Neurospectrum: A Geometric and Topological Deep Learning Framework for Uncovering Spatiotemporal Signatures in Neural Activity.

Neural signals are high-dimensional, noisy, and dynamic, making it challenging to extract interpretable features linked to behavior or disease. We introduce Neurospectrum, a framework that encodes neural activity as latent trajectories shaped by spatial and temporal structure. At each timepoint, signals are represented on a graph capturing spatial relationships, with a learnable attention mechanism highlighting important regions. These are embedded using graph wavelets and passed through a manifold-regularized autoencoder that preserves temporal geometry. The resulting latent trajectory is sum

Integrating contrastive cross-modal attention and stacked GRU for hand function rehabilitation robot control.

With the intensification of population aging and the increasing incidence of neurological diseases, the demand for precise and intelligent control technology in hand rehabilitation robots has become more urgent. Traditional control methods struggle to effectively capture the dynamic temporal features of hand movements, especially in scenarios where there are modal differences between hand function data of healthy individuals and stroke patients, leading to insufficient control accuracy and poor generalization. This paper focuses on hand rehabilitation robot control technology and proposes the

Shallow recurrent decoders for neural and behavioural dynamics.

Machine learning algorithms are affording new opportunities for building bio-inspired and data-driven models characterizing neural activity. Critical to understanding decision-making and behaviour is quantifying the relationship between the activity of neuronal population codes and individual neurons. We leverage a SHallow REcurrent Decoder (SHRED) architecture for mapping the dynamics of population codes to individual neurons and other proxy measures of neural activity and behaviour. SHRED is constructed from a temporal sequence model, which encodes the temporal dynamics of limited sensor dat

A Novel Equivalent Model of Active Distribution Networks Based on LSTM.

Dynamic behaviors of distribution networks are of great importance for the power system analysis. Nowadays, due to the integration of the renewable energy generation, energy storage, plug-in electric vehicles, and distribution networks turn from passive systems to active ones. Hence, the dynamic behaviors of active distribution networks (ADNs) are much more complex than the traditional ones. The research interests how to establish an accurate model of ADNs in modern power systems are drawing a great deal of attention. In this paper, motivated by the similarities between power system differenti

MultiFAR: Multidimensional information fusion with attention-driven representation learning for student performance prediction.

The advancement in computing technology, online learning platforms, and pedagogical tools enable educators and learners to connect without temporal and geographical boundaries. The existing deep learning models to predict student performance are either simple recurrent neural networks or artificial neural networks employing demographic and hand-crafted features. This manuscript proposes a model, MultIFAR, that infuses multi-dimensional information representing different aspects of student behavior with an attention-driven deep learning model integrating bidirectional long short-term memory and

Enhancing Slip, Trip, and Fall Prevention: Real-World Near-Fall Detection with Advanced Machine Learning Technique.

Slips, trips, and falls (STFs) are a major occupational hazard that contributes significantly to workplace injuries and the associated financial costs. The application of traditional fall detection techniques in the real world is limited because they are usually based on simulated falls. By using kinematic data from real near-fall incidents that occurred in physically demanding work environments, this study overcomes this limitation and improves the ecological validity of fall detection algorithms. This study systematically tests several machine-learning architectures for near-fall detection u

Noisy models of the ventral stream reveal the impact of recurrence and learned representations on information processing timescales.

In vision neuroscience, the temporal dynamics of the sensory stream and of its neural representations are thought to be deeply linked to the function of the hierarchy of cortical areas that deal with object recognition, known as the visual ventral stream. Neural representations that are invariant under identity-preserving object transformations, and therefore allow for efficient learning of object identity, are theorized to emerge from a self-supervised learning process that attempts to extract "temporally stable" features from the sensory input. Conversely, invariance increases along the hier

Combination forecasting of COVID-19 in Bangladesh: guiding public health policy through integrated time series, ML, and DL models.

