Factors Associated with Perceived Continuity of Care Among Patients Suffering from Mental Disorders.

This cross-sectional study identified variables associated with continuity of care among 327 patients with mental disorders receiving services from a variety of professionals in different Quebec settings. Based on the Andersen's Behavioral Model, a linear regression analysis was performed. Attention deficit and mood disorders were negatively associated with continuity of care, while substance use disorders and quality of life revealed positive associations. Consulting a psychologist was linked to weaker continuity of care whereas visiting a drug rehabilitation center, social support, and satis

Attachment as a predictor of therapeutic outcome: a case study of a young patient with psychosis.

Therapeutic alliance is one of the predictors of a successful therapy. In the current case study of the 26 year old male student diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia we discuss the possible consequences of a short break in the therapeutic process on the treatment outcome. The client was appointed to an assistant psychologist for study support sessions and to work on his social skills and anxieties. The therapy continued regularly for a month and a half with some visible results in motivation, engagement and mood. After a break in the sessions due to the psychologist's absence, the client did

[AIDS: challenge to liaison psychiatry. Various expectations by clinicians concerning liaison psychiatry].

Interdisciplinary group work could be conceived as shared common abilities in order to provide a global management of diseases. In this regard, psychologists should assumed several tasks: to advise on patient's psychological resources to keep them less anxious or more cooperative, to humanize hospital and death, to prevent burn-out. This does not mean a management of the illness, but a careful listening to help patients to find a meaning to what they are living. The aim should not to harmonize different skills but to define each other place (physician, social worker, nurse, psychologist...) co

Forensic Case Formulation: Exploring the Knowledge, Opinions, and Training Experiences of Staff Working Within the Offender Personality Disorder Pathway.

Forensic case formulation (FCF) is a key activity within the Offender Personality Disorder Pathway (OPDP), performed by OPDP specialist offender managers (OMs) and psychologists. Although FCF training is provided to OMs, there are a number of questions about the adequacy and effectiveness of this training. Furthermore, it is unclear whether psychologists receive sufficient support to keep their FCF skills relevant and effective over time. This study aimed to investigate the FCF training experiences of OPDP staff, to assess staff satisfaction with this training, to identify ways of improving th

Health professionals' factual knowledge and changing attitudes toward transsexuals.

General practitioners (GPs), obstetrician-gynecologists, urologists, psychiatrists and clinical psychologists (total N = 202) were randomly surveyed to assess their knowledge of the syndrome of transsexuality and their attitudes toward transsexual patients and sex reassignment surgery. A low return rate, though, requires that the present data be interpreted prudently. Where possible, the current findings were compared with the attitudinal data published in 1966 by Green, Stoller and MacAndrew. Over this interval an increasingly liberal and favorable trend in attitudes was noted amongst all med

ENhancing Assessment of Common Therapeutic factors (ENACT) tool: adaptation and psychometric properties in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The ENhancing Assessment of Common Therapeutic factors (ENACT) tool measures a set of therapeutic competencies required for the effective psychological intervention, including delivery by non-specialists. This paper describes the systematic adaptation of the ENACT for the South African (SA) context and presents the tool's initial psychometric properties. METHODS: We employed a four-step process: (1) Item generation: 204 therapeutic factors were generated by SA psychologists and drawn from the original ENACT as potential items; (2) Item relevance: SA therapists identified 96 items

Psychological Crisis Intervention for COVID-19 Lockdown Stress in Patients With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Survey Study and Qualitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged the worldviews of most people. Social isolation after the COVID-19 lockdown has not only led to economic difficulties but also resulted in adverse psychological reactions. As in most countries, including Poland, this situation has been very challenging for patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). In Poland, a crisis intervention team for patients with T1DM was established. The goal of the team was to provide psychological support for these patients, if needed, and to present information concerning how these patients may obtain medical cons

Interrater reliability of the DSM-5 and ICD-11 Criterion A for PTSD and complex PTSD in parents of children with autism using the Life Events Checklist.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with autism demonstrate elevated traumatic stress symptoms, but seldom receive diagnoses of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or complex PTSD. An accurate assessment of Criterion A is essential for a valid diagnosis of these disorders, yet it is uncertain whether Criterion A, as defined by the two primary international diagnostic systems (DSM-5-TR and ICD-11), yields consistent interrater reliability, when psychologists rely solely on self-report from these parents for assessing PTSD or complex PTSD. AIMS: This study aims to investigate interrater reliabili

The most influential decision factors for choosing a formal diagnostic classification system for describing personality pathology.

