Activation of the impaired nasal mucociliary transport in children: preliminary report.

The effect of HR-6 containing adenosine triphosphate on the impaired mucociliary transport was studied in 13 children. The main symptoms in the children were chronic non-allergic rhinitis, recurrent otitis media, recurrent or chronic maxillary sinusitis and infections of the lower respiratory tract. Initially, the mucociliary transport rate ranged from 0 to 5.6 mm/min, mean 1.8 mm/min. HR-6 increased the mucociliary transport rate by 1.3-3.5, mean 2.0 mm/min. The corresponding figures for the placebo were from 0 to 0.4, mean 0.2 mm/min. These preliminary results indicate further studies with H

Behaviour during transportation predicts stress response and lower airway contamination in horses.

This study aimed to document the effects of an eight hour journey on behavioural, clinical, haematological, environmental and respiratory parameters, and to identify possible associations between factors. Twelve horses underwent clinical examination, respiratory endoscopy with tracheal wash (TW) aspiration, and collection of venous and arterial blood before (BJ) and after the journey (AJ). TW were submitted for conventional quantitative bacteriological evaluation and genetic microbiome analyses. Behaviour was assessed in stables prior to transportation and throughout the journey. Transportatio

Negative pressure pulmonary oedema secondary to airway obstruction in an intubated infant.

We report the case of a healthy one-month-old male infant who underwent an uneventful endotracheal anaesthetic for hernia repair. During transport to the recovery room (a less than 30 second trip), the endotracheal tube in the spontaneously breathing infant became obstructed, possibly due to impaction of the tip in the right main bronchus. Restoration of the airway was followed by fulminant pulmonary oedema. Several days of vigorous respiratory and pharmacologic therapy were required for resolution of the infant's respiratory distress. We review other reported cases of acute airway obstruction

Gas dispersion in a model pulmonary bifurcation during oscillatory flow.

In order to clarify the gas transport process in high-frequency oscillation, we measured the axial velocity profile and the axial effective diffusivity in a single asymmetric bifurcating tube, based on the Horsfield airway model, with sinusoidally oscillatory flow. The axial velocity profiles were measured using a laser-Doppler velocimeter, and the effective diffusivities were evaluated using a simple bolus injection method. The axial velocity profile was found to be nonuniform, promoting axial gas dispersion by the spread of the concentration profile and lateral mixing. The geometric asymmetr

Basolateral membrane H-OH-HCO3 transport in the proximal tubule.

This review focuses on the basolateral membrane mechanisms of H-OH-HCO3 transport in the proximal tubule. The mechanism that has the greatest transport capacity and mediates most of transepithelial H-HCO3 transport is the electrogenic, Na-3HCO3 cotransporter. This transporter has been extensively characterized in the salamander, rat, and rabbit proximal tubule, and has now been found in a number of other epithelia that effect transepithelial NaHCO3 transport. Transporter rate is sensitive to intra- and extracellular [Na], intra- and extracellular [HCO3]/pH, and cell voltage. Adaptations in tra

Nasal ciliary ultrastructure and function in patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia compared with that in normal subjects and in subjects with various respiratory diseases.

In an attempt to establish the relevance of ciliary ultrastructure to the pathophysiologic aspects of respiratory tract disease, we compared quantitatively the ultrastructure and function of cilia from healthy subjects (atopic and nonatopic nonsmokers, asymptomatic smokers) and patients with a variety of respiratory diseases (cystic fibrosis, chronic rhinitis, bronchiectasis associated with hypogammaglobulinemia, chronic bronchitis) with cilia from patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). In healthy subjects and patients with non-PCD respiratory disease, approximately 5% of the cilia ev

Aeromedical transport of patients receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: a 12-year experience from a regional mobile ECMO network in the French Caribbean.

BACKGROUND: The use of extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) increases for patients with refractory cardiac and/or respiratory failure. To ensure broader access to this life-saving therapy, regional ECMO networks have been developed worldwide, enabling the transfer of patients supported with ECMO to specialized referral centers. At the University Hospital of Martinique, a Mobile Circulatory Support Unit provides 24 h/7 coverage for inter-hospital aeromedical transport of patients receiving ECMO across the French Departments of the America and to mainland France. This study aimed to descri

Bioinspired Wettability Engineering Enables Efficient Exhaled Breath Condensate Harvesting for Wearable Respiratory Monitoring.