BACKGROUND: Accurate prediction of trends in infectious diseases is crucial for early public health actions, which are difficult to achieve in low-resource countries such as Bangladesh, where the healthcare system is significantly challenged. Although many researchers worldwide have utilized machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models for making COVID-19 predictions, limited research has focused on context-specific ensemble forecasting approaches for Bangladesh, creating a gap in local epidemic modeling. This study aims to design a Weighted Ensemble forecasting model that combines the

Granger causality test with nonlinear neural-network-based methods: Python package and simulation study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Causality defined by Granger in 1969 is a widely used concept, particularly in neuroscience and economics. As there is an increasing interest in nonlinear causality research, a Python package with a neural-network-based causality analysis approach was created. It allows performing causality tests using neural networks based on Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), or Multilayer Perceptron (MLP). The aim of this paper is to present the nonlinear method for causality analysis and the created Python package. METHODS: The created functions with the a

Motor decoding from the posterior parietal cortex using deep neural networks.

Objective.Motor decoding is crucial to translate the neural activity for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and provides information on how motor states are encoded in the brain. Deep neural networks (DNNs) are emerging as promising neural decoders. Nevertheless, it is still unclear how different DNNs perform in different motor decoding problems and scenarios, and which network could be a good candidate for invasive BCIs.Approach.Fully-connected, convolutional, and recurrent neural networks (FCNNs, CNNs, RNNs) were designed and applied to decode motor states from neurons recorded from V6A area i

Recurrence affects the geometry of visual representations across the ventral visual stream in the human brain.

The human brain orchestrates object vision through an interplay of feedforward processing in concert with recurrent processing. However, where, when, and how recurrent processing contributes to visual processing is incompletely understood due to the difficulties in teasing apart feedforward and recurrent processing. We combined a backward masking paradigm with multivariate analysis on EEG and fMRI data to isolate and characterize the nature of recurrent processing. We find that recurrent processing substantially shapes visual representations across the ventral visual stream, starting early on

Machine learning-assisted computation of the solubility of solid drugs in supercritical carbon dioxide.

This research applies three types of machine learning models, i.e., artificial neural network models (radial basis function, multi-layer perceptron, cascade feed-forward, and Elman recurrent neural networks), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems, and least-squares support vector machines, to determine the solubility of twenty-eight solid drugs in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). These intelligent models estimate the solubility as a function of operating conditions (equilibrium pressure and temperature), properties of solid drugs (critical temperature, critical pressure, acentric factor,

Design and development of PI controller for DFIG grid integration using neural tuning method ensembled with dense plexus terminals.

In a DFIG grid interconnected system, the control of real and reactive power relies on various factors. This paper presents an approach to regulate the flow of real and reactive power using a Neural Tuning Machine (NTM) based on a recurrent neural network. The focus is on controlling the flow of reactive power from the rotor-side converter, which is proportional to the grid-side controller through a coupling voltage. The proposed NTM method leverages neural networks to fine-tune the parameters of the PI controller, optimizing performance for DFIG grid integration. By integrating dense plexus t

Advancing throat cancer detection using an iterative multimodal machine learning approach for enhanced diagnostic accuracy.

Malignant growths in the tonsils, larynx, or pharynx are associated with throat cancer. Current diagnostic techniques are limited by subjectivity and clinician variability and rely on invasive procedures. This study examines sophisticated models for detecting throat cancer that use machine learning and multimodal analysis. Recurrent neural networks (RNNs), convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and hybrid models that combine these with other machine learning techniques are examples of state-of-the-art methods. These models enable data-driven improvements in diagnostic accuracy by utilizing a va

Organizational closure through regenerative signaling as a possible basis for conscious awareness.

Along the lines of neuronal global workspace theories, the paper hypothesizes that active neural signal regeneration in recurrent, re-entrant circuits could constitute an organizational basis for states of conscious awareness. In this view, brains are self-production systems that regenerate their own informational, signal states ("neural autopoiesis"). States of awareness themselves depend critically on sustained regeneration of sets of neural signals in local and global circuits. The set of regenerated signals at each moment determines the specific contents of consciousness. Two hypotheses ar

The Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Diagnosis and Management of Non-convulsive Seizures: A Narrative Review.

Non-convulsive seizures (NCS) are often underdiagnosed due to their subtle presentation including changes in behavior and mental status. Although electroencephalography (EEG) remains the gold standard for detection, challenges, such as subjective interpretation, individual observer variability, and limited availability, often prolong diagnosis. This can lead to severe complications, including cognitive decline and higher mortality rates. Recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) are revolutionizing epilepsy care by providing enhanced accuracy and efficiency for diagnosing and managin
