Objective: To investigate the effectiveness and safety of CT-guided intrapulmonary injection of indocyanine green (ICG) for preoperative localization of small pulmonary nodules and ground glass opacities. Methods: From October 2018 to July 2019, a total of 34 consecutive patients (39 nodules) who were suspected to be lung cancer and underwent thoracoscopic surgery were enrolled. The size of the nodules was 0.3-2.0 (0.9±0.3) cm, including 6 solid nodules, 9 impure ground glass nodules and 24 pure ground glass nodules. Before operation, ICG was injected into the lung under the guidance of CT for

BACKGROUND: With the increasing availability of chest computed tomography (CT), the detection of small pulmonary nodules has become more common, facilitating the development of lung segmental resection. However, anatomical variations of the bronchi are common, particularly in the right upper lobe of the lung.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of thoracoscopic resection of the posterior segment of the right upper lobe of the lung. Preoperatively, the nodule was believed to be located in the superior segment of the right lower lobe. However, intraoperative exploration revealed that the nodule

We describe for the first time a rare coexistence of a cardiac cavernous hemangioma with multiple pulmonary cavernous hemangiomas. Computed tomography revealed bilateral pulmonary nodules, left pleural effusion, and pericardial effusion. Positron emission tomography showed a pericardial neoplasm. Pathologically, multiple large dilated vascular spaces, lined by a single layer of endothelial cells and filled with blood, were revealed in both the cardiac tumor and the pulmonary nodules. Immunohistochemical examination of the lining cells showed positivity for CD31, FLI1, FVIII, and CD34. Taken to

INTRODUCTION: Multiple nodule sampling is a challenging scenario. While CT-guided biopsies are conventional, shape-sensing robotic-assisted bronchoscopy (ssRAB) has been proven to be safe and useful for assessing solitary nodules. However, its effectiveness in evaluating multiple pulmonary nodules remains unexplored. In this study, we aim to assess the safety and effectiveness of ssRAB for evaluating multiple pulmonary nodules.
METHODS: This retrospective study included patients who underwent ssRAB for multiple pulmonary nodule sampling from September 2019 to August 2024. Data on procedural t

A 77-year-old woman was found to have multiple granular shadows in the bilateral lungs and a right mammary mass on chest computed tomography (CT) scan for preoperative check of colorectal cancer. The right mammary mass was diagnosed as breast cancer as a result of vacuum-assisted breast biopsy. Fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography( FDG-PET) showed no abnormal uptake in the lung fields. Since a transbronchial lung biopsy did not establish a diagnosis, an incisional biopsy was performed via a thoracoscopic approach. The histology of the pulmonary nodules revealed minute pulmonary meni

BACKGROUND: Preoperative computed tomography (CT)-guided localization of small lung nodules is important for accurate and efficient video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). Resection of multiple small pulmonary nodules in one VATS procedure can aid in patient management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of CT-guided Patent Blue V (PBV) dye localization in patients with multiple pulmonary nodules who underwent VATS.
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted from January 2013 to December 2015. One hundred consecutive patients (59.9±10.5 years of age) with 217 nodul

Pulmonary lymphangiectasis is a rare anomaly in infancy that is characterized by dilatation of pulmonary lymphatic vessels resulting in fetal respiratory distress. Pulmonary lymphangiectasis is considered to occur exclusively in young children and neonates, and very few survive beyond an early age. We herein present an asymptomatic adult case of localized pulmonary lymphangiectasis with multiple nodules. A 27-year-old asymptomatic female presented with multiple nodules on chest computed tomogram images. An exploratory video-assisted thoracoscopy revealed multiple yellowish cysts on the viscera

Lung cancer is mostly characterized by a pulmonary solid mass on CT. In rare cases, patients do not have these typical manifestation but present with diffusely-distributed small nodules and pulmonary bullae, which can easily be misdiagnosed. A special case of lung adenocarcinoma was managed in our hospital from September 24th to December 19th in 2016. Under high-resolution CT,multiple nodules were seen in both lungs, mostly in the upper lungs, involving the pleura and interlobular fissures. Some nodules had cystic changes. A large bulla was seen in the left upper lung. Its wall was thickened with

BACKGROUND: Localization of multiple small lung nodules is the technical difficulty of minimally invasive operation resection. However, there are few clinical studies on the preoperative localization of multiple small lung nodules. This study was designed to evaluate the clinical value of preoperative computed tomography (CT) guided microcoil localization for multiple small lung nodules compared with single small lung nodule before video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS).
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 235 patients with preoperative pulmonary nodules microcoil l

