Change in elevation predicts 100 km ultra marathon performance.

The 100-km ultra-marathon is one of the most popular ultra-marathon distances. While we have a lot of scientific knowledge, no data exist about the influence of race course characteristics and other geographical aspects, on race performance. Therefore, the aims of this study were (i) to investigate where the fastest 100-km races are held and where the fastest runners originate from, (ii) to evaluate a potential influence of specific race characteristics (i.e., influence of elevation and race course characteristics) on performance, and (iii) to assess the influence of individual athlete perform

Case report on the marathon preparation of two middle-aged women aiming for a 4-hour finish.

BACKGROUND: Recreational marathoners targeting the 4-h benchmark are underrepresented in the literature compared with elite runners, despite constituting a substantial share of participants. This case report documents the multifactorial, real-world preparation undertaken by two eumenorrheic middle-aged women and examines how training load, nutritional education, changes in body mass and composition, race-day weather conditions, and pacing strategy collectively contributed to an ∼20% improvement in performance. METHODS: The retrospective analysis included training records from the 26 weeks pre

Heat stroke during a 'run for fun': A case report.

An athlete taking part in a mini-marathon race on a cold mid-winter morning collapsed with heat stroke after completing 19,5 km. To stop himself coughing during the run, he had taken a proprietary cough mixture containing 18 mg of the phenothiazine antihistaminic, promethazine, before the start. A possible explanation for the development of heat stroke is that the promethazine interfered with the body's ability to dissipate the enormous endogenous heat load which is generated during the course of a marathon race.

An analysis of the 6-h ultra-marathon race using a machine learning approach.

BACKGROUND: Ultra-marathon running popularity is increasing, with the 6-h run being the shortest time-limited ultra-marathon. Since very little is known regarding the country from which the fastest 6-h runners originate, the fastest age group, and where the fastest 6-h race courses are located, this study aims to close this gap. METHODS: A machine learning model based on the XG Boost algorithm was built to predict running speed based on the athletés age, gender, country of origin, and the country where the race takes place. Model explainability tools were used to investigate how each independ

Increased risk of acute kidney injury in the first part of an ultra-trail-Implications for abandonment.

Acute kidneys injuries (AKIs) have been described in marathon and trail running. The currently available data allows assessment of before/after comparisons but does not allow an analysis of what happens during the race. A multidisciplinary assessment protocol was performed during the first trail of Clécy (Normandy France) in November 2021. This allowed an initial assay to be carried out, then at the end of each of the 6 loops of 26 km, and finally after 24 h of recovery. The race extends over 156 km in hilly terrain and 6000 m of elevation gain (D+). The level of impairment according to the RI

Marathon progress: demography, morphology and environment.

As opposed to many other track-and-field events, marathon performances still improve. We choose to better describe the reasons for such a progression. The 100 best marathon runners archived from January 1990 to December 2011 for men and from January 1996 to December 2011 for women were analysed. We determined the impact of historical, demographic, physiological, seasonal and environmental factors. Performances in marathons improve at every level of performance (deciles). In 2011, 94% of the 100 best men athletes were African runners; among women athletes they were 52%. Morphological indicators

A Randomized Study of a Strength Training Program to Prevent Injuries in Runners of the New York City Marathon.

BACKGROUND: Lower extremity overuse injuries are common among runners, especially first-time marathoners. Hip abductor and quadriceps strengthening is often recommended to reduce running-related injuries. HYPOTHESIS: A 12-week strength training program would decrease the rate of overuse injuries resulting in marathon noncompletion and improve race finishing time. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized trial. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 2. METHODS: Twelve weeks before the New York City Marathon, first-time marathon runners age 18 years and older were randomized into a strength training group or an observati

The 100-mile run: preparation, performance, and recovery. A case report.

This study analyzed the training methods and racing techniques of 12 athletes who have completed 100-mile runs. It showed that use of aspirin during the race can be dangerous if the run takes place in hot weather. No other consistent correlation was evident, however, between the variables examined and the finishing times. The findings suggest that an average marathoner can finish the 100-mile run without modifying his training program.

Recovery with vistula tart cherries following a marathon.

PURPOSE: Long-distance running induces marked increases in inflammation and muscle damage. Tart cherries (TC) have become a popular nutritional strategy for exercise recovery, particularly for attenuation of markers associated with muscle damage and inflammation. RESEARCH QUESTION: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of a yet-to-be-explored cultivar (Vistula) of TC on recovery following a marathon. METHODS: Thirty-five recreationally trained marathon runners (mean ± SD age, stature, and mass were 40 ± 10 years old, 176.5 ± 10.2 cm, and 78.8 ± 13.8 kg, respectively) completed an u

Socioeconomic status and motivation in endurance sports: insights from long-distance running.

INTRODUCTION: Endurance running is a popular activity with varying motivations, yet the influence of socioeconomic status (SES) on these motivations has not been thoroughly explored. This study investigates how SES (income, education, vocational status) shapes the motivations of three groups of runners: recreational runners (RRs), marathoners (MAs), and ultramarathoners (Us) in Poland. METHODS: A large-scale online survey (N = 1,539) was conducted between January and March 2008, capturing participants' demographic characteristics, running experience, and motivation. RESULTS: The results reve

[Anorexia/bulimia nervosa and mitral valve prolapse in a marathon runner].

A 23-year-old male student (height 180 cm, weight 63 kg) without any cardiac symptoms underwent a cardiological examination and consultation before a marathon run. A holosystolic mitral valve prolapse was discovered. After the marathon run he developed anorexia nervosa, interrupted by brief bulimic periods, to a minimal weight of 48 kg. After psychosomatic in-patient treatment and a weight gain to 60 kg an anorexic period recurred and he lost weight. In this phase he had an iron deficiency anaemia (Hb 11.9 g/dl), leucopenia (2,900/microliters) and (compared with the status at the first examina

Central Suppression of the GH/IGF Axis and Abrogation of Exercise-Related mTORC1/2 Activation in the Muscle of Phenotype-Selected Male Marathon Mice (DUhTP).

The somatotropic axis is required for a number of biological processes, including growth, metabolism, and aging. Due to its central effects on growth and metabolism and with respect to its positive effects on muscle mass, regulation of the GH/IGF-system during endurance exercise is of particular interest. In order to study the control of gene expression and adaptation related to physical performance, we used a non-inbred mouse model, phenotype-selected for high running performance (DUhTP). Gene expression of the GH/IGF-system and related signaling cascades were studied in the pituitary gland a

Surgical excision of bilateral patella stress fractures in an elite marathon runner.

Vertical stress fractures of the patella are rare, with only a handful of bilateral cases reported. Stress fractures in the athletic community are often due to repetitive strain and submaximal loading, with minimal recovery time. An Olympic marathon runner in her 30s presented with right anterolateral knee pain. MRI revealed an acutely displaced vertical fracture of the lateral patella. After failure of non-operative treatment, she underwent surgical excision of the fracture fragment and lateral patellofemoral retinacular repair. Despite return to light training pain-free 3 weeks after surgery