There are currently three models for diagnosing personality disorders for practitioners to choose from in the formal diagnostic classification systems Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and International Classification of Diseases (ICD): the categorical model retained from DSM-IV, a dimensional model in the ICD-11, and the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) that is a hybrid of categorical and dimensional methods. We used a sequential mixed-methods approach to explore how psychologists and psychiatrists decide which model to use for diagnosing pers

Domestic Violence Between Childhood Incest and Re-victimization: A Study Among Anti-violence Centers in Italy.

The study focuses on a specific problem in the area of child sexual abuse (CSA), which is still under-researched: the relationship between incest and adult female re-victimization treatment within the ambit of domestic violence in Italian centers. About 112 anti-violence centers were contacted, but only 13 participated and only 16 psychologists were interviewed to reconstruct the biographies of 32 victims. The study aimed to examine if and how the service centers recognized and dealt with the problem of re-victimization among survivors based on psychologists' narrations. Findings showed that t

A meta-analysis of personality in scientific and artistic creativity.

Theory and research in both personality psychology and creativity share an essential commonality: emphasis on the uniqueness of the individual. Both disciplines also share an emphasis on temporal consistency and have a 50-year history, and yet no quantitative review of the literature on the creative personality has been conducted. The 3 major goals of this article are to present the results of the first meta-analytic review of the literature on personality and creative achievement, to present a conceptual integration of underlying potential psychological mechanisms that personality and creativ

Rethinking psychological treatment targets for pediatric rumination syndrome: Clinical implications from a case series analysis.

Rumination syndrome (RS) is a common pediatric disorder of gut-brain interaction. However, a dearth of research on efficacious treatment to help guide clinical decision-making remains. Thus, relying on well-established treatment recommendations for other conditions with similar mechanisms or symptom profiles may be helpful; for example, conceptualizing RS treatment targets to address it as a "tic disorder of the gut" could be beneficial. To demonstrate the clinical utility of this conceptualization, we presented two cases that provide broad implications for treating pediatric RS. In both cases

The Role of Psychology in the Care of Children With Pancreatitis.

Children with acute recurrent and chronic pancreatitis experience severe abdominal pain that may be intermittent or chronic. Pain is often debilitating, causing interference with academic, social, family, and extracurricular activities that are important to youth. Disruption of these routines and the unpredictability of pain flares place children with pancreatitis at increased risk for development of anxious or depressive symptoms. Pediatric psychologists trained in cognitive-behavioral treatment are well suited to intervene on functional disability and mood disturbance, as well as teach copin

Short form of the Spanish adaptation of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory.

Background/Objective: The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) is one of the assessment instruments that are most widely used by psychologists around the world and is the seventh most broadly used by clinical psychologists in Spain. Although several short forms of the STAI have been developed since its creation, none are available for the Spanish general population. The aim of the present study was to develop and validate a short form of the STAI. Method: To achieve this, we administered the full STAI to 1,157 healthy adults, and 30 patients with generalized anxiety disorder. We conducted a di

[Psychology in rehabilitation].

The article gives an overview of the importance and potentialities of psychology in the context of rehabilitation, outlining, among others, the psychologist's various tasks and functions relative to diagnosis, counselling, and therapy in medical, education, vocational, and psychosocial rehabilitation. Theories describing psychosocial factors involved in the development of, and in coping with, disability are discussed. Further, psychological intervention approaches are set out, focussing on their particular relevance to rehabilitation. Special attention is given to the psychologist's position w

Treatment as usual psychological therapy for complex post-traumatic stress disorder in National Health Services in Scotland.

OBJECTIVES: With Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) as a new diagnostic category, there is a diversity of interventions and influences on clinical practice, it is prudent that we gather information about current 'treatment as usual'. This study aims to address this need by describing the current clinical landscape of CPTSD treatments offered in NHS services in Scotland. METHODS: An online survey was distributed via heads of service managers to clinicians working with adults. The survey posed questions about psychological therapy models, professional experience and, for the clinici

The experience of professionals receiving patients with manifestations of traumatic dissociation: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic dissociation is defined as a disruption or disturbance in the integration of various cognitive functions in response to a traumatic event and has been the subject of extensive research in recent decades. For mental health professionals, exposure to patients with a history of trauma can have both negative and positive effects on their well-being. However, few studies have focused on the specific experiences of professionals encountering patients with traumatic dissociation. METHOD: This study analyzed the experiences of 23 professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, and
