South Korean Nurses' Experiences with Patient Care at a COVID-19-Designated Hospital: Growth after the Frontline Battle against an Infectious Disease Pandemic.

COVID-19 is a respiratory disease caused by a novel coronavirus that quickly spread worldwide, resulting in a global pandemic. Healthcare professionals coming into close contact with COVID-19 patients experience mental health issues, including stress, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and burnout. This study aimed to explore the experiences of COVID-19-designated hospital nurses in South Korea who provided care for patients based on their lived experiences. Eighteen nurses working in a COVID-19-designated hospital completed in-depth individual telephone interviews between Ju

[Acute myelitis of an unusual cause in a child: the lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus].

UNLABELLED: Acute transverse myelitis is a rare disorder in childhood. It usually occurs as a post-infectious disease, but a precise infectious agent is identified in only 20% of cases. OBSERVATION: The diagnosis of acute transverse myelitis was made in a 5.5-year-old girl who initially presented with left Claude-Bernard-Horner syndrome and meningitis. A few days later, motor and sensory tetraparesia with bladder dysfunction was observed. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a diffuse lesion in the medulla, with a hypersignal in the T2 and a hyposignal in the T1 sequences. Serum analysis showed

Non Cystic Fibrosis Bronchiectasis.

Bronchiectasis is a pathological abnormality of the airways in which there is permanent dilatation and thickening of the airways. Precise incidence/prevalence in India is not known. Recent data suggests that about 1 % young children admitted in a hospital with pneumonia may develop bronchiectasis. Due to significant burden of pneumonia in young children in developing countries including India, it may be a significant problem that is possibly under recognized. Causes of bronchiectasis depend on the burden of respiratory infections and availability of the investigations for identification of the

NSUN2-Mediated m5C Methylation in Human Disease: Mechanism and Therapeutic Implications.

The epitranscriptomic landscape defined by reversible post-transcriptional RNA modifications constitutes a sophisticated layer of gene regulatory circuitry that modulates diverse biological processes. As an essential writer enzyme for RNA 5-methylcytosine (m5C), NOP2/Sun RNA methyltransferase 2 (NSUN2) catalyzes site-specific m5C deposition across an extensive repertoire of cellular transcripts spanning messenger RNAs, transfer RNAs and non-coding RNAs, and orchestrates core post-transcriptional events including transcript stabilization, nucleocytoplasmic trafficking, translational tuning and

Distinct subtypes of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders: CHIP-like mutations in early lesions and substantial mutational differences between EBV-positive and EBV-negative diffuse large B-cell lymphomas.

Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLD) and lymphomas in immunocompromised individuals represent significant clinical challenges, with a limited understanding of their pathogenesis. We investigated a PTLD cohort (n = 50) consisting of 'early lesions' (infectious mononucleosis-like PTLD, plasmacytic and follicular hyperplasias), polymorphic PTLD and post-transplant diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (PT-DLBCL). The study also included 15 DLBCL with autoimmune/immunocompromised backgrounds (IS-DLBCL) and 14 DLBCL, not otherwise specified (DLBCL, NOS), as control. To investigate microarc

Pediatric early-onset neuropsychiatric obsessive compulsive disorders.

At the time of this writing, most pediatricians or child psychiatrists will probably have treated a child with early acute-onset obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) behaviors due to the pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder associated with Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus, abbreviated PANDAS, described more than two decades ago; or Tourette syndrome, incorporating motor and vocal tics, described more than a century ago. One typically self-limited post-infectious OCD resulting from exposure to other putative microbial disease triggers defines PANS, abbreviating pediatric autoimmune

Children and adolescents: Respiratory infection and long-term effects longitudinal study (CARE Study): Study protocol.

BACKGROUND: The effects of SARS-Cov-2 infection can extend beyond the acute phase of the illness, often described as Long COVID, post-COVID condition (PCC) or Post-acute sequelae of COVID (PASC). Post-acute sequelae (PAS) are also likely to be a problem for a small proportion of children and adolescents following influenza infection. However, there is no comprehensive ongoing data collection in Australian children and adolescents, and global data on both PCC during the SARS-Cov-2 Omicron variant period and PAS following influenza is limited. AIM: This study aims to determine the cumulative in

Defective Epstein-Barr virus in chronic active infection and haematological malignancy.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is highly prevalent in humans and is implicated in various diseases, including cancer1,2. Chronic active EBV infection (CAEBV) is an intractable disease classified as a lymphoproliferative disorder in the 2016 World Health Organization lymphoma classification1,2. CAEBV is characterized by EBV-infected T/natural killer (NK) cells and recurrent/persistent infectious mononucleosis-like symptoms3. Here, we show that CAEBV originates from an EBV-infected lymphoid progenitor that acquires DDX3X and other mutations, causing clonal evolution comprising multiple cell

Cross-sectional imaging of complicated urinary infections affecting the lower tract and male genital organs.

