We develop a Stockmayer fluid model for molecular dynamics simulations of ionic liquids that captures molecular polarization, ionic conductivity, viscosity, and glass transition temperature, using ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) as an example. The ions in EAN are treated as spheres interacting via the Lennard-Jones potential with an embedded point charge and a permanent dipole moment. We show that our simulation results for EAN are consistent with experimental data and then explore the effects of the molecular parameters on the viscosity of ionic liquids. Our results indicate that viscosity monoto

Lamin A/C is a well-established key contributor to nuclear stiffness and its role in nucleus mechanical properties has been extensively studied. However, its impact on whole-cell mechanics has been poorly addressed, particularly concerning measurable physical parameters. In this study, we combined microfluidic experiments with theoretical analyses to quantitatively estimate the whole-cell mechanical properties. This allowed us to characterize the mechanical changes induced in cells by lamin A/C alterations and prelamin A accumulation resulting from atazanavir treatment or lipodystrophy-associa

Typhoid fever (TF) is a systemic infection caused by Salmonella Typhi (Salmonella Enterica) transmitted through contaminated water, food, or contact with infected individuals. In various infectious diseases, blood viscosity (BV) is affected by changes in hemoglobin concentrations and acute phase reactants. Inflammatory responses can lead to elevated plasma protein levels and further affect BV. This study aimed to investigate BV changes in patients with acute TF. A cross-sectional study was performed involving 55 patients with acute TF compared to 38 healthy controls. BV and inflammatory parame

We proposed to monitor the early stage of alcohol-induced liver injury through quantitatively detecting Golgi viscosity. Therefore, the first Golgi-targeted fluorescent rotor (GA-Vis) was developed. With the aid of GA-Vis, the changes in Golgi viscosity during alcohol-induced liver injury were quantitatively evaluated by fluorescence lifetime imaging in live cells and zebrafish. GA-Vis was qualified as a practical tool for future diagnoses of alcohol-induced liver injury.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is characterized by a dysfunctional immune response and abnormal blood rheology that contribute to endothelial dysfunction and thrombotic complications. Whole blood viscosity (WBV) is a clinically validated measure of blood rheology and an established predictor of cardiovascular risk. We hypothesize that increased WBV is associated with mortality among patients hospitalized with COVID-19.
OBJECTIVES: This study sought to determine the association between estimated BV (eBV) and mortality among hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
METHODS: The study p

BACKGROUND: High-viscosity (HV) bone cements have been formulated to offer potentially advantageous handling characteristics. However, alteration in the handling characteristics could influence implant fixation and survival. The primary objective of this study was to use radiostereometric analysis after total knee arthroplasty to assess the migration of the Triathlon tibial component fixed with HV cement (Simplex HV).
METHODS: Twenty-three patients were followed for two years with radiostereometric analysis examinations at 6 visits. Migration was compared with published thresholds and with a

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged cold-water immersion (CWI) has the potential to cause significant hypothermia and haemoconcentration; both of which have previously been shown to independently increase blood viscosity in vitro. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of CWI on blood viscosity and examine the relative contribution of decreased blood temperature and haemoconcentration.
METHODS: Ten healthy volunteers were immersed to mid-sternum in 10°C water for 90 minutes. Gastrointestinal (GI) temperature, haematocrit (Hct), and blood viscosity were measured pre- and post-CWI.
RESULTS:

OBJECTIVES: Removal of secretions from the subglottic space, which is the larynx cavity below the glottis that contains the vocal cords, reduces the risk for ventilator associated pneumonia. Relationships between factors associated with subglottic secretion volume and viscosity have not been investigated. Subglottic secretions may have a possible link with systemic volume status and oral cavity hydration. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among systemic volume, oral cavity hydration, and subglottic secretion (SS) volume and viscosity in mechanically ventilated adults.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanisms of aspiration with respect to the viscosity of ingested material in patients with dysphagia. Seventy patients with dysphagia underwent videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS) between May 1, 2009 and September 30, 2009. Based on the findings of the VFSS, patients were divided into three groups: a thick-fluid aspiration group, a thin-fluid aspiration group, and a no-aspiration group. Kinematic analyses were performed during thick-fluid swallowing. Among our 70 patients, 23 had thick-fluid aspiration, 20 had thin-fluid aspiration, and 2

