Tomography versus computed tomography for assessing step off in intraarticular distal radial fractures.

Computed tomography scans have supplanted conventional tomography for many applications and often are considered the imaging study of choice for assessing intraarticular distal radial fractures. Concern about cost containment in healthcare delivery prompts the question of whether the two studies provide comparable information and at what cost. Common intraarticular distal radial fractures were created in 12 lightly embalmed cadaveric specimens. The fractures were fixed with radiolucent Kirschner wires. Articular step off was measured with a caliper. Plain radiographs, computed tomography scans

Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Certain aspects of the use of CT, MR imaging and PET were evaluated in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) with the aim of determining whether these methods may provide practical guidance for improving the management of these patients. Subjective evaluation of the tumor pattern on CT images, and quantification of tracer uptake using 11C methionine (11C Met) and [18F] fluorodeoxyglucose (18FDG) PET in patients with NHL, were performed to determine their relations to malignancy grade. An inhomogeneous tumor pattern (I) was found on CT in 75% of high-grade tumors, whereas 68% of low-grade

Artificial intelligence in computed tomography imaging for pulmonary embolism: a narrative review from computed tomography pulmonary angiography to non-contrast computed tomography.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a common life-threatening cardiovascular disorder. Computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) is the diagnostic reference standard, but iodinated contrast use may be limited by renal insufficiency, allergy, or other patient factors. Non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) avoids contrast administration but has lower intrinsic diagnostic accuracy. This narrative review summarizes artificial intelligence (AI) applications for PE assessment across CTPA and NCCT, compares their clinical roles, and identifies evidence gaps for translation.

Computed tomography and positron emission tomography/computed tomography surveillance after combined modality treatment of supradiaphragmatic Hodgkin lymphoma: a clinical and economic perspective.

We studied the clinical benefits of radiological imaging, in the follow-up of patients after combined modality treatment for stage I/II classical supradiaphragmatic Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). Imaging data were collected for 78 adults treated during 1996-2008. Median follow-up was 4.6 years. Six of the nine relapses were detected clinically. On average, 31 imaging studies/patient were performed, with an estimated cost of $12 608/patient. Chest computed tomography (CT) scans accounted for 25%, abdominopelvic CT scans 41% and positron emission tomography (PET) or PET/CT scans 22% of this expense. Onl

Routine positron emission tomography and positron emission tomography/computed tomography in melanoma staging with positive sentinel node biopsy is of limited benefit.

Positron emission tomography (PET) is increasingly used for the staging and management of melanoma. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of PET or PET/ computed tomography (CT) as a routine procedure in patients with positive sentinel node biopsy (SNB). Thirty patients with melanoma of Breslow thickness greater than 1 mm who had PET or PET/CT scans performed within 100 days after a positive SNB were reviewed retrospectively. Two patients (6%) had a positive PET scan, none of which were melanoma related. The first patient had a synchronous neuroendocrine thyroid tumour and the second

High-resolution computed tomography with single-slice computed tomography and 16-channel multidetector computed tomography: a comparison regarding visibility and motion artifacts.

BACKGROUND: High-resolution computed tomography is the image procedure of choice in the evaluation of interstitial lung disease. Multidetector-row computed tomography provides the possibility of simultaneous reconstruction of thin and thick slices from the same raw data, acquired from one single series. Thus, it may be tempting to exclude the step-and-shoot series. PURPOSE: To compare high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT step-and-shoot) from single-slice CT (SSCT) and 16-channel multidetector CT (MDCT) in terms of visibility and motion artifacts, and to investigate whether thin images re

Usefulness of position emission tomography/computed tomography in a case of sarcoidosis with multiorgan involvement.

Sarcoidosis, a systemic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology, can affect any site in the body. A bone lesion was unexpectedly detected by fluorodeoxyglucose position emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT) in a patient with multiorgan sarcoidosis. FDG PET/CT should be considered for the detection of clinically silent lesions of sarcoidosis.

[A comparison of the value of magnetic resonance tomography and computed tomography in Nelson syndrome patients].

The hypophyses of 13 patients with Nelson syndrome following bilateral adrenalectomy were examined by MRI and CT. Diffuse enlargement of the hypophysis was demonstrated in 8 patients by CT and in 9 by MRI. Compared with CT, MRI provides better demonstration of tumour development, such as abnormal convexity of the cranial margin of the hypophysis (MRI 4/13, CT 1/13), displacement of the infundibulum (MRI 4/13, CT 0/13) or optic chiasm (MRI 2/13, CT 0/13). MRI also provides diagnostically important differentiation between scar tissue and recurrence of tumour following hypophysectomy (MRI 1/3, CT

Conventional tomography and computed tomography-are both methods necessary for evaluation of facial lesions?

