Brief report: empathy and psychological adjustment in siblings of children with cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To examine relationships between empathy, illness concepts, sibling relationship variables, and psychological adjustment among siblings of children with cancer. METHODS: Participants were 29 siblings and 14 children diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myelocytic leukemia, or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Data included self- and parent-report questionnaires completed during active treatment. RESULTS: Siblings did not exhibit increased rates of behavior problems, but did display more social and academic difficulties. Empathy was a significant predictor of externalizing and

Siblings exposed to intimate partner violence: linking sibling relationship quality & child adjustment problems.

Although the majority of families that experience intimate partner violence (IPV) have more than one child, most research to date has focused upon a single child within these families. A significant body of research has indicated siblings play an important role in children's adjustment and well-being. To address this gap, the three main goals of the present study were to compare the adjustment of older and younger siblings exposed to IPV, to describe and compare the quality of these sibling relationships from multiple perspectives, and to investigate how sibling adjustment and relationship qua

Gamete donation: parents' experiences of searching for their child's donor siblings and donor.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the new phenomenon of parents of donor offspring searching for and contacting their child's 'donor siblings' (i.e. donor offspring conceived by the same donor) and donor. METHODS: Online questionnaires were completed by 791 parents (39% lone-mother, 35% lesbian-couple, 21% heterosexual-couple, 5% non-specified) recruited via the Donor Sibling Registry; a US-based international registry that facilitates contact between donor conception families who share the same donor. Data were collected on parents' reasons for searching for their child's donor siblings an

Description, Articulation and Limitations in the Social Theory of Insurance.

There have been surprisingly few sustained efforts to explain or theorise the role insurance plays in society. Even the most theoretically inflected insurance scholarship, emanating from governmentality and Actor Network Theory scholarship, tends to be grounded in empirical cases, set in particular periods and places, and it is often ambivalent toward the label of theory. It is surprising both because of the foundationally social character of insurance and because of its sheer heft - economically and politically insurance is everywhere and involved, somehow, in everything. As many working in t

"Do I exist in this world, really, or is it just her?" Youths' perspectives of living with a sibling with anorexia nervosa.

Little is known about how severe anorexia nervosa (AN) in youths affects siblings and siblings' experiences of family-based treatment for AN. Thirteen youths (M age = 15.5 years, SD = 3.0; 23% boys) who had been co-admitted with their sibling with AN and parents at an inpatient clinic for eating disorders 3 to 6 years earlier participated in qualitative interviews. Interviews were analyzed using systematic text condensation. Results showed AN is difficult to understand, particularly at onset, and is associated with confusion and lack of information for siblings. AN evokes difficult emotions, i

Novel in-frame deletion mutation in FLCN gene in a Korean family with recurrent primary spontaneous pneumothorax.

Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHDS) is an autosomal dominant disease presenting with skin fibrofolliculomas, pulmonary cysts, primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP), and renal cancer. It is caused by germline mutations in the FLCN gene, which encodes folliculin. Here we report a novel in-frame deletion mutation p.F143del (c.427_429delTTC) in exon 6 of FLCN gene in the proband and her two sisters. The proband was a 40-year-old Korean woman who presented with right-sided pneumothorax and papular lesions on the face and neck area but without renal cancer. Her father also had a history of PSP and died

Impact of coping styles on substance use in persons with psychosis, siblings, and controls.

BACKGROUND: Substance use is overrepresented in patients with psychosis. Maladaptive coping has been proposed as one of the mechanisms which might underlie this high prevalence. Patients are known to apply more maladaptive coping compared to the healthy population. However, it is unknown whether coping is associated with the use of different substances across those with different vulnerability for psychosis, and whether coping mediates the possible association between life events and substance use. METHODS: In this multicenter, cohort study, 429 patients, 504 siblings, and 220 controls were i

Sibling relationships of anxious children: a preliminary investigation.

Examined the sibling relationships of anxious children and nonclinic controls using both self-report and observational coding. Thirty-six clinically anxious and 15 control sibling pairs completed the Sibling Relationship Questionnaire (SRQ) and participated in two 5-min sibling discussion tasks. Discriminant analyses were used to predict group membership using the SRQ factor scores of Warmth/Closeness, Conflict and Status/Power, and the coded dimensions of Warmth, Hostility, Control of Sibling, and Task Maintenance. Compared to control children, the sibling interactions of anxious children wer

Sibling sexual abuse: why don't we talk about it?

