Psychophysiological assessment of respiratory function in panic disorder: evidence for a hyperventilation subtype.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has found differences in respiratory function between panic disorder and other anxiety disorder populations. These differences have been explained as reflecting either a) a specific feature of panic disorder, b) merely a sign of increased general arousal, or c) a result of population sampling error. The current study addressed the question of such differences by using improved methodology over previous research. A preliminary evaluation of respiratory symptoms during panic attacks was undertaken as a means of identifying a respiratory-sensitive subtype of the panic

Psychophysiological and biochemical changes in patients with panic attacks in a defined situational arousal.

A group of 27 patients with panic disorder with or without agoraphobia were compared with 10 control subjects before stress exposure. No statistically significant differences between patients and controls were found for the cardiovascular parameters. Skin conductance level and skin conductance reaction were significantly higher in the patient group. They also showed higher self-ratings in behavioural symptoms associated with anxiety. There were statistically significant higher venous plasma levels of norepinephrine in patients than in controls, although the epinephrine levels were similar. The

Controllable and uncontrollable stress in humans: alterations in mood and neuroendocrine and psychophysiological function.

The authors exposed 10 healthy human volunteers to the stress of loud (100 dB) noise under controllable and uncontrollable conditions on two separate days. Subjects reported higher self-ratings of helplessness, lack of control, tension, stress, unhappiness, anxiety, and depression; had greater hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function as measured by elevations in plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone; and had higher levels of sympathetic nervous system and electrodermal activity after the uncontrollable stress condition than after exposure to controllable stress. Thus, lack of control over eve

Biofeedback and relaxation training in the treatment of psychophysiological disorders: or are the machines really necessary?

The literature on the use of biofeedback and various forms of relaxation training in the treatment of psychophysiological disorders was reviewed; special attention was devoted to studies in which biofeedback and some form of relaxation training were compared. Based on this review, we conclude that there is no consistent advantage for one form of treatment over the other with any psychophysiological disorder for which a comparison has been made, e.g., essential hypertension, migraine headaches, premature ventricular contractions, tension headaches, temporomandibular joint pain, asthma, primary

Resting State Psychophysiology in Youth with OCD and Their Caregivers: Preliminary Evidence for Trend Synchrony and Links to Family Functioning.

The burden of OCD in children and adolescents extends to their caregivers. Prior work in other disorders and unaffected youth has found synchrony in psychophysiological arousal for youth-caregiver dyads. This preliminary study explored whether psychophysiological trend synchrony in youth-caregiver dyads (N = 48) occurred and was moderated by youth OCD diagnosis. We also explored whether psychophysiological indices (i.e., electrodermal activity, heart rate, respiratory sinus arrhythmia) were correlated with reported family functioning in the OCD subsample (n = 25). Youth with OCD had higher res

Hitting the Wall in Marathon Running: An Integrative Psychophysiological and Durability-Based Review.

Background/Objectives: Hitting the wall (HTW) is a common and performance-limiting phenomenon in marathon running, traditionally attributed to glycogen depletion and reduced carbohydrate availability. However, the persistence of late-race performance collapse despite advances in fueling strategies suggests that HTW may not be explained by a single metabolic mechanism. Instead, HTW may represent a psychophysiological performance-collapse phenomenon arising from the interaction between physiological strain, perceived exertion, pacing regulation, and the athlete's capacity to preserve function un

Psychophysiological Responses to a Brief Self-Compassion Exercise in Armed Forces Veterans.

Armed Forces personnel are exposed to traumatic experiences during their work; therefore, they are at risk of developing emotional difficulties such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), following traumatic experiences. Despite evidence to suggest that self-compassion is effective in reducing the symptoms of PTSD, and greater levels of self-compassion are associated with enhanced resilience, self-compassion in armed forces personnel and armed forces veterans remains under-researched. As a result, it is not known if therapeutic approaches that use self-compassion interventions are an accept

Honeycomb: a template for reproducible psychophysiological tasks for clinic, laboratory, and home use.

