BACKGROUND: Extreme weather events, or natural disasters, present a large and increasing threat to human health, infrastructure and food security, including in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where the burden of undernutrition is high. However, research about associations between natural disasters and undernutrition in early childhood is limited.
METHODS: We combined anthropometric data of children aged 0-59 months from 51 Demographic and Health Surveys datasets collected from 2010 to 2019 in 30 countries in SSA with information on natural disaster events (flood, drought, other) from the Emergency

The archipelago of Puerto Rico has faced multiple natural disasters, including hurricanes and earthquakes, disrupting the mental health and daily lives of its residents. These disasters, combined with socio-political abandonment, have led to the deterioration of the electrical grid, exacerbating health disparities. This study aimed to explore the linkages between natural and structural disasters, mental health, and energy independence in Puerto Rico. In this setting, the community organization Casa Pueblo has installed solar panels in the homes of people with chronic health conditions. Through

Natural disasters are large-scale catastrophic events that seriously disrupt the functioning of a community or society. The frequency and severity of disasters are increasing and involve widespread human, material, economic, or environmental impacts that exceed the ability of the society affected by them to cope using its resources. In addition, disasters significantly affect the physical, emotional, and psychological health of individuals and cause numerous deaths, injuries, and economic losses. One of the most vulnerable groups to the negative effects of disasters is the elderly. The increas

Nepal faces many natural hazards, including floods, landslides, earthquakes, and extreme weather, which severely impact infrastructure, public health, and community resilience. In 2025, we conducted a formative stakeholder and community engagement exercise to inform research on strengthening local preparedness. This included consultative meetings with national agencies, local government, and community members in two hazard-affected municipalities. Field notes from the meetings were thematically analysed to identify priority themes. Findings indicated that national legal and policy frameworks e

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of disaster trauma, disaster conflict, and economic loss on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and to verify the moderating effect of personal and community resilience in these relationships. The data of 1914 people, aged 20 or above, who had experienced natural disasters (earthquake, typhoon, flooding) were used.
METHODS: Hayes's (2013) PROCESS macro (Model 1) was conducted to verify the moderation effect of personal and community resilience between PTSD and disaster trauma, disaster conflict, and economic loss.
RESULTS: Disaster tra

Hurricane Maria was a disastrous weather event that devastated Puerto Rico (PR) in September 2017. Yet, little is known about people's perceptions of this event. In this investigation, we offer insight about Hurricane Maria's impact on PR's inhabitants. More specifically, we study a sample (n = 542 responses) of individuals' worry levels through four time points during the aftermath of Hurricane Maria: their variation through time, their relationship to decision making, and if and how certain demographic variables may influence them. For these purposes, we designed and implemented the Individu

The geographical location of any region, as well as large-scale environmental changes caused by a variety of factors, invite a wide range of disasters. Floods, droughts, earthquakes, cyclones, landslides, tornadoes, and cloudbursts are all common natural disasters that destroy property and kill people. On average, 0.1% of the total deaths globally in the past decade have been due to natural disasters. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), a branch of the Ministry of Home Affairs, plays an important role in disaster management in India by taking responsibility for risk mitigation,

This study explores disaster responses across the United States for Winter Storm Jaxon in 2018 by utilizing demographic and sentiment analysis for Twitter®. This study finds that people show highly fluctuated responses across the study periods and highest natural sentiment, followed by positive sentiment and negative sentiment. Also, some sociodemographic and Twitter variables, such as gender and long text, are strongly related to human sentiment, whereas other sociodemographic and Twitter variables, such as age and the higher number of retweets, are not associated with it. The results show th

OBJECTIVE: To assess global, regional and national trends in the impact of floods from 1990 to 2022 and determine factors influencing flood-related deaths.
METHODS: We used data on flood disasters from the International Disaster Database for 1990-2022 from 168 countries. We calculated the annual percentage change to estimate trends in the rates of people affected and killed by floods by study period, World Health Organization (WHO) region, country income level and flood type. We used multivariable logistic regression analysis to assess the factors associated with death from floods.

Maladaptive behaviors during a disaster refer to actions that do not benefit the individual or society. Quarantelli highlights several maladaptive behaviors myths associated with disasters: widespread antisocial behavior, passivity, role conflict or abandonment, and sudden widespread mental health breakdowns (1). Despite early work reporting these myths, the common perception is that maladaptive behaviors such as rioting, looting, panic, and criminal conduct are prevalent in the wake of disasters. This is despite research by de Ville de Goyet and Arnold which has called on public officials and

Understanding and reducing the risk of natural disasters is crucial for maintaining the economy and society. Since Japan is a disaster-prone country and the most advanced nation in the world regarding aging and population decline, it necessitates a natural disaster risk analysis that considers both challenges. This paper represents the first study to explore the risk of natural disasters, specifically for young females exposed to four types of events: floods, tsunamis, storm surges, and sediment disasters, particularly in municipalities at risk of vanishing. We identified municipalities with a

We have not seen the last of natural disasters; nor have we endured the last of the terrorist acts. This article offers clinical guidance in providing mental health services to families in the aftermath of such events. The trauma experienced by an individual victimized by a natural disaster or terror attack reverberates through an entire family. Although based in established clinical practice, intervention with survivors of disasters is a different process from other treatments. A case illustrates the key principles and central methods of family therapy with a traumatized family.

Disasters from all hazards, ranging from natural disasters, human-induced disasters, effects of climate change to social conflicts can significantly affect the healthcare system and community. This requires a paradigm shift from a reactive approach to a disaster risk management 'all-hazards' approach. Disaster management is a joint effort of the city, state, regional, national, multi-agencies and international organisations that requires effective communication, collaboration and coordination. This paper offers lessons learned and best practices, which, when taken into consideration, can stren

Natural and man-made disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, plane crashes, high-rise building collapses, major nuclear facility malfunctions, pose an ever-present challenge to public emergency services. Disasters may result in a large volume of responders arriving on-scene to provide assistance to victims. Coordination of responding resources is a major problem in disasters. In this paper we introduce a decision support framework built on rapid information collection and resource tracking functionalities. Based on this information collected from emergency response service agencies, operation

Floods are the most common natural disaster occurring worldwide, with their impact expected to grow in the future due to the effects of climate change and population shift. Floodwaters pose immediate dangers to human health, but also long-term effects resulting from displacement and worsened living conditions. This review examines the health impact of flood disasters, including skin and soft-tissue infections, gastroenteritis, and zoonotic infections such as leptospirosis, and the impact on noncommunicable diseases and health infrastructure. Further work in the development of cost-efficient pr
