Genes of cyanobacterial origin in plant nuclear genomes point to a heterocyst-forming plastid ancestor.

Plastids are descended from a cyanobacterial symbiosis which occurred over 1.2 billion years ago. During the course of endosymbiosis, most genes were lost from the cyanobacterium's genome and many were relocated to the host nucleus through endosymbiotic gene transfer (EGT). The issue of how many genes were acquired through EGT in different plant lineages is unresolved. Here, we report the genome-wide frequency of gene acquisitions from cyanobacteria in 4 photosynthetic eukaryotes--Arabidopsis, rice, Chlamydomonas, and the red alga Cyanidioschyzon--by comparison of the 83,138 proteins encoded i

Antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of lectin from marine red alga Pterocladiella capillacea.

Researchers see algae as a promising tool to discover both efficient and safe agents for pain therapy. We evaluated the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of lectin from the marine alga Pterocladiella capillacea lectin (PcL). PcL was purified and tested in classical models of nociception and inflammation. Male Swiss mice received PcL 30 min prior to receiving 0.8% acetic acid (10 microl/10 g, i.p.), 1% formalin (20 microl/intraplantar) or the hot plate test, and were compared to untreated animals or animals pretreated with indomethacin or morphine. PcL (0.9, 8.1 or 72.9 mg/kg, i.

Biogeographic and phylogenetic diversity of thermoacidophilic cyanidiales in Yellowstone National Park, Japan, and New Zealand.

Members of the rhodophytan order Cyanidiales are unique among phototrophs in their ability to live in extreme environments that combine low pH levels ( approximately 0.2 to 4.0) and moderately high temperatures of 40 to 56 degrees C. These unicellular algae occur in far-flung volcanic areas throughout the earth. Three genera (Cyanidium, Galdieria, and Cyanidioschyzon) are recognized. The phylogenetic diversity of culture isolates of the Cyanidiales from habitats throughout Yellowstone National Park (YNP), three areas in Japan, and seven regions in New Zealand was examined by using the chloropl

In vitro anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative activity of sulfolipids from the red alga Porphyridium cruentum.

A sulfoglycolipidic fraction (SF) isolated from the red microalga Porphyridium cruentum was analyzed for fatty acid composition and assayed for ability to inhibit, in vitro, the generation of superoxide anion in primed leucocytes and the proliferation of a panel of human cancer cell-lines. Results demonstrated that SF contained large amounts of palmitic acid (26.1%), arachidonic acid (C20: 4 omega-6, 36.8%), and eicopentaenoic (C20:5 omega-3, 16.6%) acids, and noticeable amounts of 16:1n-9 fatty acid (10.5%). It strongly inhibited both the production of superoxide anion generated by peritoneal

Purification and identification of apophycocyanin alpha and beta subunits from soluble protein extracts of the red alga Cyanidium caldarium. Light exposure is not a prerequisite for biosynthesis of the protein moiety of this photosynthetic accessory pigment.

Much controversy exists as to the level at which light exerts control over the biosynthesis of the photosynthetic apparatus in higher plants and other organisms. The eukaryotic red alga Cyanidium caldarium, like higher plants, undergoes light induction of chlorophyll synthesis. In addition to chlorophyll a the alga also synthesises the linear tetrapyrrole phycocyanobilin, which is combined with alpha or beta apobiliproteins to form phycocyanin, the major light-harvesting pigment in this organism. We have previously shown that the tetrapyrrole precursor 5-aminolaevulinic acid (ALA) can substitu

A mineral extract from red algae ameliorates chronic spontaneous colitis in IL-10 deficient mice in a mouse strain dependent manner.

Inflammatory bowel disease is an urgent public health problem with a high incidence in developed countries. Alterations of lifestyle or dietary interventions may attenuate the disease progression and increase the efficacy of current therapies. Here we tested the effect of chronic supplementation with a mineral extract from red marine algae - rich in calcium (34%), magnesium, phosphorus, selenium and other trace minerals - in a clinically relevant model of spontaneous enterocolitis, interleukin (IL)-10(-/-) mice. The mineral extract was administered in the drinking water of Il10(-/-) mice on C5

Red algae natural products for prevention of lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-induced liver and kidney inflammation and injuries.

BACKGROUND: The liver and kidney inflammation due to bacterial infection is one of the most common pathological problems leading to tissue damage or disease. In many liver and kidney disorders, which represent serious global health burden with a high economic cost, oxidative stress-related inflammation and apoptosis are important pathogenic components, finally resulting in acute liver and/or kidney failure. Erythropoietin and its analogues are well known to influence the interaction between apoptosis and inflammation in liver and kidney. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study is to investiga

Anti-Allergic Effect of 3,4-Dihydroxybenzaldehyde Isolated from Polysiphonia morrowii in IgE/BSA-Stimulated Mast Cells and a Passive Cutaneous Anaphylaxis Mouse Model.

