PURPOSE: To evaluate the refractive changes after congenital cataract surgery in persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) vs. non-PFV eyes.
METHODS: Retrospective study of 75 eyes with PFV or non-PFV congenital cataract, who underwent surgery before age 7 months (unilateral/first operated eye), during 2007-2018 at a tertiary referral center, with follow-up ≥ one-year.
RESULTS: 27 eyes (36%) had PFV, 48 were non-PFV cataracts. Mean age (± SD) at surgery in children with PFV was 2.24 ± 1.23 months and 2.44 ± 1.51 months in the non-PFV group. Mean post-operative follow-up was 64.94 ± 34.67 months. 60

PURPOSE: Distinguishing posterior persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) from retinal detachment (RD) may be very challenging clinically and ultrasonographically, as they share common morphological features. However, it is crucial, considering their substantially distinct management and treatment. We aimed to assess the relevance of quantitative colour Doppler flow imaging to distinguish PFV from RD in children.
METHODS: This retrospective bi-centre study included 66 children (30 females and 36 males, mean age: 244 ± 257 days) with a clinically suspected diagnosis of RD or posterior PFV. All chil

Persistent fetal vasculature and fundal coloboma are important congenital vitreoretinal disorders that can severely affect a child's visual acuity. Each disorder has its own set of potential complications. We discuss the case of a visually challenged child who presented with a combination of both these disorders, along with inferior lens subluxation.

BACKGROUND: The Infant Aphakia Treatment Study is a randomized trial that compares the treatment of unilateral congenital cataract with primary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation versus aphakic contact lens (CLs). The purpose of this study was to compare the outcomes for infants with lens opacity associated with persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) to those without.
METHODS: Retrospective subgroup analysis of grating visual acuity at 1 year of age and adverse events up to 1 year after surgery in eyes identified intraoperatively as having evidence of mild PFV from the IATS.
RESULTS: Of 83 infa

Persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) refers to a spectrum of developmental ocular anomalies due to incomplete regression of embryonic vasculature. PFV may present with a wide range of manifestations and visual consequences. We report a rare manifestation of PFV wherein an exudative choroidal neovascular membrane formed in association with the posterior origin of the fibrovascular stalk. While most PFV stalks arise from the optic disc, the stalk in this case originated away from the disc in the inferonasal peripapillary area and had not undergone surgical transection. The patient was treated with

Mono- and bi-allelic mutations in the low-density lipoprotein receptor related protein 5 (LRP5) may cause osteopetrosis, autosomal dominant and recessive exudative vitreoretinopathy, juvenile osteoporosis, or persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV). We report on a child affected with PHPV and carrying compound mutations. The father carried the splice mutation and suffered from severe bone fragility since childhood. The mother carried the missense mutation without any clinical manifestations. The genetic diagnosis of their child allowed for appropriate treatment in the father and for th
