Identifying Subgroups of Intersectional Stigma, Discrimination, and the Association with Mental Health Outcomes Among HIV-Positive Men Who Have Sex with Men: A Latent Class Analysis.

This study aimed to (1) identify latent classes of stigma and discrimination experiences among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV; (2) examine the associations between class membership and mental health outcomes, and (3) investigate the moderating effects of social support and resilience. The study used the baseline (N = 224) and six-month follow-up data (N = 118) from a longitudinal cohort study on HIV and hypertension among African American and Asian Pacific American MSM in Hawai'i and Philadelphia from 2019 to 2023. Latent class analysis was conducted to characterize the patter

Implications of mainstream classrooms for adolescents with spina bifida.

This study examined the social and academic implications of mainstream, mainstream and special (combined) or special-class education for 31 adolescents with spina bifida, and for their primary caretakers. The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and the UCLA Loneliness Scale (adolescents) and the Personality Inventory for Children (caretakers) were administered. Adolescents in mainstream classes had the most normal scores for academic and social skills, those in combined classes had intermediate scores and those in special classes had the lowest scores. Paradoxically, adolescents in combined classe

Crossing boundaries: women's gossip, insults and violence in sixteenth-century France.

Using evidence from cases recorded in the registers of the consistories of southern France, the author investigates the way in which Languedocian women policed each other's behaviour, enforcing a collective morality through gossip, sexual insult and physical confrontation. In contrast to case studies by other historians, it is argued here that gossip does appear to have been a peculiarly female activity, but far more than simply being an outlet for malice or prurience, it gave women a distinctive social role in the town. No less evident is the involvement of women in physical violence both aga

Syndemics of complex risk factors in adolescents: findings from the youth risk behavior survey, 2021.

Syndemic theory posits that multiple, interconnected health behaviors-such as substance use, anxiety, depression, sexual risk behaviors, and societal or social stressors-interact synergistically within specific populations, particularly in those who face social disadvantage. These health behaviors are not isolated, but are shaped and exacerbated by social, economic, and environmental factors. Using data from the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (N = 17,232), this cross-sectional study examined how the co-occurrence of substance use, mental health challenges, sexual risk behaviors,

Sociodemographic and substance use characteristics associated with typologies and composition of social support networks among youth experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles, USA.

Youth experiencing homelessness are a vulnerable population with increased behavioural health risks. Social networks are a consistent correlate of youths' substance use behaviours. However, less is known about the reciprocal relationships among these constructs. This study classified youth experiencing homelessness according to their social support network type (e.g. instrumental, emotional, service) and composition (e.g. family, peers, service staff) and linked their membership in these social network classes to sociodemographic and substance use characteristics. Four waves of cross-sectional

Neighborhood socioeconomic status and race are associated with incidence disparities in oral cavity cancers.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the association between neighborhood socioeconomic status (nSES), race and incidence rate trends of oral cavity cancer (OCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used data from the SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results) 18 Census Tract-level SES and Rurality Database (2006-2018) database of the National Cancer Institute to create cohorts of OCC patients between 2006 and 2018. Annual incidence rates were calculated and trends in rates were estimated using joinpoints regression. RESULTS: The incidence of OCC is the highest among low nSES White Americans (2.86 per 100

Effect of socioeconomic status on smoking cessation behavior in selected African countries: Secondary analysis of Global Adult Tobacco Survey data (2014-2018).

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use remains a global public health challenge. While studies report that smoking cessation reduces the risk of cancer and other NCDs, evidence is scarce in African region on socio-economic determinants of smoking cessation behavior. This study examined the socio-economic differentials of smoking cessation behavior among smokers in four African countries. METHODS: The study was conducted through secondary analysis of Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) data from four African countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal and Tanzania). Smoking cessation behavior was assessed using two

Socioeconomic disparities in incidents at toxic sites during Hurricane Harvey.