In this study, we investigated the anti-allergic effects of 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (DHB) isolated from the marine red alga, Polysiphonia morrowii, in mouse bone-marrow-derived cultured mast cells (BMCMCs) and passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) in anti-dinitrophenyl (DNP) immunoglobulin E (IgE)-sensitized mice. DHB inhibited IgE/bovine serum albumin (BSA)-induced BMCMCs degranulation by reducing the release of β-hexosaminidase without inducing cytotoxicity. Further, DHB dose-dependently decreased the IgE binding and high-affinity IgE receptor (FcεRI) expression and FcεRI-IgE binding on the

Dual effects of sulfated D-galactans from the red algae Botryocladia occidentalis preventing thrombosis and inducing platelet aggregation.

Sulfated D-galactans occur on the red algae Botryocladia occidentalis as three fractions that differ in their sulfate content. Fractions F2 and F3 are potent anticoagulants. Like heparin, they enhance thrombin and factor Xa inhibition by antithrombin and/or heparin cofactor II. The inhibition potency increases simultaneously with the sulfate content of the fractions. The antithrombotic activity of these sulfated D-galactans was investigated on an experimental thrombosis model in which thrombus formation was induced by a combination of stasis and hypercoagulability. In contrast with heparin. th

Moving away from traditional antibiotic treatment: can macrocyclic lactones from marine macroalga-associated heterotroph be the alternatives?

Intertidal red algae Hypnea valentiae associated Bacillus amyloliquefaciens MTCC 12716 revealed potential inhibitory effects on the growth of drug-resistant pathogens. In the genome of B. amyloliquefaciens MTCC 12716, biosynthetic gene clusters encoding antibacterial metabolites were predicted, which might be expressed and contributed to the broad-spectrum anti-infective activity. Three homologue members of the 24-membered macrocyclic lactone family, named as bacvalactones 1-3 bearing 13-O-ethyl (1); 15-O-furanyl-13-O-isobutyl-7-O-propyl-propanoate (2); and 15-O-furanyl-13-O-isobutyl-7-O-propy

The Extract of Gloiopeltis tenax Enhances Myogenesis and Alleviates Dexamethasone-Induced Muscle Atrophy.

The decline in the function and mass of skeletal muscle during aging or other pathological conditions increases the incidence of aging-related secondary diseases, ultimately contributing to a decreased lifespan and quality of life. Much effort has been made to surmise the molecular mechanisms underlying muscle atrophy and develop tools for improving muscle function. Enhancing mitochondrial function is considered critical for increasing muscle function and health. This study is aimed at evaluating the effect of an aqueous extract of Gloiopeltis tenax (GTAE) on myogenesis and muscle atrophy caus

Dietary polysaccharide-rich extract from Eucheuma cottonii modulates the inflammatory response and suppresses colonic injury on dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis in mice.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a known medical burden in most developed countries and a significant cause of morbidity. The IBD label includes Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Pharmacological and surgical intervention are the two main management approaches for IBD. Some drugs have been developed for IBD therapy, but accessibility is limited due to high costs. Furthermore, these agents have demonstrated inactivity over long-term treatment courses. Therefore, an urgent need is present for new treatment options that are safe, able to sustain clinical remission, and improve m

Seasonal variation of the lipoidal matters and hypolipidaemic activity of the red alga Corallina officinalis L.

The lipoidal matters of Corallina officinalis L. showed a seasonal nonsignificant quantitative variation. However, the fatty acids revealed a relative increase in the summer and winter, while unsaponifiable matter exhibited a slight increase in the spring. The GC/MS analysis of saponifiable and unsaponifiable matter of the algal samples collected in different seasons revealed that samples collected in the spring contained a low cholesterol content and high steroidal compounds as well as high polyunsaturated fatty acids. The alcohol extract, hexane extract and fatty acid fraction of this algal

Maxilla sinus grafting with marine algae derived bone forming material: a clinical report of long-term results.

PURPOSE: Autogenous bone grafting continues to be considered the gold standard for sinus grafting. For the past 15 years the author has used an alternative graft material and followed-up the input/output statistic of implants to evaluate if this material results similar to the autogenous bone graft. Histomorphometric evaluations of graft materials show how much new bone is formed and if the graft material is resorbed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our study we used a marine derived carbonated red algae that is chemically converted into hydroxyapatite (HA). This material is distributed worldwide a