OBJECTIVE: To improve the ability of psychiatry researchers to build, deploy, maintain, reproduce, and share their own psychophysiological tasks. Psychophysiological tasks are a useful tool for studying human behavior driven by mental processes such as cognitive control, reward evaluation, and learning. Neural mechanisms during behavioral tasks are often studied via simultaneous electrophysiological recordings. Popular online platforms such as Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) and Prolific enable deployment of tasks to numerous participants simultaneously. However, there is currently no task-crea

Approach-Avoidance Decisions Under Threat: The Role of Autonomic Psychophysiological States.

Acutely challenging or threatening situations frequently require approach-avoidance decisions. Acute threat triggers fast autonomic changes that prepare the body to freeze, fight or flee. However, such autonomic changes may also influence subsequent instrumental approach-avoidance decisions. Since defensive bodily states are often not considered in value-based decision-making models, it remains unclear how they influence the decision-making process. Here, we aim to bridge this gap by discussing the existing literature on the potential role of threat-induced bodily states on decision making and

The Role of Perceived Control in the Psychophysiological Responses to Disgust of Subclinical OCD Women.

Obsessive‒compulsive disorder (OCD), and especially contamination obsessions and washing compulsions, has been related to disgust. However, when its cardiovascular correlates have been studied, contradictory results have been found, including heart rate accelerations and decelerations. The aim of this study is to analyze emotional, cognitive, and cardiovascular responses in nonclinical (control) and subclinical participants with obsessive‒compulsive contamination/washing symptoms when confronted with a disgusting stimulus. Twenty-seven participants (14 subclinical OCD) completed a behavioral a

[Psychophysiological signs of aging in mice F1 (C57BL/6×DBA/2).].

The psychophysiological effects of aging in mice of the line F1 (C57BL/6×DBA/2) at the age of 3, 7, and 14 months were investigated. It was found that the cognitive abilities, memory and spatial orientation in all animals did not depend on age, they were able to form a 4-link food-getting habit. The instability of behavior found in all mice at the stereotyped stage of in the form of periodic reproduction of false and irrational realizations was determined by the peculiarities of the basic nervous processes - increased excitability and weakness of inhibition. It was possible to establish that t

Mixed Emotions to Near-Miss Outcomes: A Psychophysiological Study with Facial Electromyography.

Near-misses occur across many forms of gambling and are rated as unpleasant while simultaneously increasing the motivation to continue playing. On slot machines, the icon position relative to the payline moderates the effects of near-misses, with near-misses before the payline increasing motivation, and near-misses after the payline being rated as aversive. Near-misses are also known to increase physiological arousal compared to full-misses, but physiological measures to date have not been able to dissociate positive and negative emotional responses. The present study measured facial electromy

Impact of Panic on Psychophysiological and Neural Reactivity to Unpredictable Threat in Depression and Anxiety.

Exaggerated anxious responding to unpredictable threat (U-threat) is a core feature of panic disorder (PD). However, it is unknown whether this abnormality is specific to the diagnosis of PD or would manifest along a continuum of panic symptomatology (PS). Additionally, little is known about the neural processes underlying this abnormality among those high in PS. Finally, no studies have tested whether startle potentiation and limbic neural reactivity - commonly used indices of U-threat responsivity - are associated and therefore reflect common abnormalities. These questions were investigated

Evaluation of a cognitive psychophysiological model for management of tic disorders: an open trial.

BACKGROUND: Tic disorders, in particular chronic tic disorder and Tourette syndrome, affect about 1% of the population. The current treatment of choice is pharmacological or behavioural, addressing tics or the premonitory urges preceding tic onset. AIMS: The current study reports an open trial evaluating the effectiveness of a cognitive psychophysiological treatment addressing Tourette-specific sensorimotor activation processes rather than the tic. METHOD: Forty-nine people with Tourette syndrome and 36 people with chronic tics completed 10 weeks of individual cognitive psychophysiological t

Psychophysiological markers of vulnerability to psychopathology in men with an extra X chromosome (XXY).

Studying genetically defined syndromes associated with increased risk for psychopathology may help in understanding neurodevelopmental mechanisms related to risk for psychopathology. Klinefelter syndrome (47,XXY) is one of the most common sex chromosomal aneuploidies (1 in 650 male births) and associated with increased vulnerability for psychopathology, including psychotic symptoms. Yet, it remains unknown whether this increased risk is associated with underlying psychophysiological mechanisms that are typically deficient in individuals with psychotic disorders. The present study assessed thre
