physiological response to social stressors. These deficits may be attributable in part to individual differences in the perception of social cues. The present study evaluated the ability to recognize facial emotion among 48 high hostile (HH) and 48 low hostile (LH) smokers and whether experimentally-manipulated acute nicotine deprivation moderated relations between hostility and facial emotion recognition. A computer program presented series of pictures of faces that morphed from a neutral emo

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relations between leaders' communication styles and charismatic leadership, human-oriented leadership (leader's consideration), task-oriented leadership (leader's initiating structure), and leadership outcomes. METHODOLOGY: A survey was conducted among 279 employees of a governmental organization. The following six main communication styles were operationalized: verbal aggressiveness, expressiveness, preciseness, assuredness, supportiveness, and argumentativeness. Regression analyses were employed to test three main hypotheses. FINDINGS

Hate, an intense negative emotion, can disrupt and damage interpersonal relationships following transgressions. Despite its destructive potential, the psychological mechanism that fuels hate remains poorly understood. Anger has been identified as a primary component of hate, yet anger and hate differ in their appraisal tendencies and motivational goals. This raises a critical question: how does anger contribute to the emergence of hate? To address this, the present study examined the interplay among anger, anger rumination, grudge, and hate. A total of 740 participants completed self-report me

BACKGROUND: The mentalization-based perspective of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) underscores fluctuating interpersonal functionality, believed to arise from suboptimal mentalization modes, including hyper- and hypomentalizing. The connection between ineffective mentalizing and specific BPD challenges remains ambiguous. Network theory offers a unique means to investigate the hypothesis that distinct yet interconnected mental challenges ('symptoms') construct 'disorders' through their continuous mutual interactions. This study aimed to probe the pairwise interrelations between ineffectiv

The scientific evidence suggests that COVID-19 is affecting much more than the physical health of individuals, particularly in places where a lockdown has been established to slow down the spread of the virus. An area that may be particularly affected is human sexuality. This study explored the impact of the situation generated by COVID-19 on the sexuality of 201 adults living in Spain. We collected data cross-sectionally through an online survey during the month of April 2020. Results showed a reduction of sexual self-esteem and a decrease in the number of interpersonal sexual relations, alth

Creating real-life dynamic contexts to study interactive behaviors is a fundamental challenge for the social neuroscience of interpersonal relations. Real synchronic interpersonal motor interactions involve online, inter-individual mutual adaptation (the ability to adapt one's movements to those of another in order to achieve a shared goal). In order to study the contribution of the left anterior Intra Parietal Sulcus (aIPS) (i.e. a region supporting motor functions) to mutual adaptation, here, we combined a behavioral grasping task where pairs of participants synchronized their actions when p

Suicide risk is elevated among college-aged students and individuals exposed to cumulative interpersonal trauma. This study used the interpersonal theory of suicide as a framework to test the relation between cumulative interpersonal trauma and suicide ideation through the indirect effects of cumulative interpersonal trauma via depression, thwarted belongingness (TB), and perceived burdensomeness (PB), in serial. Participants were 261 college students who endorsed prior trauma and completed cross-sectional study measures online. An atemporal serial mediation model indicated that cumulative int

The Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) integrates several theoretical models of personality functioning, including interpersonal theory. The interpersonal circumplex dimensions of warmth and dominance can be conceptualized as traits similar to those in AMPD Criterion B, but interpersonal theory also offers dynamic hypotheses about how these variables that change from moment to moment, which help to operationalize some of the processes alluded to in AMPD Criterion A. In the psychotherapy literature, dynamic interpersonal behaviors are thought to be critical for identifying therap

Peer interactions take on increasing importance for youth in middle childhood and adolescence. Autistic youth face particular challenges interacting with non-autistic peers; thus, it is critical to understand factors that predict interaction enjoyment for autistic and non-autistic youth. One candidate predictor is interpersonal motion synchrony. Experimentally induced motion synchrony leads to interpersonal liking and closeness, but these outcomes from experimental synchrony may not generalize to synchrony that naturally occurs in interpersonal interactions. Computer vision approaches allow fo

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal trauma is a risk factor for a wide array of adverse mental health outcomes, including substance use. Research has begun investigating the role of shame in the intersection between substance use and interpersonal trauma. The current systematic review summarizes the existing literature documenting the relation among shame, substance use, and interpersonal trauma.
METHOD: Articles were collected using a Boolean search strategy of terms related to interpersonal trauma, substance use, and shame across six databases. Independent search and screening by three researchers le

Classic psychedelic studies involve interpersonal interactions with participants before, during, and after the acute effects of psychedelics. In the field of psychedelic research, there is currently a debate about whether this interpersonal interaction is most accurately considered "psychological support," "psychotherapy," or something else. Proponents of the psychological support label describe the interpersonal interaction in most classic psychedelic studies as aimed at safety, while proponents of the psychotherapy label argue that the interpersonal interaction involves intervening on psycho

Co-rumination refers to the extended and/or recurring discussion of issues in social relationships. The extant research tends to conceptualize co-rumination in terms of general interaction styles, commonly between individuals who act as a source of support for one another. Little work has examined co-rumination in conflict contexts, between victims and offenders, as an event-specific process to come to terms with wrongdoing. The present research develops and validates a new scale measuring three distinct approaches to transgression-related co-rumination: co-reflection, co-brooding, and co-avoi

Childhood adversity alters the relational world of the child and inhibits the development of secure attachment bonds. The purpose of this article is to survey recent evidence that attachment insecurity has the potential to impair physical health throughout the lifespan. It is proposed that attachment insecurity contributes to disease risk through a range of mechanisms which include (1) disturbances in arousal and recovery within physiological systems that respond to stress; (2) physiological links between the mediators of social relationships, stress, and immunity; (3) links between relationsh

BACKGROUND: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI; concussion) is a common and costly public health concern that exhibits diverse patterns of recovery, making ascertainment of prognosis difficult. Interpersonal factors are critical determinants of health and linked to both adjustment to injury and illness and may critically impact mTBI outcomes. However, their potential role remains largely unexplored at present.
OBJECTIVES: To provide a framework for incorporating interpersonal factors into the study and treatment of mTBI.
METHODS: We provide a narrative summary of the existing literature on ad

This commentary highlights the importance of articulating Ashley Thomas's perspective on representations of social relationships with a reflection on the rules that constitute or sustain them. This approach may also help bridge the gap between developmental studies on intuitive sociology and both theoretical and empirical research in scholarly sociology.