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore two hypotheses for explaining why there is little written about sibling sexual abuse and to raise awareness of the subject in order better to protect children and to facilitate sensitive patient care. BACKGROUND: While there is no universal agreement over its definition, sibling sexual abuse is acknowledged internationally as a prevalent form of child sexual abuse but tends not to be recognised by health professionals. It is also under-represented within the literature in comparison with other forms of intrafamilial sexual abuse. Understanding why this is may h

Childhood sibling loss. A family tragedy.

The loss of a significant object, the loss of a home (security, personal possessions, familiar space that has emotional meaning), the dislocation from one's home or land as occurs in wars or disasters, gives rise to stress-strain responses that may have short-term or long-term effects, eg, post-traumatic stress disorder. The hidden or neglected victims of such occurrences frequently are children--be they siblings or direct descendants. In childhood sibling loss, the effects of the loss are mediated through different members of the family. The acute stressors can give rise to later adversity un

Sibling socialization of alcohol use during adolescence: An integrated model of sibling influence processes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Research demonstrates that siblings, especially older siblings, make unique contributions to adolescents' substance use above and beyond shared genetics and shared parenting. Older siblings' influences on younger adolescent siblings' alcohol use operate through both direct and indirect pathways. Using three waves of longitudinal data, the present study tested an integrated model of sibling influence processes focused on the linkages between older adolescent siblings' earlier alcohol use and younger adolescent siblings' later alcohol use. DESIGN: Longitudinal study using d

The Lived Experience of Sisters With an Incarcerated Brother: A Phenomenological Study.

The major increase of incarcerated individuals in the United States has led to a variety of issues. The experience of incarceration has an impact on not only the individual but the entire family system. However, the impact on the sibling relationship has yet to be explored in the literature. The current study examined the lived experience of sisters with an incarcerated brother. In this qualitative study, semi-structured interviews with five sisters with an incarcerated brother were conducted. The results displayed five themes that emerged from the interviews: emotional impact, adjustment, pri

Adjustment, sibling problems and coping strategies of brothers and sisters of children with autistic spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Siblings of children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) express more problem behaviours and experience more difficulties in their relationships than do children in families where all children are developing typically. We know little about what contributes to these difficulties. METHOD: Mothers of a child with ASD completed the Child Behavior Checklist (Achenbach, 1991) with respect to a non-disabled sibling. Siblings responded to a questionnaire tapping their knowledge about their brother or sister's disorder. They reported on problems they had experienced with their brother or

Agraphia in patients with frontotemporal dementia and parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17 with P301L MAPT mutation: dysexecutive, aphasic, apraxic or spatial phenomenon?

OBJECTIVES: Patients with frontotemporal dementia and parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17 (FTDP-17) may be agraphic. The study aimed at characterizing agraphia in individuals with a P301L MAPT mutation. METHODS: Two pairs of siblings with FTDP-17 were longitudinally examined for agraphia in relation to language and cognitive deficits. RESULTS: All patients presented with dysexecutive agraphia. In addition, in the first pair of siblings one sibling demonstrated spatial agraphia with less pronounced allographic agraphia and the other sibling had aphasic agraphia. Aphasic agraphia was also pre

Family Subsystems Predicting Adolescents' Perceptions of Sibling Relationship Quality Over Time.

This study examined associations between parents' relationship conflict and parent-adolescent triangulation, and changes in adolescents' perceptions of sibling affection and hostility. The goal was to learn whether conflict in parents' relationships spills over to siblings' relationships, or whether siblings compensate by becoming less hostile and more affectionate. Using a subsample (N = 400) from the Flourishing Families Project (FFP), we found a trend for mother-adolescent triangulation predicting an increase in sibling hostility across 2 years. Fathers' reports of relationship conflict wer

Neurocognitive functioning in symptomatic adults with sickle cell disease: A description and comparison with unaffected siblings.

Children and adults with sickle cell disease (SCD) are at risk for neuropsychological deficits; however, the neurocognitive functioning of adults with SCD and related comorbidities has not been widely reported in the literature. We examined specific cognitive domains in symptomatic adults with SCD and compared them with their unaffected siblings. We also examined relationships between cognitive scores, patient-reported outcomes (PROs), and medical/laboratory values. Thirty patient-sibling pairs (M patient age = 32.5 years, M sibling age = 32.1 years) completed evaluations as part of a medical
