Meloxicam and risk of myocardial infarction: a population-based nested case-control study.

Certain non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction (MI), a risk linked to cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibition. There are limited studies assessing the risk of MI associated with meloxicam, an increasingly popular drug with COX-2 inhibiting properties. A nested matched case-control study using The Health Improvement Network, a UK population-based database was conducted. NSAID users between 35 and 89 years of age with at least 1 year enrollment in the cohort were included. Incident MI cases were matched on age, sex, practice and e

Association between immigrant background and ADHD: a nationwide population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Information about psychiatric disorders among those with immigrant parents is important for early detection and service development. The aim of this study is to examine the association between parental immigration and the diagnosis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in offspring in Finland. METHODS: This matched case-control study was based on a national birth cohort. The sample included all singletons who were born in Finland in 1991-2005 and diagnosed with ADHD by the year 2011 (n = 10,409) and their matched controls (n = 39,124). Nationwide registers were used t

Periconceptional risk factors of spina bifida among Egyptian population: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: To study the preconceptual & early conceptional risk factors predisposing to the development of spina bifida (SB) among Egyptian population. STUDY DESIGN: The study involved 197 pregnant women undergoing fetal anatomy scan; 97 women proved to have fetal SB and 100 women with normal fetuses as a control group. The control group was recruited randomly in the same period from patients undergoing anatomical scan. Risk factors that might lead to SB were investigated including maternal age, gravidity, parity, residence, history of diabetes mellitus or drug intake, smoking, infections, ex

Assessing different measures of population-level vaccine protection using a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Case-control studies have not been examined for their utility in assessing population-level vaccine protection in individually randomized trials. METHODS: We used the data of a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of a cholera vaccine to compare the results of case-control analyses with those of cohort analyses. Cases of cholera were selected from the trial population followed for three years following dosing. For each case, we selected 4 age-matched controls who had not developed cholera. For each case and control, GIS was used to calculate vaccine coverage of individuals in a su

Costs analysis of a population level rabies control programme in Tamil Nadu, India.

The study aimed to determine costs to the state government of implementing different interventions for controlling rabies among the entire human and animal populations of Tamil Nadu. This built upon an earlier assessment of Tamil Nadu's efforts to control rabies. Anti-rabies vaccines were made available at all health facilities. Costs were estimated for five different combinations of animal and human interventions using an activity-based costing approach from the provider perspective. Disease and population data were sourced from the state surveillance data, human census and livestock census.

Proton pump inhibitors and hospitalization with hypomagnesemia: a population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Some evidence suggests that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are an under-appreciated risk factor for hypomagnesemia. Whether hospitalization with hypomagnesemia is associated with use of PPIs is unknown. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a population-based case-control study of multiple health care databases in Ontario, Canada, from April 2002 to March 2012. Patients who were enrolled as cases were Ontarians aged 66 years or older hospitalized with hypomagnesemia. For each individual enrolled as a case, we identified up to four individuals as controls matched on age, sex, kidney di

Extreme neonatal hyperbilirubinemia and a specific genotype: a population-based case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: Extreme hyperbilirubinemia (plasma bilirubin ≥ 24.5 mg/dL) is an important risk factor for severe bilirubin encephalopathy. Several risk factors for hyperbilirubinemia are known, but in a large number of patients, a causal factor is never established. UGT1A1 is the rate-limiting enzyme in bilirubin's metabolism. The genotype of Gilbert syndrome, the UGT1A1*28 allele, causes markedly reduced activity of this enzyme, but its association with neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is uncertain and its relationship with extreme hyperbilirubinemia has not been studied. We examined whether the UGT1

Evidence-based control of canine rabies: a critical review of population density reduction.

Control measures for canine rabies include vaccination and reducing population density through culling or sterilization. Despite the evidence that culling fails to control canine rabies, efforts to reduce canine population density continue in many parts of the world. The rationale for reducing population density is that rabies transmission is density-dependent, with disease incidence increasing directly with host density. This may be based, in part, on an incomplete interpretation of historical field data for wildlife, with important implications for disease control in dog populations. Here, w

Association between viral hepatitis and erectile dysfunction: a population-based case-control analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic liver diseases are often accompanied by hypogonadism, testicular atrophy, and a reduction in libido, all of which are factors that may contribute to the development of erectile dysfunction (ED). However, large-scaled studies investigating the association between ED and viral hepatitis are still sparse. AIM: This study aimed to estimate the association between ED and a prior diagnosis of viral hepatitis using a population-based dataset with a case-control design in Taiwan. METHODS: We identified 6,429 patients with ED as cases and randomly selected 32,145 subjects as con

A population-based case-control study of extreme summer temperature and birth defects.