Efficient collection of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) remains a major challenge for wearable respiratory monitoring because limited sample yield often compromises analytical sensitivity and signal reliability. Herein, we report a smart bioinspired mask that enables efficient EBC harvesting through hybrid wettability engineering. Inspired by the hydrophilic-hydrophobic patterns on the Namib Desert beetle's back and the hierarchical transport networks of leaf veins, a hybrid wettability pattern consisting of hydrophilic star-shaped domains and vein-like microchannels is constructed on a superh

Respiratory Determinants of Exercise Limitation: Focus on Phrenic Afferents and the Lung Vasculature.

We examine 2 means by which the healthy respiratory system contributes to exercise limitation. These include the activation of respiratory and locomotor muscle afferent reflexes, which constrain blood flow and hasten fatigue in both sets of muscles, and the excessive increases in pulmonary vascular pressures at high cardiac outputs, which constrain O2 transport and precipitate maladaptive right ventricular remodeling in endurance-trained subjects.

The relation of sodium and potassium ion transport to the respiration and adenine nucleotide content of liver slices treated with inhibitors of respiration.

1. The dependence of the net transport of Na(+) and K(+) by rat liver on the respiration has been determined by incubating slices in the presence of varying concentrations of respiratory inhibitors. 2. Neither the rate of net transport nor the total amount of each ion transported was inhibited unless the rate of endogenous respiration was decreased below a critical value of about 330mmol of O(2)/h per kg of protein (i.e. 50% of the total endogenous respiration). 3. The uninhibited rate of respiration could be varied over a twofold range (380-770mmol of O(2)/h per kg of protein) by the use of d

Use of the esophageal stethoscope in pediatric transports.

INTRODUCTION: Monitoring cardiac and respiratory function during helicopter transports can be difficult, so the authors devised a study of the esophageal stethoscope for pediatric patients. SETTING: The study was conducted at Pediflite in Tennessee, which transports between 250 to 300 pediatric patients every year. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A disposable esophageal stethoscope was used as an adjunct to other monitoring systems in intubated patients. Prior to transport, the stethoscope was placed orally by the respiratory therapist and advanced to the point where heart sounds are heard best, at w

[Assessment of different clearance mechanisms of the lung using factor analysis].

Measurement of epithelial clearance over the lungs is always influenced by mucociliary transport since the lung is a 3-dimensional organ where ciliated and respiratory epithelia overlap. Factor analysis provides factor images and time-activity curves of extracted physiological factors corresponding to specific structures, even if these structures overlap. In 16 inhalation studies of 99m Tc-DTPA aerosol, factor analysis always extracted 2 factors with opposite temporal behavior, one corresponding to epithelial and one to mucociliary transport. Clearance rates measured over the lungs were signif

ECMO transports perspectives on organization and patient management: A narrative review.

BackgroundExtracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is an established life support technique for refractory acute cardiorespiratory failure in children and adult patients. However, ECMO support is provided only by specialized centers; therefore, demand for ECMO transport retrieval services is increasing. Mobile teams assess, accept, implant ECMO, and then transport for continued support at an ECMO center.AimTo provide an updated practical review to support ECMO teams for safe and effective transports.Material and methodsWe retrospectively reviewed literature limited to ECMO transport publishe

Transport-Related Risk Factors for Intraventricular Hemorrhage in Preterm Neonates: An Exploratory Analysis.

UNLABELLED: Preterm neonates face unique risks during ground transport due to environmental factors and the urgent need for critical interventions. Neuroprotection during transport is essential to safeguard this vulnerable population from developing intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). Despite efforts to optimize neonatal transport practices, specific transport-related factors contributing to IVH remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: The study aims to identify transport-related factors contributing to IVH, including 1) the association between critical ground transport (miles loaded, time, infan

Revisiting high-frequency oscillatory ventilation in vitro and in silico in neonatal conductive airways.

BACKGROUND: High frequency oscillatory ventilation is often used for lung support in premature neonates suffering from respiratory distress syndrome. Despite its broad use in neonatal intensive care units, there are to date no accepted protocols for the choice of appropriate ventilation parameter settings. In this context, the underlying mass transport mechanisms are still not fully understood. METHODS: We revisit the question of flow phenomena under conventional mechanical ventilation and high frequency oscillatory ventilation in an anatomically-inspired model of neonatal conductive airways

[A study of the mechanism of cyanide resistant oxidation of succinate from rat liver mitochondria in the presence of menadione].

Two operation regimes of the electron transport system were found in rat liver mitochondria during the cyanide-resistant succinate oxidation catalyzed by menadione. Under isotonic conditions, the mitochondria were found to contain two electron transport components, one of which was sensitive to mucidin, whereas the other one was inhibited by antimycin A. Both electron transport components were inhibited by thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTFA). In hypotonic media, the polyenzymatic respiratory complex of mitochondria underwent transformations. In this case the electron transport during the cyanide-re
