[Wood chip alveolitis].

A 52 year old farmer was referred to us for investigation of suspected farmer's lung. For many years the farmer had been exposed to hay, straw, pigeons, and fuel chip dust. Under exertion he suffered from shortness of breath. In the farmer's own fuel chips we could identify Aspergillus fumigatus, Paecilomyces species and Mucor species. In the farmer's blood we found IgG-antibodies against his own fuel chips, thermophilic actinomycetes, Penicillium species, Mucor species and Aspergillus fumigatus. We did not detect any IgG-antibodies against pigeon serum or pigeon faeces. In order to determine

A synergistic alliance between nematophagous fungi and organic matter against plant-parasitic nematodes: a systematic review.

Nematophagous fungi (NF) are essential biological control agents for managing plant-parasitic nematode (PPN) populations, which cause significant global crop losses. Through its effects on soil microbial activity and physicochemical properties, soil organic matter (OM) improves NF survival, colonisation, and functioning. This systematic review critically synthesised evidence on the potential synergistic interaction between NF and OM (i.e., enhanced nematode suppression when applied together compared to individually) for sustainable nematode suppression. Using PRISMA guidelines, studies were sy

In vitro and in vivo antitrypanosomal activities of three peptide antibiotics: leucinostatin A and B, alamethicin I and tsushimycin.

In the course of our screening for antitrypanosomal compounds from soil microorganisms, as well as from the antibiotics library of the Kitasato Institute for Life Sciences, we found three peptide antibiotics, leucinostatin (A and B), alamethicin I and tsushimycin, which exhibited potent or moderate antitrypanosomal activity. We report here the in vitro and in vivo antitrypanosomal properties and cytotoxicities of leucinostatin A and B, alamethicin I and tsushimycin compared with suramin. We also discuss their possible mode of action. This is the first report of in vitro and in vivo trypanocida

Cordyceps cicadae polysaccharides ameliorate ulcerative colitis by modulating the gut microbiota and regulating the bile acid/FXR/NF-κB signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory bowel disease, closely linked to dysbiosis of the intestinal microbiota and abnormal bile acid homeostasis. Polysaccharides derived from Paecilomyces cicadae (CCP) exhibit immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. However, their therapeutic potential and underlying mechanisms in UC remain poorly elucidated. PURPOSE: This research seeks to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of CCP in the treatment of UC and utilizing the "microbiota-bile acid metabolism-immunity" axis, elucidates the mechanisms by which CCP enhances

Purpureocillium lilacinum tattoo-related skin infection in a kidney transplant recipient.

Purpureocillium lilacinum is an emerging pathogenic mold among immunocompromised hosts that causes cutaneous infections related to skin breakdown. We present the first reported case of P. lilacinum tattoo-related skin infection, to our knowledge. A kidney transplant recipient recently treated for acute cellular rejection presented with skin papules overlying a tattoo. Diagnosis was confirmed on culture, histology, and 18S ribosomal RNA polymerase chain reaction. The morphological features on culture characteristic of P. lilacinum included violet colonies on malt extract agar, long tapering bru

From chaos to tranquillity: a modern approach to the identification, nomenclature and phylogeny of Aspergillus, Penicillium and other Eurotiales, including an updated accepted species list.

Eurotiales is a diverse and speciose order and includes economically important genera like Aspergillus, Penicillium, Paecilomyces and Talaromyces. Historically, species identifications based on morphology are challenging. The publication of accepted species lists and the availability of representative DNA sequences for type strains have contributed greatly towards accurate species identification and facilitated the description of many new species. However, despite current advancements, a proportion of newly described species within these taxonomically challenging genera represent, in fact, exi

[Rasamsonia argillacea in Patient with Immunodeficiency: First Suspected Case in Türkiye].

Rasamsonia species are thermophilic fungi that primarily cause infection in immunocompromised patients. R.argillacea species complex is frequently misidentified as a pathogen due to its morphological similarity to the genera Penicillium and Paecilomyces and its incidence remains undetermined. This situation further complicates the process of timely diagnosis and treatment. Rasamsonia species can be identified using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence analysis, which is considered the primary fungal barcode. Accurate species identification is imperative for the administration of appropri

A review on clinical cases of rare mold infections and their antifungal treatment strategies.

In recent years, with the growing population of immunocompromised individuals, infections caused by rare environmental molds have become increasingly prevalent and clinically significant. Due to frequent misdiagnosis and difficult clinical management, the overall disease burden of such infections poses a major challenge in clinical practice. This article aims to fill the knowledge gap by reviewing cases of rare mold infections from January 2020 to February 2026, analyzing the susceptible populations, identification techniques, antifungal susceptibility testing, and antifungal treatment strateg

Clinical Manifestations of Human Exposure to Fungi.

Biological particles, along with inorganic gaseous and particulate pollutants, constitute an ever-present component of the atmosphere and surfaces. Among these particles are fungal species colonizing almost all ecosystems, including the human body. Although inoffensive to most people, fungi can be responsible for several health problems, such as allergic fungal diseases and fungal infections. Worldwide fungal disease incidence is increasing, with new emerging fungal diseases appearing yearly. Reasons for this increase are the expansion of life expectancy, the number of immunocompromised patien

Therapeutic Potential of Chlorogenic Acid in Chemoresistance and Chemoprotection in Cancer Treatment.

Chemotherapeutic drugs are indispensable in cancer treatment, but their effectiveness is often lessened because of non-selective toxicity to healthy tissues, which triggers inflammatory pathways that are harmful to vital organs. In addition, tumors' resistance to drugs causes failures in treatment. Chlorogenic acid (5-caffeoylquinic acid, CGA), found in plants and vegetables, is promising in anticancer mechanisms. In vitro and animal studies have indicated that CGA can overcome resistance to conventional chemotherapeutics and alleviate chemotherapy-induced toxicity by scavenging free radicals