A flyer-impact technique, different from the explosive method of [Sakharov et al., Sov. Phys. Dokl. 9, 1091 (1965)], is developed to investigate the viscosity of shocked metals. The shock wave with a front of sinusoidal perturbation is induced by the sinusoidal profile of the impact surface of the sample by use of two-stage light-gas gun. The oscillatory damping process of the perturbation amplitude is monitored by electric pins. Two damping curves (perturbation amplitude relative to its initial value versus propagated distance relative to the wavelength of sinusoidal perturbation) of aluminum

Hemorheological studies lead to the axiom that high plasma viscosity is detrimental and that it is beneficial to lower blood viscosity, a precept embodied in the practice of hemodilution, where improved perfusion is attributed to the lowering of blood viscosity. Hemodilution is limited by the transfusion trigger, hemoglobin content of blood of about 7-8 g/dl, which indicates when further volume replacements must restore oxygen carrying capacity with red blood cells (RBC). However, oxygen consumption and delivery are not compromised upon passing this landmark. The reduced blood viscosity does n

The precise stimulus that induces vasovagal syncope is still unclear. We have previously demonstrated that the peripheral distribution of blood volume (venous pooling) is a strong predictor of tilt induced vasovagal reaction. We hypothesized that an increase in venous pooling during tilt accentuates the measured increase in blood viscosity. This hypothesis is based on the previously demonstrated increase in venous pressure and subsequent increase in transcapillary fluid transudation during tilt. The increased blood viscosity, in turn, increases vascular shear rate, which may alter the vasocons

The blood viscosity and related factors were determined in 31 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and 30 normal subjects. It was found that (1) the blood viscosity was significantly higher in the POAG group than in the normal controls, as were also the plasma viscosity, the hematocrit, the fibrinogen content, the index of erythrocyte aggregation and the blood yielding stress, and (2) there was no difference in the value of TK which was a measure of erythrocyte deformability between the two groups. The study showed that patients with glaucoma had blood hyperviscosity which could be

To investigate membrane lipid abnormalities and their possible role in copper deficiency anemia, we studied lipids, osmotic fragility, and viscosity of red blood cells (RBCs) of rats fed diets containing 1.1 mg Cu/kg (deficient, Cu-) and 6.0 mg Cu/kg (supplemented, Cu+) at age 3 wk for 9 wk. Data show an increase in cholesterol of 43% and in phospholipids of 38% per cell in Cu- compared with Cu+ rats. Thin-layer chromatography of RBC lipids showed an increased amount of phospholipid-malonyldialdehyde adduct in Cu- (0.70 +/- 0.35% [means +/- SD] of total phospholipids) compared with Cu+ (0.29 +

Based on studies by others, it appears that Legg-Perthes disease is an avascular necrosis of the femoral head due to occlusion of the blood supply. In an effort to delineate the pathogenesis of the disorder, we determined blood viscosity and percent platelet aggregation in 22 patients with Legg-Perthes disease and 21 control patients. Statistically significant higher blood viscosities were found in our patients with Legg-Perthes when compared with normals. No difference was found in the platelet aggregation studies. In accordance with Poiseuille's law, we propose that increased blood viscosity

This work examines the origin of the curious variation in the pressure activation volume with increasing pressure, where it initially decreases to a minimum before rising again. It has been shown that the initial decrease arises from compression of the fluid until it reaches a jamming packing fraction, at which point the system starts to exhibit elastic behavior, resulting in an increase in activation volume with further pressure. This regime is analyzed using a modification of the so-called shoving model, in which the extra volume required for molecular rearrangement is accommodated by elasti

Abnormal structure or function of the nucleolus can lead to dynamic imbalances in intracellular viscosity, which is a core pathological feature of major diseases, including inflammation and cancer. However, existing fluorescent probes face challenges in synchronously and accurately detecting nucleolar RNA dynamics and viscosity changes. Therefore, in this study, probes NK-1 and NK-2, which specifically target the nucleolus, were developed and synthesized. Both probes incorporate a donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) structure with a positively charged quinolinium salt as the core, enabling specific RNA r

We present RheoKit, a workflow that automates viscosity calculations via the Green-Kubo formalism in Tinker 25 and Tinker-HP. Additionally, we introduce new user-facing enhancements to Tinker 25 and Tinker-HP that expose stress tensor data upon request. We validate the implementation and workflow by calculating the viscosity of water, ethanol, isopropanol, and toluene using the AMOEBA polarizable force field. Our results confirm the accuracy of our implementation and suggest that AMOEBA may benefit from parameter tuning for improved experimental agreement.
