Biomechanical behavior of novel composite PMMA-CaP bone cements in an anatomically accurate cadaveric vertebroplasty model.

Vertebral compression fractures are caused by many factors including trauma and osteoporosis. Osteoporosis induced fractures are a result of loss in bone mass and quality that weaken the vertebral body. Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, involving cement augmentation of fractured vertebrae, show promise in restoring vertebral mechanical properties. Some complications however, are reported due to the performance characteristics of commercially available bone cements. In this study, the biomechanical performance characteristics of two novel composite (PMMA-CaP) bone cements were studied using an an

Microanatomy of the cervical and anorectal squamocolumnar junctions: a proposed model for anatomical differences in HPV-related cancer risk.

Human papilloma virus (HPV) infection causes cancers and their precursors (high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions) near cervical and anal squamocolumnar junctions. Recently described cervical squamocolumnar junction cells are putative residual embryonic cells near the cervical transformation zone. These cells appear multipotential and share an identical immunophenotype (strongly CK7-positive) with over 90% of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions and cervical carcinomas. However, because the number of new cervical cancers discovered yearly world wide is 17-fold that of anal cancer,

Validation and re-evaluation of a discriminant model predicting anatomic suitability for biventricular repair in neonates with aortic stenosis.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to validate and re-evaluate our previously reported scoring systems for predicting optimal management in neonates with aortic stenosis (AS). BACKGROUND: In 1991, we reported a multivariate discriminant equation and an ordinal scoring system for predicting which neonates with AS are suitable for biventricular repair and which are better served by single ventricle management. METHODS: Retrospective analysis was performed to: 1) validate our scoring systems in 89 additional neonates with AS and normal mitral valve area, 2) assess the effects of 5% measu

Anatomical and functional recovery by embryonic stem cell-derived neural tissue of a mouse model of brain damage.

We have treated undifferentiated mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells with all-trans retinoic acid (RA) to induce differentiation in vitro into neuron-like cells with good cell viability for use as a graft. Furthermore, we asked whether the RA-induced neuron-like cells restored neurological dysfunction. To this end, the cells were transplanted into right hemiplegia model of mice, developed by a cryogenic injury of motor cortex. Motor function of the recipients was gradually improved, whereas little improvement was observed in control mice. The lesion showed clustering of mature and almost mature ne

Pathophysiology of congenital diaphragmatic hernia. XI: Anatomic and biochemical characterization of the heart in the fetal lamb CDH model.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the presence of bowel in the chest during development in the fetal lamb model of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) results in structural and/or biochemical hypoplasia of the left venticle. METHODS: The model was created at 80 days' gestation and delivered at term. The hearts were fixed in 4% formaldehyde solution, components weighed, and right ventricular (RV) and left ventricular (LV) wall thicknesses and both aortic (Ao) and pulmonary artery (PA) root diameters were measured. Fresh specimens were analyzed for protein, DNA, hydroxyp

Atrial reentry around an anatomic barrier with a partially refractory excitable gap. A canine model of atrial flutter.

We have characterized, in dogs, a model of inducible regular atrial tachycardia that resembles atrial flutter. The model involves creating a Y-shaped lesion comprised of an intercaval incision and a connected incision across the right atrium. It is suitable for serial studies of the effects of pacing or antiarrhythmic drugs in chronically instrumented animals studied in the awake state for at least several months. The postoperative cycle length of the induced tachycardia varies from 143 to 188 msec, depending on the size of the dog. The tachycardia cycle length was consistent for each dog, and

A novel artificial intelligence anatomical model for landmark recognition in endolaparoscopic totally extraperitoneal inguinal hernia repair.

BACKGROUND: Totally extraperitoneal (TEP) inguinal hernia repair demands precise recognition of posterior groin anatomy, yet the learning curve remains steep. We developed and evaluated an artificial intelligence (AI) model to identify key landmarks of the myopectineal orifice during TEP repair to support training and intraoperative guidance. METHODS: Thirty high-definition videos of unilateral elective TEP inguinal hernia repair were reviewed. From these, 1,946 image frames were extracted and annotated for six critical landmarks: pubic bone, inferior epigastric vessels, testicular vessels, v

Development of a cost-effective LiDAR-assisted photogrammetry workflow for high resolution 3D-AR anatomical modeling.

The integration of three-dimensional (3D) and augmented reality (AR) technologies into anatomy education facilitates broader access to anatomical content and enhances learner motivation and cognitive engagement by enabling interactive, spatially rich exploration of complex structures. However, high costs, technical complexity, and restricted access to specialized imaging equipment and software often hinder adoption of these digital anatomy tools. This study aimed to develop a smartphone-LiDAR-assisted photogrammetry workflow for generating low-cost, accessible and realistic 3D models for anato

Performance of multimodal large language models on image-based surgical anatomy, anatomical pathology, and radiology questions.

