The Utility of Cinematherapy for Stuttering Intervention: An Exploratory Study.

This preliminary study explored the feasibility and benefits of using cinematherapy with adults who stutter to address affective and cognitive reactions to stuttering and their impact on the persons' life. A mixed methods research design was used to explore the impact of cinematherapy. Four clients completed a 4-week structured cinematherapy program. All clients completed two questionnaires: Unhelpful Thoughts and Beliefs about Stuttering and Overall Experience of the Speaker's Experience of Stuttering, before starting and after completing the program. At the end of the program, clients also c

Dutasteride in the long-term management of stuttering priapism.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to review our 12-year experience with the 5-α reductase inhibitor dutasteride as a potential long-term treatment option for stuttering priapism. Dutasteride has a uniquely long half-life of 35 days which offers a theoretical advantage as a chronic therapy for management of stuttering priapism. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients with stuttering priapism in our database from 2006-2018 treated with dutasteride. Men with concurrent use of medications other than dutasteride to treat stuttering priapism were excluded. Patients were started on a

Characteristics of adults who stutter by treatments sought.

Several treatment approaches are available for adults who stutter, including speech treatment, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) treatment for anxiety, and a combination of both. It is useful to determine whether any differences exist between adults who stutter enrolled in different types of treatment. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare demographic, speech, and psychological characteristics of adults who stutter enrolled in speech, psychological, and combined treatment programs. Participants were 288 adults who stuttered (18-80 years) enrolled in one of three different treatme

What Are the Options for the Treatment of Stuttering in Preschool Children?

Treatment of stuttering during the preschool years is considered to be the best prevention of persistent chronic stuttering; however, many clinicians do not feel comfortable treating stuttering and may be confused about choosing an intervention. This article summarizes the history of direct and indirect methodology for treatment of stuttering in preschool children. It provides an update of contemporary treatments and discusses issues related to the timing of treatment. Guidelines for choosing a level of treatment based on the risk of a preschool child continuing to stutter are discussed, with

Developmental Stuttering in Children Who Are Hard of Hearing.

PURPOSE: A number of studies with large sample sizes have reported lower prevalence of stuttering in children with significant hearing loss compared to children without hearing loss. This study used a parent questionnaire to investigate the characteristics of stuttering (e.g., incidence, prevalence, and age of onset) in children who are hard of hearing (CHH). METHOD: Three hundred three parents of CHH who participated in the Outcomes of Children With Hearing Loss study (Moeller & Tomblin, 2015) were sent questionnaires asking about their child's history of stuttering. RESULTS: One hundred ni

Event- and interval-based measurement of stuttering: a review.

BACKGROUND: Event- and interval-based measurements are two different ways of computing frequency of stuttering. Interval-based methodology emerged as an alternative measure to overcome problems associated with reproducibility in the event-based methodology. No review has been made to study the effect of methodological factors in interval-based absolute reliability data or to compute the agreement between the two methodologies in terms of inter-judge, intra-judge and accuracy (i.e., correspondence between raters' scores and an established criterion). AIMS: To provide a review related to reprod

Corpus callosum morphology in children who stutter.

UNLABELLED: Multiple studies have reported both functional and neuroanatomical differences between adults who stutter and their normally fluent peers. However, the reasons for these differences remain unclear although some developmental data suggest that structural brain differences may be present in school-age children who stutter. In the present study, the corpus callosum of children with persistent stuttering, children who recovered from stuttering and typically developing children between 9 and 12 years of age was compared to test if the presence of aberrant callosal morphology is implicat

Multilingual children who stutter: clinical issues.

UNLABELLED: Stuttering occurs across all languages and cultures. However, the impact of speaking more than one language on assessment and treatment of young children who stutter is not well documented. This paper discusses some of the challenges related to clinical issues pertaining to this population including (a) identifying stuttering in an unfamiliar language, (b) the influence of language proficiency, and (c) treatment of multilingual young children who stutter. The paper is written from the perspective of the author's experience treating multilingual children who stutter within the conte

An investigation into the personal financial costs associated with stuttering.

UNLABELLED: Stuttering has been found to deteriorate quality of life in psychological, emotional and social functioning domains. It is reasonable to assume then that stuttering would also be associated with economic consequences that may also challenge quality of life. Remarkably, the personal financial costs associated with stuttering in adults has rarely if ever been explored or investigated in the fluency disorders field. This study involved an assessment of the personal costs of stuttering and an investigation into determinants that may influence spending. Two hundred adults who stutter pa

Phonotactic probability effects in children who stutter.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of phonotactic probability, which is the frequency of different sound segments and segment sequences, on the overall fluency with which words are produced by preschool children who stutter (CWS) as well as to determine whether it has an effect on the type of stuttered disfluency produced. METHOD: A 500+ word language sample was obtained from 19 CWS. Each stuttered word was randomly paired with a fluently produced word that closely matched it in grammatical class, word length, familiarity, word and neighborhood frequency, and neig

Altered auditory feedback and the treatment of stuttering: a review.

UNLABELLED: Several authors have suggested that devices delivering altered auditory feedback (AAF) may be a viable treatment for adults and children who stutter. This paper reviews published, peer reviewed journal papers from the past 10 years that investigate the effect of AAF during different speaking conditions, tasks and situations. A review of that literature indicates that considerable experimental evidence and limited Phase 1 treatment outcome evidence has been accumulated about the effect of AAF on the speech of people who stutter. However, critical knowledge about the effect of AAF du

The effect of SpeechEasy on stuttering frequency in laboratory conditions.

UNLABELLED: The effect of SpeechEasy on stuttering frequency during speech produced in a laboratory setting was examined. Thirteen adults who stutter participated. Stuttering frequencies in two baseline conditions were compared to stuttering frequencies with the device fitted according to the manufacturer's protocol. The fitting protocol includes instructions for deliberate use of vowel prolongation. Relative to the initial baseline condition, stuttering was reduced by 74%, 36%, and 49% for reading, monologue, and conversation, respectively. In comparison, stuttering was reduced by 42%, 30%, a

Introduction to qualitative research and its application to stuttering.

BACKGROUND: Those engaged in research might argue that we are involved in a process of explaining the world to others and to ourselves. The way in which we go about that process differs. The kind of questions we are concerned about answering will determine the approach we use, the information we gather and how we analyse the data. Some research questions are best answered using qualitative methods. AIMS: To explain the place of qualitative research methods within the context of different approaches to scientific enquiry. To describe qualitative research through an examination of the character
