Impact of space environment on stability of medicines: Challenges and prospects.

To upkeep health of astronauts in a unique, isolated, and extreme environment of space is the primary goal for a successful space mission, hence, safe and efficacious medications are essential for the wellness of astronauts. Space medication has been challenged with problems related to efficacy. Along with altered physiology, one of the possible reasons could be instability of space medications in the presence of harsh spaceflight environmental conditions. Altered physical and chemical stability can result in reduced potency which can result in reduced efficacy. Right now, medicines from the I

Seasonal variation of Titan's atmospheric structure simulated by a general circulation model.

The seasonal variation of Titan's atmospheric structure with emphasis on the stratosphere is simulated by a three-dimensional general circulation model. The model includes the transport of haze particles by the circulation. The likely pattern of meridional circulation is reconstructed by a comparison of simulated and observed haze and temperature distribution. The GCM produces a weak zonal circulation with a small latitudinal temperature gradient, in conflict with observation. The direct reason is found to be the excessive meridional circulation. Under uniformly distributed opacity sources, th

Flexible Performance Control Under Constrained Actuation for Nonsquare Nonlinear Systems With Controllability Relaxation.

Prescribed performance control (PPC) for nonsquare nonlinear systems with unknown time-varying control gains and actuator constraints remains largely unexplored. This article addresses this problem by integrating a relaxed controllability condition with a flexible performance control framework based on saturation deficiency. Specifically, a refined matrix decomposition and transformation are employed to relax the controllability conditions for uncertain nonsquare nonlinear systems. Subsequently, the original system is augmented with constructed saturation auxiliary systems, which not only alle

Elliptical ejecta of asteroid Dimorphos is due to its surface curvature.

Kinetic deflection is a planetary defense technique delivering spacecraft momentum to a small body to deviate its course from Earth. The deflection efficiency depends on the impactor and target. Among them, the contribution of global curvature was poorly understood. The ejecta plume created by NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test impact on its target asteroid, Dimorphos, exhibited an elliptical shape almost aligned along its north-south direction. Here, we identify that this elliptical ejecta plume resulted from the target's curvature, reducing the momentum transfer to 44 ± 10% along the or

Bayesian Adaptive Extended Kalman-Based Orbit Determination for Optical Observation Satellites.

As the number of satellites and amount of space debris in Low-Earth orbit (LEO) increase, high-precision orbit determination is crucial for ensuring the safe operation of spacecraft and maintaining space situational awareness. However, ground-based optical observations are constrained by limited arc-segment angular data and dynamic noise interference, and the traditional Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) struggles to meet the accuracy and robustness requirements in complex orbital environments. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a Bayesian Adaptive Extended Kalman Filter (BAEKF), whic

Advanced ocular drug delivery in microgravity: Nanotherapeutic applications as cardiovascular and ophthalmic countermeasures.

Extended space missions significantly affect astronaut health, leading to various systemic and ocular conditions. The ocular surface and cardiovascular system are particularly susceptible to the unique environment within the spacecraft. This can often lead to pathologic issues such as radiation-induced accelerated atherosclerosis (RIAA), spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) and spaceflight-associated dry eye syndrome (SADES). While traditional treatments for SADES, such as artificial tears and lubricants, provide short-term relief, they may lose effectiveness during long-duratio

Microstructural and chemical features of impact melts on Ryugu particle surfaces: Records of interplanetary dust hit on asteroid Ryugu.

The Hayabusa2 spacecraft delivered samples of the carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu to Earth. Some of the sample particles show evidence of micrometeoroid impacts, which occurred on the asteroid surface. Among those, particles A0067 and A0094 have flat surfaces on which a large number of microcraters and impact melt splashes are observed. Two impact melt splashes and one microcrater were analyzed to unveil the nature of the objects that impacted the asteroid surface. The melt splashes consist mainly of Mg-Fe-rich glassy silicates and Fe-Ni sulfides. The microcrater trapped an impact melt consisting

Versatile spaceborne photonics with chalcogenide phase-change materials.

Recent growth in space systems has seen increasing capabilities packed into smaller and lighter Earth observation and deep space mission spacecraft. Phase-change materials (PCMs) are nonvolatile, reconfigurable, fast-switching, and have recently shown a high degree of space radiation tolerance, thereby making them an attractive materials platform for spaceborne photonics applications. They promise robust, lightweight, and energy-efficient reconfigurable optical systems whose functions can be dynamically defined on-demand and on-orbit to deliver enhanced science or mission support in harsh envi

Enhancing Boiling Heat Transfer on a Superheated Surface by Surfactant-Laden Droplets.

Boiling, one of the most common phase-change heat transfer methods, is widely used in nuclear power plants, spacecraft, integrated circuits, and other situations, where rapid and efficient heat transfer is crucial. However, boiling heat transfer is efficient only in a specific surface temperature range when a droplet impacts a superheated surface. Here, we enhance the boiling heat transfer and extend this temperature range by adding a tiny amount of surfactant. We find that surfactants can weaken the Kelvin effect of boiling bubbles, and thus reduce the onset of boiling driven temperature and

Adaptation to space conditions of novel bacterial species isolated from the International Space Station revealed by functional gene annotations and comparative genome analysis.