BACKGROUND: Hurricane Harvey facilitated exposure to various toxic substances and floodwater throughout the greater Houston metropolitan area. Although disparities exist in this exposure and vulnerable populations can bear a disproportionate impact, no research has integrated disparities in exposure to toxic incidents following Hurricane Harvey. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between flooding, socioeconomic status (SES), and toxic site incidents. METHODS: Data on toxic site locations, reported releases, and flood water depths during Hurricane Harvey in

Social stability and HIV risk behavior: evaluating the role of accumulated vulnerability.

This study evaluated a cumulative and syndromic relationship among commonly co-occurring vulnerabilites (homelessness, incarceration, low-income, residential transition) in association with HIV-related risk behaviors among 635 low-income women in Baltimore. Analysis included descriptive statistics, logistic regression, latent class analysis and latent class regression. Both methods of assessing multidimensional instability showed significant associations with risk indicators. Risk of multiple partners, sex exchange, and drug use decreased significantly with each additional domain. Higher stabi

Trajectories of social withdrawal from middle childhood to early adolescence.

Heterogeneity and individual differences in the developmental course of social withdrawal were examined longitudinally in a community sample (N = 392). General Growth Mixture Modeling (GGMM) was used to identify distinct pathways of social withdrawal, differentiate valid subgroup trajectories, and examine factors that predicted change in trajectories within subgroups. Assessments of individual (social withdrawal), interactive (prosocial behavior), relationship (friendship involvement, stability and quality, best friend's withdrawal and exclusion/victimization) and group- (exclusion/victimizati

Patterns of Exposure to Socio-structural Stressors and HIV Care Engagement Among Transgender Women of Color.

Transgender women are disproportionately affected by HIV and experiences of social adversity that may interfere with engagement in care and viral suppression. We used latent class analysis to examine patterns of social adversity and their impact on HIV care continuum outcomes in an urban sample of transgender women of color. Participants (n = 224) were median age 29 and 86% non-Hispanic Black. Lack of resources, unemployment, and housing instability were reported by over 50%, and 41% reported history of incarceration. Latent class analysis identified 2 distinct classes representing higher and

Behavioral characteristics of children with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease.

We explored the behavioral characteristics of 24 children with Perthes' disease. Parents completed standard psychological self-administered questionnaires regarding their child's behavior: the Conners Parent Symptom Questionnaire and the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist. One third (33%) of the children had abnormally high scores in profiles associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (impulsive, hyperactive, and psychosomatic categories), much higher than the 3-5% incidence of ADHD in the general population. They also tended to have difficulties with school and social int

Poverty and living arrangements among older women: are changes in economic well-being underestimated?

Poverty rates have fallen more slowly over the last three decades among older women living alone than for other groups of elderly persons. The simultaneous increase in the percentage of elderly women living alone has given rise to speculation that these two phenomena are related. Using 1950 and 1980 Census data this relationship was explored. Over the 30-year period, poverty among elderly women fell by 35.9 percentage points. It would have fallen further if women had not changed the types of households in which they lived, but by only an additional 3 percentage points. The effect of changes in

Life-course influences on health in British adults: effects of socio-economic position in childhood and adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Little evidence exists on the role of socio-economic position (SEP) in early life on adult disease other than for cardiovascular mortality; data is often retrospective. We assess whether childhood SEP influences disease risk in mid-life, separately from the effect of adult position, and establish how associations vary across multiple measures of disease risk. METHODS: Prospective follow-up to adulthood of all born in England, Scotland and Wales during 1 week in 1958, and with medical data at age 45 years (n = 9377). Outcomes include: blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), glycosyl

The Dynamic Nature of the Socioeconomic Determinants of Cardiovascular Health: A Narrative Review.

Despite decades of social epidemiologic research, health inequities remain pervasive and ubiquitous in Canada and elsewhere. One reason may be our use of socioeconomic measurement, which has often relied on single point-in-time exposures. To explore the extent to which researchers have incorporated dynamic socioeconomic measurement into cardiovascular health outcome evaluations, we performed a narrative review. We estimated the prevalence of socioeconomic longitudinal cardiovascular research studies that identified socioeconomic exposures at 2 or more points in time between the years of 2019 a
