Role of cyclooxygenase in vasodilation of retinal blood vessels induced by bradykinin in Brown Norway rats.

We investigated the role of cyclooxygenase (COX) in bradykinin (BK)-induced vasodilation of retinal blood vessels in Brown Norway rats using a novel in vivo fluorescent fundus imaging technique. Under artificial ventilation, the animals were treated with tetrodotoxin, and the decreased blood pressure and heart rate were adjusted to the normal ranges by infusing pressor agents. Diameters of retinal blood vessels contained in the fluorescent fundus images were measured. Intravenous infusion of BK (1-30 microg/kg/min) increased diameters of retinal blood vessels and decreased blood pressure in a

Advancing Retinal Vessel Analysis: Reproducibility of Myogenic Constriction and Assessment of Regulatory Capacity.

PURPOSE: Accurate characterization of retinal microvascular autoregulation requires reliable assessment of both vasodilatory and vasoconstrictive responses. Although blood pressure (BP)-induced vasoconstriction is well recognized, its measurement lacks reproducibility data, limiting its translational applicability. This study aimed to establish and validate a standardized framework for quantifying BP-induced vasoconstriction and to introduce the control range as a novel metric for retinal microvascular regulatory capacity. METHODS: Healthy adults were assessed twice, one week apart. Retinal v

Gabor-modulated depth separable convolution for retinal vessel segmentation in fundus images.

BACKGROUND: In diabetic retinopathy, precise segmentation of retinal vessels is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective disease management. This task is particularly challenging due to the varying sizes of vessels, their bifurcations, and the presence of highly curved segments. While numerous automated segmentation techniques have demonstrated strong performance, deep neural networks have struggled to effectively model the geometric transformations of retinal vessels without extensive training datasets. Moreover, the inconsistent quality of fundus photographs often results in less than

Computer-assisted evaluation of retinal vessel tortuosity in moderate-to-late preterm children.

PURPOSE: Since very preterm children often have increased retinal tortuosity that may indicate decisive architectural changes in the systemic microvascular network, we used a new semi-automatic software to measure retinal vessel tortuosity on fundus digital images of moderate-to-late preterm (MLP) children. METHODS: In this observational case-control study, the global and local tortuosity parameters of retinal vessels were evaluated on fundus photographs of 36 MLP children and 36 age- and sex-matched controls. MTNet: A combined diagnosis algorithm of vessel segmentation and diabetic retinopathy for retinal images.

Medical studies have shown that the condition of human retinal vessels may reveal the physiological structure of the relationship between age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, atherosclerosis, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and other ophthalmic diseases and systemic diseases, and their abnormal changes often serve as a diagnostic basis for the severity of the condition. In this paper, we design and implement a deep learning-based algorithm for automatic segmentation of retinal vessel (CSP_UNet). It mainly adopts a U-shaped structure composed of an encoder and a decoder and utilizes a c

Detection of retinal blood vessel changes in multiple sclerosis with optical coherence tomography.

Although retinal vasculitis is common in multiple sclerosis (MS), it is not known if MS is associated with quantitative abnormalities in retinal blood vessels (BVs). Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is suitable for examining the integrity of the anterior visual pathways in MS. In this paper we have compared the size and number of retinal blood vessels in patients with MS, with and without a history of optic neuritis (ON), and control subjects from the cross-sectional retinal images from OCT. Blood vessel diameter (BVD), blood vessel number (BVN), and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFL

A Novel Curvature-Based Algorithm for Automatic Grading of Retinal Blood Vessel Tortuosity.

Tortuosity of retinal blood vessels is an important symptom of diabetic retinopathy or retinopathy of prematurity. In this paper, we propose an automatic image-based method for measuring single vessel and vessel network tortuosity of these vessels. Simplicity of the algorithm, low-computational burden, and an excellent matching to the clinically perceived tortuosity are the important features of the proposed algorithm. To measure tortuosity, we use curvature which is an indicator of local inflection of a curve. For curvature calculation, template disk method is a common choice and has been uti

Fast retinal vessel detection and measurement using wavelets and edge location refinement.

The relationship between changes in retinal vessel morphology and the onset and progression of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) has been the subject of several large scale clinical studies. However, the difficulty of quantifying changes in retinal vessels in a sufficiently fast, accurate and repeatable manner has restricted the application of the insights gleaned from these studies to clinical practice. This paper presents a novel algorithm for the efficient detection and measurement of retinal vessels, which is general enough that it can be applied