BACKGROUND: The extreme environment of the International Space Station (ISS) puts selective pressure on microorganisms unintentionally introduced during its 20+ years of service as a low-orbit science platform and human habitat. Such pressure leads to the development of new features not found in the Earth-bound relatives, which enable them to adapt to unfavorable conditions. RESULTS: In this study, we generated the functional annotation of the genomes of five newly identified species of Gram-positive bacteria, four of which are non-spore-forming and one spore-forming, all isolated from the IS

Medical imaging in microgravity.

Microgravity environment induces significant pathophysiological changes in humans. As long-term space habitation and interplanetary missions become commonplace in the next century, researchers and imaging specialists must embrace the unique challenges of microgravity research in developing innovative uses of imaging technology. Microgravity results in cephalad fluid shift, loss of electrolytes, loss of muscle and bone mass, anemia, reduced immune response, variability in gastric emptying and hepatic metabolism, increased bowel transit, and development of space motion sickness. Medical imaging

Extended magenta aurora as revealed by citizen science.

During large geomagnetic storms, red auroras are typically observed from low-latitude countries such as Japan. The color arises from a specific emission line of oxygen atoms at high altitudes. However, during the May 10-11th 2024 superstorm, magenta auroras were observed above Japan instead of the typical red. In this study, we demonstrate that the magenta hue is created by a mixture of red (O) and a blue (N2+) aurora at extremely high altitudes. The blue color originates from the N2+ first negative emission band caused by both resonant scattering of the upwelling molecular ions and heavy part

Direct detection of an asteroid's heliocentric deflection: The Didymos system after DART.

In September 2022, NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft crashed into Dimorphos and demonstrated the kinetic impact method of protecting Earth from asteroids. A fraction of the impulse delivered to Dimorphos was also imparted onto the Didymos system's barycenter, changing its heliocentric orbit. Here, we present the first-ever measurement of human-caused change in the heliocentric orbit of a celestial body. Thanks to stellar occultation and radar measurements, we estimate that the Didymos system experienced an along-track velocity change of -11.7 ± 1.3 micrometers per secon

Light curves and colours of the ejecta from Dimorphos after the DART impact.

On 26 September 2022, the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft struck Dimorphos, a satellite of the asteroid 65803 Didymos1. Because it is a binary system, it is possible to determine how much the orbit of the satellite changed, as part of a test of what is necessary to deflect an asteroid that might threaten Earth with an impact. In nominal cases, pre-impact predictions of the orbital period reduction ranged from roughly 8.8 to 17 min (refs. 2,3). Here we report optical observations of Dimorphos before, during and after the impact, from a network of citizen scientists' telescop

A large decline of tropospheric NO2 in China observed from space by SNPP OMPS.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are important constituents of air pollution. Here we use retrievals of tropospheric NO2 column from the Ozone Mapping Profiler Suite (OMPS) Nadir Mapper (NM) onboard the Suomi National Polar Partnership (SNPP) spacecraft to analyze global changes of NO2 from 2012 to 2017. The largest decline of NO2 is detected in eastern China, at a rate of -7.3 ± 1.5% per year, and almost entirely driven by wintertime decreases, indicative of decreasing anthropogenic NOx emissions. During the same period, NO2 over other regions around the globe was either stabilizing or changing at a rat

[Magnetic storms as a stress factor].

The functional characteristics variations during the magnetic storms were observed in both the healthy humans and in patients with cardio-vascular diseases as well as in cosmonauts at SOYUZ spacecraft and MIR station. These characteristics revealed a nonspecific adaptive stress reaction, which should be accompanied by the variations in the stress-hormone production rate. The neurohumoral regulation of the organism functions during the geomagnetic storms in a group of patients with cardio-vascular pathology and in a control group of healthy individuals were studied. The magnetic storm effect ch

Alteration of Proteomes in First-Generation Cultures of Bacillus pumilus Spores Exposed to Outer Space.

Bacillus pumilus SAFR-032 was originally isolated from the Jet Propulsion Lab Spacecraft Assembly Facility and thoroughly characterized for its enhanced resistance to UV irradiation and oxidative stress. This unusual resistance of SAFR-032 is of particular concern in the context of planetary protection and calls for development of novel disinfection techniques to prevent extraterrestrial contamination. Previously, spores of SAFR-032 were exposed for 18 months to a variety of space conditions on board the International Space Station to investigate their resistance to Mars-like conditions and sp

A slot region in the magnetosphere of Jupiter.

Understanding the balance between charged particle acceleration and loss is central to radiation belt research. Jupiter's Galilean moons orbit within its intense radiation environment and can act both as sources and sinks of energetic particles. Using observations from the Juno spacecraft, we identify large-scale depletions of energetic electrons along Europa's orbit. These depletions are too deep to result from direct absorption by the moon alone. Here we show that rapid electron losses, occurring within a timescale shorter than Jupiter's rotation, are driven by pitch angle scattering via whi