BACKGROUND: Although hyperthermia is a recognized animal teratogen and maternal fever has been associated with birth defects in humans, data on the relationship between high environmental temperatures and birth defects are limited. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether pregnancies are potentially vulnerable to the weather extremes anticipated with climate change, we evaluated the relationship between extreme summer temperature and the occurrence of birth defects. METHODS: We performed a population-based case-control study by linking the New York State Congenital Malformations Registry to birth cer

Neural autoantibody evaluation in functional gastrointestinal disorders: a population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Our goal is to investigate the serum profile of neural autoantibodies in community-based patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or functional dyspepsia. The pathogenesis of functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, including IBS and dyspepsia, are unknown. Theories range from purely psychological to autoimmune alterations in GI tract neuromuscular function. METHODS: The study subjects, based in Olmsted County, MN, reported symptoms of functional dyspepsia or IBS (n = 69), or were asymptomatic controls (n = 64). Their coded sera were screened for antibodies targeting neuron

The P300 event-related potential and smoking--a population-based case-control study.

A better understanding of the factors underlying habitual tobacco smoking may further new strategies to go about this major health problem. The P300 event-related potential (ERP) has emerged as a valuable (endo)phenotype in neuropsychiatric research. Previous studies suggested the P300 ERP to be reduced in smokers. The main purpose of the present study was to provide an in-depth description of smoking-related behavioral, biological and electrophysiological phenotypes with an emphasis on the P300 ERP and its mutual relationship with other smoking-related parameters. In this case-control study N

Outdoor work and risk for Parkinson's disease: a population-based case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: Sunlight is the main contributor to vitamin D in humans. Since inadequate levels of vitamin D have been linked to increased risks for neurodegenerative diseases, we examined whether outdoor work is associated with a reduced risk for Parkinson's disease in a population-based case-control study of Danish men. METHODS: We identified 3819 men with a primary diagnosis of Parkinson's disease in the period 1995-2006 in the Danish National Hospital Register and selected 19,282 age- and sex-matched population controls at random from the Central Population Register. Association between tetracycline or doxycycline and hepatotoxicity: a population based case-control study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: An FDA Working Group, along with representatives of PhRMA and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, as well as the Institute of Medicine Report 'To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health Care System' have suggested that post-marketing drug surveillance is a important method to decrease adverse drug events. While tetracyclines are known to cause hepatotoxicity, no post-marketing drug surveillance studies have examined the risk of developing hepatotoxicity with tetracyclines. Therefore, the objective of this study is to determine the difference in ris

Vulvar vestibulitis and risk factors: a population-based case-control study in Oslo.

Vulvar vestibulitis is a major cause of entry dyspareunia in young women. The aim of this study was to evaluate a self-reported history of bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis, use of oral contraception and nulli-pregnancy as risk factors for vestibulitis. A retrospective examination of medical records was performed for 45 patients with vestibulitis from a vulvar clinic in Oslo, median age 24 years, age range 19-49 years. Four controls per case were selected randomly from the same Oslo source population as the cases. Age-matching was not performed, as matching does not control for confounding in t

Sarcoidosis and MIF gene polymorphism: a case-control study in an Irish population.

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor is a key pro-inflammatory mediator. A 5-CATT repeat functional polymorphism within the promoter of the gene was previously associated with the lowest promoter activity. It was hypothesised that patients exhibiting a 5-CATT allele would have a less aggressive inflammatory response with an associated less severe clinical phenotype in sarcoidosis. Irish Caucasian sarcoidosis patients (n = 173) followed up for 1-39 yrs and a control group (n = 166) were genotyped for the CATT repeat polymorphism. Disease severity at the time of diagnosis and at the time of el
