Acute scrotum is unusual during the neonatal period. Testicular torsion is a surgical emergency aimed at salvaging the affected testis. Epididymo-orchitis is the main differential diagnosis, but few cases have been described in the newborn. Here, we report the case of a late-preterm infant who presented with late-onset group B streptococcal sepsis revealed by unilateral epididymo-orchitis.

Streptococcus agalactiae is a leading cause of bacterial sepsis and meningitis in neonates. FbsA, a fibrinogen receptor of S. agalactiae is highly repetitive protein with each repeat containing 16 amino acids. The protein sequence of FbsA shows no homology to any known fibrinogen binding protein from other bacterial species, making it a unique fibrinogen receptor. FbsA is cloned, expressed in E. coli and purified. The recombinant protein shows a laddering pattern in SDS-PAGE gel because of its poor stability in solution. The instability of the protein is probably because of the presence Gln-Gl

Detection of Streptococcus agalactiae in pregnant women's vagina and rectum and intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis administered to colonized women are currently recommended to prevent neonatal precocious infections by this organism. In turn, it is very important to select the culture media and adequate sample collection site for S. agalactiae detection in colonized women. To standardize this methods in laboratory, different culture media and procedures for S. agalactiae recovery in pregnant women with obstetric and gynecologic complications were compared. Vaginorectal and endocervical swab spe

Streptococcus agalactiae is a major cause of bacterial pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis in human neonates. During the course of infection, S. agalactiae adheres to a variety of epithelial cells but the underlying mechanisms are only poorly understood. The present report demonstrates the importance of the fibrinogen receptor FbsA for the streptococcal adherence and invasion of epithelial cells. Deletion of the fbsA gene in various S. agalactiae strains substantially reduced their binding of soluble fibrinogen and their adherence to and invasion of epithelial cells, indicating a role of FbsA in

During a period of 29 months positive hemocultures to Streptococcus agalactiae corresponding to eight adult patients have been observed. These bacteria were apparently responsible for the clinical picture in five patients. In other two patients S. agalactiae appeared in the course of a sepsis caused by other germ. The remaining patient had a transient bacteremia and no treatment was required. Septic shock and bacterial endocarditis were the cause of death in two patients. Six patients cured. Literature on this subject is reviewed and the better prognosis of sepsis due to S. agalactiae in adult

Streptococcus agalactiae are bacteria that can cause a range of infections, some of them life-threatening. Currently, antimicrobial resistance has become a global problem that puts public health at risk. Despite the widespread use of β-lactams, penicillin remains the first-line antimicrobial for the treatment of invasive S. agalactiae infections. However, reduced susceptibility and resistance to penicillin have been identified in several countries. Penicillin-binding proteins, mainly PBP2X, have been associated with reduced susceptibility to β-lactams in streptococci. The aim of this review is

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus [GBS]) may cause pneumonia or may colonize the respiratory tract, making its clinical significance uncertain when detected in respiratory specimens. This study aimed to assess whether clinicians interpreted GBS detected by the BIOFIRE Pneumonia Panel (BF-PP) as a pathogen implicated in pneumonia.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included adult patients hospitalized with suspected pneumonia at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, between September 2020 and February 2025. Cases were independently classified into pathogen and nonpathogen gro

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum (A. haemolyticum), a Gram-positive, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterium, is typically associated with pharyngitis and skin infections but can also cause severe, life-threatening infections such as sepsis and necrotizing fasciitis (NF), particularly in immunocompromised patients. We report a case of severe NF of the lower extremity caused by a mixed infection with A. haemolyticum and Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae) in a patient with diabetes mellitus. A 51-year-old male with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus presented with extensive swelling, necrosis, and bu

Streptococcus agalactiae, also known as Group B Streptococcus (GBS), is a predominant pathogen of neonatal sepsis, commonly associated with early-onset neonatal sepsis. GBS has also been associated with cases of late-onset sepsis potentially originating from the intestine. Previous findings have shown GBS can colonize the infant intestinal tract as part of the neonatal microbiota. To better understand GBS colonization dynamics in the neonatal intestine, we collected stool and milk samples from prematurely born neonates for identification of potential pathogens in the neonatal intestinal microb

