Poor oral health and hygiene are increasingly recognized as major risk factors for pneumonia among the elderly. To identify modifiable oral health-related risk factors, we prospectively investigated associations between a constellation of oral health behaviors and incident pneumonia in the community-living very elderly (i.e., 85 years of age or older). At baseline, 524 randomly selected seniors (228 men and 296 women; mean age, 87.8 years) were examined for oral health status and oral hygiene behaviors as well as medical assessment, including blood chemistry analysis, and followed up annually

PURPOSE: This letter has the purpose of alerting the medical community to the impact of sleep debt on growth hormone (GH) therapy, mostly applied to pediatric and puberty ages. METHODS: We discussed the role of sleep in GH release, especially N3 sleep. RESULTS: During sleep, hypothalamus is stimulated to secrete growth hormone–releasing hormone (GHRH) which activates synthesis and secretion of GH by anterior pituitary gland. Studies focusing on the interaction of sleep and GH release are scarce and have controversial results. Some studies have found a direct effect of N3 sleep in GH pulse, ind

OBJECTIVES: To assess general pediatricians' screening practices for sleep-related issues and assess their knowledge on common sleep complaints in children, their perceived barriers to screening for sleep issues, and whether they have received training regarding sleep issues.
METHODS: A national random sample (n = 700) of general pediatricians who were members of the American Academy of Pediatrics were sent a valid and reliable questionnaire on sleep problems in youth.
RESULTS: A total of 346 pediatricians (49%) responded. The vast majority (96%) indicated that they believed it was their job

We conducted a longitudinal study to investigate the relation between sleep experiences and dissociative symptoms in a mixed inpatient sample at a private clinic evaluated on arrival and at discharge 6 to 8 weeks later. Using hierarchical regression analyses and structural equation modeling, we found a link between sleep experiences and dissociative symptoms and determined that specifically decreases in narcoleptic experiences rather than insomnia accompany a reduction in dissociative symptoms. Although sleep improvements were associated with a general reduction in psychopathology, this reduct

This investigation compared progressive muscle relaxation plus cognitive distraction (PMR/CD), hypothesized to better improve sleep onset, versus sleep restriction and stimulus control (SR/SC), hypothesized to better improve sleep maintenance, versus a flurazepam (Dalmane) positive contrast condition (MED) and a sleep hygiene education minimal treatment control condition (SHE). Participants with chronic insomnia (N = 53), completed 2 baseline weeks of sleep diaries, and were randomly assigned to a treatment group for 2 more weeks. In the second phase, PMR/CD participants were assigned to 2 wee

STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the efficacy of Goodnight, Poor Sleep, a brief, single-session, peer-delivered sleep intervention based on cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia, in improving sleep, daytime functioning, and mental health in university students.
METHODS: In this 3-week, parallel-group, open-label randomized controlled trial, 178 university students (17-25yrs; 77% female) were randomly assigned (1:1) to either treatment (n = 89) or waitlist control groups (n = 89). Primary outcomes were sleep diary-assessed sleep onset latency, wake after sleep onset, total sleep tim

INTRODUCTION: Sleep problem treatments are commonly used by families raising children with developmental disabilities (DD). However, intervention targets often build exclusively on parent reports which can include inherent biases or missing information. To inform sleep intervention targets in this population, the present study explored using videosomnography-a video-based sleep assessment method.
METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study observed nine school-aged children (M age = 10 years, majority African American boys) with DD for 7-consecutive nights. Videos captured sleep-wake behavior

Sleep disturbances of insomnia type belong to the most common health problems of the modern society. Chronic insomnia, one that worsens daytime functioning and lasts over one month, occurs in 9 to 15% of the general population of developed countries. Further 15-20% of the population suffers from short term insomnia. When approaching a patient with insomnia, the physician should firstly regard sleep disturbances as a symptom related to other medical conditions. The most common causes of chronic insomnia include psychiatric disorders, addictions, somatic disorders and poor sleep habits. For succ

Insomnia, one of the non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), affects approximately 80% of patients with advanced-stage PD. In such cases, it is necessary to evaluate and treat the condition with the understanding that various factors may be involved, such as side effects or complications of medications and comorbid conditions and diseases, including primary sleep disorders and motor symptoms of PD. The principles of treatment include sleep hygiene education, control of nocturnal motor symptoms through adjustment of anti-parkinsonian medications with consideration of continuous dopamine

