"My Friend with HIV Remains a Friend": HIV/AIDS Stigma Reduction through Education in Secondary Schools-A Pilot Project in Buea, Cameroon.

The universal access to treatment and care for people living with HIV (PLWHIV) is still a major problem, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, where 70% of HIV-infected people live. Equally important is the fact that HIV/AIDS-related stigma is recognized to be a major obstacle to successfully control the spread of this disease. We devised a pilot project (titled "My friend with HIV remains a friend") to fight the HIV/AIDS stigmatization through educating secondary school students by openly HIV-positive teachers. In a first step, we have measured the amount and type of stigma felt by the PLWHIV in

Dorchester Lead-Safe Yard project: a pilot program to demonstrate low-cost, on-site techniques to reduce exposure to lead-contaminated soil.

Despite a general reduction in blood lead levels in children after lead was banned in gasoline and paint, lead poisoning remains an important health problem in many older urban areas. One factor that increases risk in these places is the high levels of lead in certain residential areas. A major intervention study found that reducing lead levels in urban soils results in a reduction in exposed children's blood lead levels. Removing lead from inner-city soils or reducing exposures to lead-contaminated soils typically is expensive, technologically challenging, or beyond the ability of low-income

Feasibility of integrated transcranial doppler ultrasound-near-infrared spectroscopy to measure cerebral haemodynamics in dementia, delirium, and depression (the VESPAR Project): A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) are indirect measures of neurovascular coupling (NVC). No studies have assessed the feasibility of an integrated TCD-NIRS approach to measure NVC in patients with dementia, delirium, and depression. NEW METHOD: TCD-NIRS was trialled in 10 healthy volunteers, 11 patients with depression, 8 with dementia, and 5 with delirium. Participants underwent continuous cerebral blood velocity measurements, measured from the dominant middle cerebral artery (MCAv) and non-dominant posterior cerebral artery (PCAv),

Single-Site Teaching Kitchen Project Increases Confidence for Dietary Interventions Aimed at Prevention of Kidney Stones in Known Stone Formers: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE(S): Patterns of dietary intake are known risk factors for both kidney stone formation and recurrence. Dietary recommendations such as the Dietary Approaches To Stop Hypertension diet can reduce risk, but patients may lack knowledge or a practical understanding on implementing these diet patterns. Virtual teaching kitchens have proven effective in improving dietary practices in other populations, but have not been applied to patients with kidney stones. This study assessed the effectiveness of virtual teaching kitchen sessions in enhancing dietary confidence and practices for kidney s

Long-Term Outcome of Neonates and Infants whose Mothers Tested Positive for SARS-CoV-2 during Pregnancy - a Pilot of the Post-CRONOS Project.

OBJECTIVE: Long-term effects on infants of mothers with SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy are increasingly discussed in the literature. Besides potential neurodevelopment impairments after intrauterine SARS-CoV-2 exposure, there might be differences in the postnatal pediatric care of those children, like the timing of preventive medical examinations (PME) or vaccinations. In this first national long-term follow-up study of women included in the CRONOS registry, we describe maternal impressions of their child´s development and the prevalence of regulatory disorders, and we analyze the timin

Bridge Healing: A Pilot Project of a New Model to Prevent Repeat "Social Admit" Visits to the Emergency Department and Help Break the Cycle of Homelessness in Canada.

Homelessness continues to be a pervasive public health problem throughout Canada. Hospital Emergency Departments (EDs) and inpatient wards have become a source of temporary care and shelter for homeless patients. Upon leaving the hospital, homeless patients are not more equipped than before to find permanent housing. The Bridge Healing program in Edmonton, Alberta, has emerged as a novel approach to addressing homelessness by providing transitional housing for those relying on repeated visits to the ED. This paper describes the three essential components to the Bridge Healing model: partnershi

The Women@Heart NS Pilot Project: Rationale and Design of a Community-Based Peer Support Program for Women Living With Heart Disease in Nova Scotia.

Cardiac rehabilitation is associated with lower mortality and improved psychosocial outcomes. However, disparities exist in referral and access to cardiac rehabilitation for Nova Scotian women, a situation exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Women@Heart (W@H) is a 4-month community-based peer support program developed and validated by the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, for women living with heart disease. The program aims to empower women with coping strategies, provide a supportive learning environment, and establish volunteer advocacy groups. The primary objective of this study is t

Pilot project for a recovery-oriented, DBT-informed skill-building education course for families of adults with borderline personality, bipolar or major depressive disorders.

There are a variety of educational interventions for families who have a relative with a mental health disorder. However, for those with one or more emotion dysregulation disorders, there are limited options. This article reports on the results of a pilot project using a quasi-experimental design with a sample of 270 (intervention = 217, control = 53) to assess an intervention, Getting Off the Emotional Roller Coaster Skill-Building Family Education Course (GOER Family Course), for families coping with and managing emotion regulation disorders in a loved one which are often misdiagnosed or co-

Accuracy and usefulness of ICD-10 death certificate coding for the identification of patients with ALS: results from the South Carolina ALS Surveillance Pilot Project.

The purpose if this study was to investigate the positive predictive value and sensitivity of the ICD-10 code G12.2, which is used to identify patients who have possibly died from ALS. All patients with a motor neuron disease diagnosis code during the study period (2001-2005) were identified using administrative data. South Carolina death certificate data were used to assess the positive predictive value and sensitivity of the ICD-10 code G12.2. Two hundred and seventy known cases of ALS linked to the death certificate data file. G12.2 was coded as either the underlying or contributing cause o

Evaluation of GPT-5 for Esophageal Cancer Staging Using Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography Maximum-Intensity Projection Images: Comparative Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate esophageal cancer staging relies on 18F fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F FDG-PET), but its interpretation is complex and time-intensive. This diagnostic burden is exacerbated by significant workforce shortages in both radiology and surgery, thus necessitating automated support systems. The emergence of advanced large language models (LLMs) has raised expectations for their potential to fulfill this role in complex medical tasks. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of LLMs for staging esophageal cancer using 18F FDG-PET images, with a focus

"The Women's PrEP Project," a Clinic-Based, Socio-Structural Intervention to Improve the Provision of Preexposure Prophylaxis for Cisgender Women: Interrupted Time Series Pilot.

BACKGROUND: Cisgender women account for 23% of new HIV diagnoses in the United States, but there are significant socio-structural barriers to engagement and retention in the preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) cascade, particularly for women of color. OBJECTIVE: In response to the lack of evidence-based interventions to improve PrEP initiation, adherence, and persistence among women in the United States, we developed and piloted a clinic-based, socio-structural intervention to measure (1) the feasibility of delivering the adapted intervention and (2) clinic team and patient perspectives on the int

Unlocking Trust in Community Health Systems: Lessons From the Lymphatic Filariasis Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention Pilot Project in Luangwa District, Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Surgery for hydrocele is commonly promoted as part of morbidity management and disability prevention (MMDP) services for lymphatic filariasis (LF). However, uptake of these surgeries has been suboptimal owing to several community level barriers that have triggered mistrust in such services. This study aimed at documenting mechanisms of unlocking trust in community health systems (CHSs) in the context of a LF hydrocele management project that was implemented in Luangwa District, Zambia. METHODS: Qualitative data was collected through in-depth interviews (IDIs) and focus group discu