Streptococcus agalactiae is a common constituent of the human flora. However, infection in immunocompetent adults is uncommon and the involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) or development of septic arthritis are exceedingly rare and by our knowledge, were only described simultaneously once in a retrospective study. We present the case of a 66-year-old woman with S. agalactiae bacteremia presenting meningitis and septic arthritis of the left shoulder. The patient presented to the emergency department with altered mental status and fever. Lumbar puncture revealed cerebral spine fluid (C

A tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA) is a relatively rare medical complication that results from an untreated/unrecognized ascending pelvic infection of the female genital tract. In a right-sided TOA, this clinical entity may mimic appendicitis on computed tomography (CT). In addition, both disease processes can present with pelvic pain, leukocytosis and fever. We present the case of a 47-year-old female with mid right-sided abdominal pain that was diagnosed on CT scan with an appendiceal abscess. She underwent CT-guided percutaneous drainage with interventional radiology. On Day 8, a CT limited study

A colloidal gold immunochromatographic strip was developed for rapid detection of Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae) infection in tilapia. The monoclonal antibodies (mAb) 4C12 and 3A9 were used to target S. agalactiae as colloidal gold-mAb conjugate and captured antibody, respectively. The colloidal gold immunochromatographic strip was assembled via routine procedures. Optimal pH and minimum antibody levels in the reaction system for gold colloidal-mAb 4C12 conjugation were pH 7.4 and 18μg/mL, respectively. Optimal concentrations of the captured antibody 3A9 and goat anti-mouse antibody

The Group B streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae) is a pathogen of increasing importance in human disease. We therefore studied the susceptibility of clinical isolates of S. agalactiae to penicillin G, erythromycin, azithromycin and clindamycin using National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards methodology, and we also determined the phenotypes of macrolide-lincosamide susceptibility and the resistance genes implicated in a group of selected isolates of the different phenotypes. We used 221 isolates collected between 1997 and 1999 in two Health Authority Areas in Móstoles and Granad

Streptococcosis is a highly contagious aquatic bacterial disease that poses a significant threat to tilapia. Vaccination is a well-known effective measure to prevent and control fish bacterial diseases. Among the various immunization methods, immersion vaccination is simple and can be widely used in aquaculture. Besides, nanocarrier delivery technology has been reported as an effective solution to improve the immune effect of immersion vaccine. In this study, the surface immunogenic protein (Sip) was proved to be conserved and potential to provide cross-immunoprotection for both Streptococcus

Magnesium (Mg2+) homeostasis is critical for bacterial survival and virulence. Streptococcus agalactiae is a major piscine and mammalian pathogen, yet the molecular mechanisms governing its Mg2+ acquisition remain undefined. Here, we identify and characterize CorA2 as an essential Mg2+ transporter in a hypervirulent S. agalactiae strain HN016. Through biochemical and genetic assays including a corA2 deletion mutant (ΔcorA2), a complemented strain, and structure-guided point mutants (GGGG gain of function and D206K loss of function), we demonstrate that CorA2 is essential for Mg2+ uptake. CorA2

Bacterial membrane lipids are critical for membrane bilayer formation, cell division, protein localization, stress responses, and pathogenesis. Despite their critical roles, membrane lipids have not been fully elucidated for many pathogens. Here, we report the discovery of a novel cationic glycolipid, lysyl-glucosyl-diacylglycerol (Lys-Glc-DAG), which is synthesized in high abundance by the bacterium Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS). To our knowledge, Lys-Glc-DAG is more positively charged than any other known lipids. Lys-Glc-DAG carries 2 positive net charges per molecule

Streptococcus agalactiae is a relevant cause of neonatal mortality. It can be transferred to infants via the vaginal tract and cause meningitis, pneumonia, arthritis, or sepsis, among other diseases. The cause of therapy ineffectiveness and infection recurrence is the growth of bacteria as biofilms. To date, several research teams have attempted to find a suitable medium for the cultivation of S. agalactiae biofilms. Among others, simulated vaginal fluid has been used; however, biofilm production in this medium has been found to be lower than that in tryptic soy broth. We have previously shown