Problem gambling and sleep difficulty threaten health. Using the basis of self-regulatory theory, potential mechanisms for these problems were investigated. Fifty-nine treatment-seeking gamblers completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (sleep difficulty), the Sleep Hygiene Index (negative sleep habits), the Problem Gambling Severity Index and measures of self-regulatory capacity and arousability with data entered into regression analyses. Results supported the relationship between problem gambling and greater sleep difficulty (β = .18, t = 3.22, p < .01). Self-regulatory capacity mediated

Disturbance of sleep is a symptom of heterogeneous origin. Hypersomnia (excessive sleep during daytime) must be carefully distinguished from hyposomnia. Hypersomnic patients should be referred to a neurologist for further diagnostic workup; hypnotics may be dangerous in these patients. Medical, psychiatric and other cases of hyposomnia should be identified and treated as part of a comprehensive therapy plan. Counselling and application of the rules of sleep hygiene should be considered. When drug therapy is indicated, benzodiazepines are preferable. Because chronic insomnia causes serious impa

OBJECTIVES: Studies have found associations between occupational burnout symptoms and reduced engagement with healthy behaviours. We sought to characterise demographic, employment and sleep characteristics associated with occupational burnout symptoms, and to evaluate their relationships with adherence to COVID-19 prevention behaviours (mask usage, hand hygiene, avoiding gatherings, physical distancing, obtaining COVID-19 tests if potentially infected).
METHODS: During December 2020, surveys were administered cross-sectionally to 5208 US adults (response rate=65.8%). Quota sampling and survey

Background: Chronic insomnia is characterized by disturbed sleep that occurs despite adequate opportunity and circumstances to sleep. Many patients with chronic insomnia have comorbid mental illnesses or medical illnesses that contribute and precipitate insomnia. Hallmark of chronic insomnia treatment includes non-pharmacological measures such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). Pharmacologic treatment (sedative or hypnotic agents) has been disappointing because of poor efficacy and numerous undesirable side effects. Other new therapies including meditation have been proven t

BACKGROUND: Many alcoholics continue to experience disrupted sleep after quitting drinking. Previous studies with recovering alcoholics have relied on retrospective questionnaires and a single night of polysomnography to document sleep problems. In the present study, sleep was assessed at home over the course of a week using both subjective and objective sleep measures.
METHODS: A mixed gender group of alcoholics in recovery (n = 63) experiencing insomnia underwent a multimodal sleep assessment including a structured interview, daily sleep diaries, questionnaires, and ambulatory sleep monitor

Sleep supports cardiovascular, metabolic, neurologic, and psychological health. Beyond duration, circadian alignment is crucial because regular sleep, light exposure, feeding, and activity synchronize central and peripheral clocks. Modern chronodisruption from artificial light, irregular schedules, shift work, late eating, and insufficient sleep misaligns these rhythms and increases chronic disease risk. This review summarizes evidence linking sleep and circadian disruption to cardiovascular disease, metabolic dysfunction, and neurodegeneration. The American Heart Association's Life's Essentia

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances, including delayed sleep phase disorder (DSPD) and disorders of sleep initiation and maintenance (DIMS), have repeatedly been identified in adult obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). These disturbances have not been well-characterized objectively in pediatric OCD.
METHODS: Thirty OCD-affected youth (8-18 yrs, 40% male) and 30 age and gender-matched healthy controls (HCs) completed the Sleep Disturbances Scale for Children (SDSC), and one week of continuous actigraphy with concurrent sleep diary documentation. A subsample completed the Children's Sleep Hygiene Sc

Sleep disorders are common among the elderly and are associated with diminished quality of life, increased risk for development of psychiatric disorders, inappropriate use of sleep aids, and decreased daytime functioning. The most common and important sleep disorders in the elderly include insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, restless legs syndrome, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, and the advanced sleep phase syndrome. In this article, we summarize the current treatment strategies for each of these sleep-related disorders. Before contemplating specific treatments, the author

Evidence suggests that sleep disorders and sleep fragmentation are very common in nursing home residents. A variety of factors contribute to these sleeping difficulties, including age-related changes in sleep; the high prevalence of dementia, depression, medical illness and medications that affect sleep; and sleep disorders such as respiratory disturbance of sleep. Other important factors include common lifestyle characteristics in nursing home residents (such as inactivity, large amounts of time spent in bed, lack of bright light exposure, and poor sleep hygiene) and the disruptive night-time

UNLABELLED: Sleep insufficiency is often associated with the life of a university student, yet it is well known that inadequate sleep can have a negative impact on physical and mental health and be detrimental to cognitive skills for learning. The aim of this study was to replicate a Canadian study to survey university student sleep practices, the way in which students address any sleep issues, and the students' preferred method to receive targeted sleep information.
METHODS: An anonymous on-line survey was promoted to all enrolled students at one Australian University in August 2017.