Multimodal large language models (LLMs) are now deeply integrated into medical education and widely used by medical students, yet it remains unclear whether current models possess the accuracy and reliability needed to support image-based learning. We evaluated four state-of-the-art multimodal LLMs (ChatGPT-5.1, Gemini-2.5, Grok-4, Claude Sonnet-4.5) on 208 image-based examination questions from a Doctor of Medicine program, spanning anatomical pathology (histopathology; 47.6%), radiology (31.7%), and surgical anatomy (20.7%). To isolate visual reasoning, all items were presented in image-only

A workflow for 3D printing highly accurate, customized human skull models for anatomical education and clinical practice.

Accurate representation of human skulls is essential for anatomy education and clinical training. Although real skulls are considered the gold standard, their use is limited by fragility, cost, ethical considerations, and restricted availability. Commercial plastic models are durable and accessible but are typically derived from standardized specimens and therefore lack anatomical variability, pathological features, and the precision required for professional education and clinical practice. This study aimed to establish and validate a workflow for producing anatomically accurate, durable, cus

Imaging of Artificial Tumor Models in an Anatomical Breast Phantom with a Single-Sided Magnetic Particle Imaging Scanner.

Background: Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) is an emerging biomedical imaging modality that detects superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), providing high contrast, sensitivity, and quantification capabilities without ionizing radiation, making it particularly suitable for cancer diagnostics. Considerable engineering efforts are underway to translate MPI technology to clinical settings. Most of these MPI scanners feature a cylindrical bore geometry similar to that of other clinical imaging modalities, which limits their potential application primarily to head scanning. Methods: We

A Novel Pulsatile Excised Porcine Lung Model for Realistic Anatomic Lung Resection Training: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a novel porcine lung model with pulmonary artery pulsation for anatomic lung resection training that overcomes the limitations of traditional excised models, particularly pulmonary oedema caused by simulated perfusion. METHODS: Porcine heart-lung complexes were connected to a custom-made pulse generator to induce physiologic pulsation using pseudoblood. To reduce the pulmonary oedema, the pulmonary arteries were prefilled with microbeads to prevent parenchymal perfusion. Oedema prevention was assessed by measurement of lung weight over 20 min of pulsation. Eight surgica

Beyond whole-image learning: anatomically partitioned deep learning models for superior sinonasal disease classification.

OBJECTIVES: Whole-image deep learning models for CT diagnosis of nasal cavity and paranasal sinus diseases often underperform because they disregard anatomical heterogeneity. We hypothesized that anatomically partitioned deep learning would enhance diagnostic accuracy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A multicenter retrospective study enrolled 2947 CT examinations conducted from October 2019 to May 2022. From these, 150 patients were randomly selected for manual segmentation, covering 13 anatomical regions, including the bilateral nasal cavities, maxillary sinuses, anterior ethmoid sinuses, posterior e

CSF outflow from the human spinal canal: preliminary results from an anatomical specimen-based model.

BACKGROUND: Recent discoveries focused on the role of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in metabolite clearance have initiated intense research on CSF circulation and outflow pathways. These studies have focused on the cranial subarachnoid space, whereas spinal outflow has been relatively less investigated. Moreover, most studies have been performed on rodent models, which allows thorough anatomical investigation, whereas evidence from humans has been generated primarily from in vivo neuroimaging techniques. In this paper, we introduce an anatomical specimen-based preparation for studying spinal CSF o

Feasibility of intratracheal tracheostomy sealing: anatomical adaptation and biocompatibility of a second-generation prototype in cadaveric and porcine models.

After decannulation, air leak through the tracheostoma can impair cough and voice. We evaluated a second-generation temporary intratracheal sealing disc that seals the stoma from within. Two preclinical sub-studies were performed: Sub-study 1 cadaveric deployment to assess anatomical fit, seal integrity, and removability; and Sub-study 2, a 7-day porcine implantation with anatomical compatibility and blinded histology. In cadavers, the sealing disc maintained airway patency and sealed the stoma, withstanding peak intratracheal pressures up to 180 cmH2O; removal through a near-healed opening re

A Rat Model of Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion/Reperfusion without Damaging the Anatomical Structure of Cerebral Vessels.

Ischemic stroke stands as the primary cause of long-term disability and mortality among adults worldwide. Animal models of ischemic stroke have significantly contributed to our understanding of its pathological mechanisms and the development of potential treatments. Presently, there are two common methods involving filament (endovascular suture) techniques to induce animal models of cerebral ischemia. However, these methods have inherent limitations, such as reduced blood perfusion to the brain, damage to the external carotid artery system, impaired food and/or water intake, and sensory dysfun

3D CT modeling demonstrates the anatomic feasibility of S1AI screw trajectory for spinopelvic fixation in neuromuscular scoliosis.

PURPOSE: In patients with neuromuscular scoliosis undergoing posterior spinal fusion, the S2 alar iliac (S2AI) screw trajectory is a safe and effective method of lumbopelvic fixation but can lead to implant prominence. Here we use 3D CT modeling to demonstrate the anatomic feasibility of the S1 alar iliac screw (S1AI) compared to the S2AI trajectory in patients with neuromuscular scoliosis. METHODS: This retrospective study used CT scans of 14 patients with spinal deformity to create 3D spinal reconstructions and model the insertional anatomy, max length, screw diameter, and potential for imp
