Impact of optic nerve sheath diameter variations on respiratory mechanics in ventilated traumatic brain injury patients: A pilot prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients, elevated intracranial pressure leading to brain-lung interactions is well described. This study aimed to find the association between the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) variations and respiratory mechanics, that is, static lung compliance (Cstat), and driving pressure (DP) in TBI patients. The secondary objectives were to observe the association between ONSD and lung ultrasound score (LUS), arterial partial pressure of oxygen and fraction of inspired oxygen ratio (PaO2/FiO2), and clinical pulmonary infection score (CPIS). Perspective and consideration in the application of personalized reference intervals based on biological variation: a four-month observation of a woman with SARS-CoV-2 reinfection.

This study aimed to investigate potential benefit of personalized reference intervals (prRIs) by conducting a four-month observation of a woman with SARS-CoV-2 reinfection. Two types of prRIs were calculated: one derived from the population biological variation (BV) data provided by the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) biological variation database (prRIs_pop.), and the other derived from individual variation data (prRIs_ind.). These were subsequently compared. A total of 110 test results encompassing complete blood count (CBC) and leukocyte differential

Variations of PM2.5-bound elements and their associated effects during long-distance transport of dust storms: Insights from multi-sites observations.

Dust storms are a significant concern because of their adverse effects on ambient air quality and human health. To investigate the evolution of dust storms during long-distance transport and its impacts on air quality and human health risks in cities along the transport pathway, we monitored the major fraction of dust (i.e., particle-bound elements) online in four cities in northern China during March 2021. Three dust events originating from the Gobi Desert of North China and Mongolia and the Taklimakan Desert of Northwest China were captured. We investigated the source regions of dust storms

Variation of treatment decision-making for laryngeal cancer in Japan a retrospective observational study using a claim- and electronic medical record-based database.

BACKGROUND: Primary curative treatment of resectable laryngeal cancer includes surgery and chemoradiotherapy. Other treatment options include radiotherapy, chemoradiotherapy, partial laryngectomy, and total laryngectomy. Larynx-preserving treatments (partial laryngectomy, radiotherapy, and chemoradiotherapy) are recommended in early stage cases, although total laryngectomy is needed in advanced cases. Here, we evaluated trends in treatment strategies and identified the factors that are important in decision making. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of data acquired from electroni

n-3 Fatty acid erythrocyte membrane content, APOE varepsilon4, and cognitive variation: an observational follow-up study in late adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Evidence for an inverse relation between dietary intake of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and age-related cognitive decline is inconsistent. This inconsistency may arise because the relation is present only in the absence of the apolipoprotein E epsilon4 (APOE epsilon4) allele. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the contribution of erythrocyte n-3 PUFA content to cognitive aging in the presence or absence of the APOE epsilon4 allele. DESIGN: We followed up 120 volunteers, born in 1936, at approximate ages of 64, 66, and 68 y. Their intelligence quotient at 11 y old was ava

Stage-dependent effects of ethanol on cranial neural crest cell development: partial basis for the phenotypic variations observed in fetal alcohol syndrome.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is characterized by growth retardation, mental deficiencies, and numerous craniofacial and neuronal anomalies; the type and severity of these defects may be related to the time and dose of maternal ethanol exposure. Ethanol administered during presomitic stages results in the typical FAS craniofacial phenotype and is accompanied by a loss of cranial neural crest cells (CNCCs) through ethanol-induced cell death. However, the stage-specific effects of ethanol on the CNCC population is unknown. We examined the effects of ethanol on CNCC populations by treating in ovo

Chromosome 18 aneuploidy: anatomical variations observed in cases of full and mosaic trisomy 18 and a case of deletion of the short arm of chromosome 18.

Cases of full and mosaic trisomy 18 and a body of an infant with the 18p-syndrome were dissected in detail to compare the anatomical variations associated with these 3 chromosome imbalances involving autosome 18. The types and numbers of morphologic variations present in both the full and mosaic trisomy 18 bodies were similar to the types and numbers of variations seen in all other cases of full trisomy 18 that have been studied by gross dissection. Apart from an atrial septal defect, the body of the infant with the 18p- imbalance showed only 2 striking defects: 1) deficiencies of the levator

Variations in central venous oxygen saturation and central venous-to-arterial carbon dioxide tension difference to define fluid responsiveness: a prospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Fluid-induced variations in central venous oxygen saturation (ΔScvO2) and central venous-to-arterial carbon dioxide tension difference [ΔP(cv-a)CO2] have been proposed to define fluid responsiveness. This study aimed to determine whether their diagnostic accuracies are affected by baseline values or oxygen consumption (VO2) responsiveness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective observational study enrolled mechanically ventilated patients with circulatory shock. Hemodynamic variables and blood gas analysis were measured before and after a fluid challenge. Fluid responsiveness a

Age-related variation in the association between intraoperative dynamic cerebral autoregulation impairment proportion and postoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio: an exploratory observational study.

BACKGROUND: Dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA) impairment during surgery has been associated with adverse neurologic outcomes. Whether the burden of impaired dCA is related to the postoperative peripheral inflammatory response, and whether this association varies with age, remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether age modifies the association between intraoperative dCA impairment proportion and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio on postoperative day 3 (NLR3). METHODS: This single-center exploratory observational study included 57 adults undergoing elective major abdominal surgery.

Passive leg raising-induced changes in pulse pressure variation to assess fluid responsiveness in mechanically ventilated patients: a multicentre prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Passive leg raising-induced changes in cardiac index can be used to predict fluid responsiveness. We investigated whether passive leg raising-induced changes in pulse pressure variation (ΔPPVPLR) can also predict fluid responsiveness in mechanically ventilated patients. METHODS: In this multicentre prospective observational study, we included 270 critically ill patients on mechanical ventilation in whom volume expansion was indicated because of acute circulatory failure. We did not include patients with cardiac arrythmias. Cardiac index and PPV were measured before/during a passiv

In Vitro Studies Show that Sequence Variability Contributes to Marked Variation in Hepatitis B Virus Replication, Protein Expression, and Function Observed across Genotypes.

UNLABELLED: The hepatitis B virus (HBV) exists as 9 major genotypes (A to I), one minor strain (designated J) and multiple subtypes. Marked differences in HBV natural history, disease progression and treatment response are exhibited by many of these genotypes and subtypes. For example, HBV genotype C is associated with later hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) seroconversion and high rates of liver cancer compared to other HBV genotypes, whereas genotype A2 is rarely associated with HBeAg-negative disease or liver cancer. The reasons for these and other differences in HBV natural history are yet to

Genetic variation observed at three tetrameric short tandem repeat loci HumTHO1, TPOX, and CSF1PO--in five ethnic population groups of northeastern India.

This paper portrays the genetic variation observed at three tetrameric short tandem repeat (STR) loci HumTHO1, TPOX, and CSF1PO in five ethnic population groups from northeastern India. The study also specifies the suitability of use of these markers for forensic testing. The populations studied included three tribal groups (Kuki, Naga and Hmar), one Mongoloid caste group (Meitei), and a religious caste group (Manipuri Muslims). The loci were highly polymorphic in the populations, and all loci met Hardy-Weinberg expectations. No evidence for association of alleles among the loci was detected.