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 53-year-old woman presented with recurrent episodes of cough and non-specific pulmonary symptoms. For many years she had been known to have primary biliary cirrhosis.
INVESTIGATIONS: The chest X-ray showed multiple pulmonary nodules. Microbiological examination did not detect any pathogen and transbronchial biopsy of the pulmonary nodules failed to provide a diagnosis. Histology of a surgical lung biopsy showed interstitial inflammation, vasculitis and non-caseating granulomas.
TREATMENT AND COURSE: The findings indicated necrotizing sarcoid granulomatosis.

Nodular opacities are a well-known pulmonary manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), occurring most often in seropositive men who smoke and have subcutaneous nodules. In the past 15 years two cases of lung carcinoma presenting as pulmonary nodules have been reported in patients with rheumatoid disease. We present seven patients with seropositive RA and subcutaneous nodules who had new pulmonary nodule(s) noted on chest roentgenograms. All but one were current smokers. Carcinoma was found in all patients at bronchoscopy or thoracotomy. Four patients had solitary nodules (one was cavitary);

A 55-year-old female patient was found to have a pulmonary nodule combined with multiple lung cysts detected on CT scan. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lobectomy was performed and the nodule showed adenocarcinoma while the whole left upper lobe showed a heavy deposition of amyloid. Syphilis infection was detected and was suspected contributing to secondary pulmonary amyloidosis. Although very rare, pulmonary amyloidosis should be added to the differential diagnosis for solid pulmonary nodules. Furthermore, widespread lung cysts located apart from pulmonary nodules is especially ra

Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic inflammatory disease characterized by destructive synovitis and systemic extra-articular involvement exemplified by rheumatoid nodules occurring in the skin, lungs, and other parenchymatous organs. Antirheumatic drugs like methotrexate and leflunomide are known to predispose to the development of pulmonary rheumatoid nodules. We report the case of a 60-year-old male with rheumatoid arthritis previously treated with methotrexate and cyclosporin, in whom multiple pulmonary nodules were disclosed. The patient was extensively diagnosed to exclude any malignancy.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare inherited disorder of vascular endothelium that can result in the formation of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (pAVMs). We observed that small pulmonary nodules, possibly representing early vascular malformations, are more common in these children than in the general population.
OBJECTIVE: To describe and characterize the small pulmonary nodules seen on chest CT examination in the lungs of children with HHT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We followed 19 children who had undergone chest CT as part of their initial diagnostic eval

CT radiomics-based machine learning has potential to predict lung cancer in pulmonary nodules (PNs) earlier than standard-of-care methods. Low malignancy rates in early-development PNs and variable image acquisition hinder development of radiomic models for diagnosing these PNs. To address these challenges, we augmented training using later-development PNs and harmonized for acquisition effects. We examine early-development benign and malignant PNs (n = 106) below the sensitivity of standard-of-care diagnosis. Classifiers predicting malignancy performed near chance when trained on ComBat-harmo

Pulmonary nodules are commonly evaluated using the CT-guided transthoracic biopsy; however, it is highly dependent on operator skill and can be associated with extended procedure duration and increased radiation exposure. Although robotic-assisted systems are intended to enhance procedural precision, there is limited comparative evidence against conventional techniques. Accordingly, this systematic review and meta‑analysis was conducted to compare robotic-assisted biopsy with conventional CT-guided transthoracic biopsy. We systematically searched Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, CNKI, and the C

For thoracoscopic resection to be successful, accurate preoperative and intraoperative localization is necessary due to the growing detection of small, non-palpable lung nodules using low-dose CT scanning. Accurate localization is required rather than optional in robot-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) since the total lack of tactile feedback makes it extremely difficult to identify deep, tiny, and subsolid nodules. With a focus on RATS-specific criteria, this study offers a modern, clinically focused framework for technique selection. This is a narrative review of the current literature. A str

The growing use of computed tomography (CT) in clinical practice has led to an increase in incidental pulmonary findings, with nodules being among the most commonly encountered. Managing these nodules remains a significant challenge in clinical radiology. In addition to nodules, interstitial lung abnormalities (ILAs) have emerged as a newly defined entity, necessitating recognition to prevent underestimation and misinterpretation, as well as to guide appropriate management. This review aims to examine the interpretation of incidental pulmonary nodules, providing clarity on their management and
