Compared with intensity-modulated radiotherapy, image-guided radiotherapy reduces severity of acute radiation-induced skin toxicity during radiotherapy in patients with breast cancer.

Radiotherapy (RT) is an effective treatment for breast cancer. The side effects of breast irradiation, including skin toxicity in the irradiation field, cause considerable discomfort. This study compared the severity of skin toxicity caused by image-guided RT (IGRT) and intensity-modulated RT (IMRT) combined with an electronic portal imaging device (EPID) in breast cancer. This study retrospectively analyzed 458 patients with breast cancer who had received RT. The patients were divided into two groups: 302 and 156 patients in the IMRT and IGRT groups. In the IGRT group, 8 and 148 patients had

Dose escalation by intensity-modulated radiotherapy boost after whole pelvic radiotherapy in postoperative patients of carcinoma cervix with residual disease.

AIMS: External beam radiotherapy followed by brachytherapy is the standard treatment for patients with carcinoma cervix. However, for patients who come from peripheral hospitals after incomplete surgery, whole pelvic radiotherapy (WPRT) followed by boost with either vaginal vault brachytherapy if suitable or further external beam radiotherapy is recommended. This study was conducted to evaluate if it was possible to give a higher tumour dose using intensity-modulated radiotherapy for that group of patients who were not suitable for high dose rate vaginal vault brachytherapy because of gross di

Research progress on mechanism and dosimetry of brainstem injury induced by intensity-modulated radiotherapy, proton therapy, and heavy ion radiotherapy.

Radiotherapy (RT) is an effective method for treating head and neck cancer (HNC). However, RT may cause side effects during and after treatment. Radiation-induced brainstem injury (BSI) is often neglected due to its low incidence and short survival time and because it is indistinguishable from intracranial tumor progression. It is currently believed that the possible mechanism of radiation-induced BSI includes increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor and damage of vascular endothelial cells, neurons, and glial cells as well as an inflammatory response and oxidative stress. Intensity modulation with respiratory gating for radiotherapy of the pleural space.

We wanted to describe a technique for the implementation of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) with a real-time position monitor (RPM) respiratory gating system for the treatment of pleural space with intact lung. The technique is illustrated by a case of pediatric osteosarcoma, metastatic to the pleura of the right lung. The patient was simulated in the supine position where a breathing tracer and computed tomography (CT) scans synchronized at end expiration were acquired using the RPM system. The gated CT images were used to define target volumes and critical structures. Right pleural g

Intensity-modulated Radiotherapy Versus Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy in Head and Neck Cancers: A Comparative Analysis of Compliance, Toxicities and Dosimetric Parameters.

Introduction Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) is now a standard technique to treat head and neck cancers. Another advanced technique - volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) - is gaining popularity due to rapid treatment delivery, which allows patient comfort and reduced intrafraction motion. The present study aims to compare the compliance, dosimetric parameters and acute toxicities between both techniques in head and neck cancer patients. Materials and methods One hundred de-novo patients of head and neck cancers presenting to our department and planned to be treated by definite chem