108 patients with verified traumatic, inflammatory and neoplastic lesions in the facial region and the pharyngeal space were evaluated both with conventional tomography and CT. Subsequently an analysis was made as to whether both methods were complementary or at least partially replaceable by each other. In traumatic lesions transverse axial CT combined with frontal tomography yielded optimal information. For the diagnosis of inflammatory and neoplastic lesions CT was superior to tomography with the exception of lateral tomograms which contributed additional information to diseases of the sphe

Clinical significance of positron emission tomography-computed tomography in the classification of thymic tumors.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the possibility of positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET-CT) in identifying histological classification of thymic tumours. METHODS: Patients diagnosed as thymic tumours and accepted PET-CT scans were included. Thymic tumours were classified into three subgroups: low-risk thymoma (A, AB and B1), high-risk thymoma (B2, B3) and thymic carcinoma (TC). Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify potential factors differentiating the classification of thymic tumours. The receiver operating characteristic curve was applied to assess

Positron emission tomography/computed tomography as a method for detection and monitoring of laryngeal chondritis.

Infections of the laryngeal cartilages occur clinically as local pain, dysphonia, dysphagia or dyspnoea and may lead to destruction of the laryngeal skeleton. We present positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET-CT) as a new method for detection and monitoring of laryngotracheal chondritis. We prospectively analyzed all patients undergoing PET-CT examination, of whom we were clinically suspicious of laryngeal cartilage chondritis. When a chondritis had been confirmed by PET, therapy was started, and the course of inflammation was monitored. Three patients were selected, where appli

Positron emission tomography is superior to computed tomography for metastatic detection in melanoma patients.

BACKGROUND: Whole-body positron emission tomography (PET) provides diagnostic information not currently available with traditional imaging and may improve the accuracy of staging melanoma patients. METHODS: A retrospective cohort review was performed of 104 patients with primary or recurrent melanoma who underwent PET to determine sensitivity/specificity for metastatic detection compared with body computed tomography (CT). One hundred fifty-seven PET and 70 CT scans were analyzed, with a median patient follow-up of 24 months. Metastases were confirmed with positive histology (87.5%) or docume

[Computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance tomography (MRI) in diseases of the pelvic floor].

CT and MRI have become more frequently established in the diagnosis of the pelvis for the last few years. CT and even more MRI are technically essential for the diagnosis of problems of the pelvis like anal carcinoma, anal atresia, anal fistula of the anal canal and rectum. Modern technical equipment allow a scanning time of a few seconds, especially important in patients with bad condition.

Computed tomography and positron emission tomography in the pre-operative staging of oesophageal carcinoma.

UNLABELLED: Because patients with carcinoma of the oesophagus usually present with advanced disease and surgery has a high mortality with cure in less than 10% of patients, pre-operative staging to select appropriate patients is necessary. Computed tomography (CT) plays an important role in staging but has well recognized limitations. Positron emission tomography (PET) which provides physiological information may therefore be a better alternative. OBJECTIVE: To compare the findings of CT and positron emission tomography (PET) with 2-[18fluorine]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) in the pre-opera

[Possibilities of shoulder arthroscopy in comparison with magnetic resonance tomography and arthro-computerized tomography].

In the last 15 years the methods of examination of the shoulder have intensively expounded. According to a well documented retrospective study we describe the value of the shoulder arthroscopy and its correlation to MRI and arthro-CT findings. MRI represents nowadays the best way of exploring rotator cuff lesions and of investigating an impingement syndrome. Associated with a contrast medium its ability to clear up an anterior or posterior shoulder instability is now superior to the arthro-CT's. The arthroscopy allows the dynamic exploration of the joint and can be used not only as a diagnosti

[Magnetic resonance tomography of focal liver lesions in comparison with computed tomography and sonography].

The results of magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) performed in 37 patients with predominantly solitary intrahepatic space-occupying masses are presented. Examinations were carried out with a superconducting magnet operating at a field strength of 0.35 Tesla. The majority of intrahepatic masses exhibited a well distinguishable signal amplification compared to normal hepatic parenchyma when T2 weighted sequences were used. For a further differentiation of the lesion, however, T1 and T2 weighted sequences have to be performed. In all cases diagnostic value of MRT is compared to that of sonograph