Complicated urinary tract infections (C-UTIs) are those associated with structural or functional genitourinary abnormalities or with conditions that impair the host defence mechanisms, leading to an increased risk of acquiring infection or failing therapy. C-UTIs occur in patients with risk factors such as neurogenic dysfunction, bladder outlet obstruction, obstructive uropathy, bladder catheterisation, urologic instrumentation or indwelling stent, urinary tract post-surgical modifications, chemotherapy- or radiation-induced damage, renal impairment, diabetes and immunodeficiency.Multidetector

The mental health of women and climate change: Direct neuropsychiatric impacts and associated psychological concerns.

Climate change brings exposures to heat, air pollution, poorer quality food, and infectious disease that have significant direct effects on women and their mental health. These environmental impacts are multifaceted in their consequences and raise risks of depression, suicide, violent victimization, post-traumatic stress disorder, and various other neuropsychiatric symptoms. Women also suffer increased climate psychological risks from higher rates of stillbirth, preterm birth, and developmental problems in their children. Here we review what is known about the overlap of women's individual men

COVID-19-Induced Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome and Dysautonomia.

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a disorder characterized by orthostatic intolerance and, by definition, includes clinical symptoms of lightheadedness, palpitations, and tremulousness among others. It is considered a relatively rare condition that affects approximately 0.2% of the general population, and it is estimated that between 500,000 to 1,000,000 individuals in the United States have the condition and recently has been linked to post-infectious (viral) etiologies. We present a case of a 53-year-old woman who was diagnosed with POTS following extensive autoimmune worku

The shared genetic risk factors between Tourette syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Tourette syndrome (TS) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are two neuropsychiatric disorders that frequently co-occur. Previous evidence suggests a shared genetic diathesis underlying the comorbidity of TS and OCD. This review aims to comprehensively summarize the current literature on the genetic factors linked with TS and its comorbidities, with a focus on OCD. Family studies, linkage analysis, cytogenetic studies, and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have played a pivotal role in identifying common and rare genetic variants connected with TS and OCD. Although the genetic framewor

[Hepatic complications in the postoperative of cardiac surgery].

In a study of fifty patients subjected to cardiac surgery nine (18%) had immediate post-operative liver complications. These included persistente jaundice, an increase in hepatomegaly and elevation of the alkaline phosphatase. In these and the rest of the cases there were extra-hepatic complications such as hyposystole, infarct, the post-pericardiotomy syndrome as related to the heart. Pulmonary complications were of infectious nature and a general complication was sepsis. These complications were sufficiently important to relate them etiologically to the hepatic disorder. Especially important

Emerging roles of α/β hydrolase domain (ABHD) proteins in S-palmitoylation modification: molecular mechanisms, structural features, and pathological implications.

S-palmitoylation, a reversible post-translational modification, regulates critical biological processes and represents a promising therapeutic target for diverse human diseases. Over the past decade, human α/β hydrolase domain (ABHD) proteins have emerged as key regulators of the dynamic S-palmitoylation/depalmitoylation cycle, yet a systematic overview of their roles in this modification remains lacking. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the functions of emerging ABHD proteins-including ABHD17A/B/C, ABHD16A, ABHD10, ABHD7, and ABHD8-in the dynamics of S-palmitoylation and depalm

Relationship between ABO blood group and pregnancy complications: a systematic literature analysis.

Given the expression of ABO blood group antigens on the surface of a wide range of human cells and tissues, the putative interplay of the ABO system in human biology outside the area of transfusion and transplantation medicine constitutes an intriguing byway of research. Thanks to evidence accumulated over more than 50 years, the involvement of the ABO system in the pathogenesis of several human diseases, including cardiovascular, infectious and neoplastic disorders, is now acknowledged. However, there is controversial information on the potential association between ABO blood type and adverse
