We describe a case series of photoreceptor dysplasia with secondary retinal degeneration in juvenile Peregrine Falcons. Six Peregrine Falcons ( Falco peregrinus) and three Peregrine Falcon × Prairie Falcon ( Falco mexicanus) hybrids had early-life visual deficits. Eight birds had visual defects shortly after hatching, and one bird had visual deficits first noticed at 5 mo of age. Complete ophthalmic examinations were performed in each animal. Eight of the animals had electroretinograms, and nine of the animals had their eyes examined histologically after euthanasia. Ophthalmic examinations did

We present a family with autosomal-dominant inheritance of renal insufficiency caused by renal hypoplasia in six individuals. In all affected individuals, signs of optic disk dysplasia were detected, but most patients were asymptomatic. A heterozygous missense mutation in the PAX2 gene causing a Gly75 to Ser substitution was present in all affected individuals. A second, unrelated patient presented with ocular complaints related to optic disk dysplasia, and had a history of vesico-ureteral reflux. A heterozygous hexanucleotide duplication in the PAX2 gene was detected leading to the duplicatio

Three new case reports of Larsen's syndrome (multiple congenital dislocations of the joints, distinctive facies and skeletal abnormalities) are presented. For the first time this condition is described to be associated with deafness and retinal dysplasia. Data in the literature show this syndrome to be inherited as sporadic, autosomal recessive or dominant. The 3 reported cases seem to have and autosomal recessive inheritance.

Four Irish setters were diagnosed with bilateral retinal degeneration and cataracts at an age ranging from six to 11 years. In three of these dogs, progressive night blindness was reported from an age of eight to 11 years. In the fourth dog, aged six, no signs of visual impairment had been noticed. In all four dogs, the rod-cone dysplasia type 1 (rcd1) mutation was excluded as a cause, using an allele-specific PCR. From their three-generation pedigrees, a familial relationship was detected in three out of four dogs, which were also related to four additional Irish setter dogs with a history an

Diode laser photoablation of the retinal periphery is an effective treatment for zone 1 or 2 threshold retinopathy of prematurity. Patients with small cell carcinoma of the lung and cancer-associated retinopathy have immunoreactivity with the 23-kD retinal cancer-associated antigen and a similar antigen is secreted by in vitro propagated cultures of small cell carcinoma of the lung. This cancer-associated autoimmune retinopathy is characterized by rapid visual loss, night blindness, color loss, and reduced electroretinograms. Angioid streaks start as narrow, short discontinuous hypopigmented s

BACKGROUND: We describe the case of a 47-year-old man referred to a retinal clinic and diagnosed with late-onset retinitis pigmentosa. Surprisingly, genetic testing revealed compound heterozygous pathogenic variants in GNPTG, leading to the diagnosis of the autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder mucolipidosis type III gamma. Mucolipidosis type III gamma is typically diagnosed during childhood due to symptoms relating to skeletal dysplasia. Retinal dystrophy is not a common phenotypic feature.
CASE PRESENTATION: Ophthalmologic examination was consistent with a mild form of retinitis pi

BACKGROUND: The Norrie disease (ND) gene (Xp11.3) (McKusick 310600) consists of one untranslated exon and two exons partially translated as the Norrie disease protein (Norrin). Norrin has sequence homology and computer-predicted tertiary structure of a growth factor containing a cystine knot motif, which affects endothelial cell migration and proliferation. Norrie disease (congenital retinal detachment), X-linked primary retinal dysplasia (congenital retinal fold), and X-linked exudative vitreoretinopathy (congenital macular ectopia) are allelic disorders.
