A range of challenges exists regarding vitreoretinal (VR) surgical services in resource-limited settings, including Sierra Leone. As a result, retinal pathologies may contribute to vision loss and blindness. In the wake of the 2013 to 2016 outbreak of Ebola virus disease in West Africa, gaps in ophthalmic care were underscored as survivors were experiencing a constellation of sequelae, including uveitis and VR disease. Given the unmet needs in addressing VR disease, systems for retinal surgical care were required. To further understand long-term ocular complications in Ebola survivors and mole

BACKGROUND: Eyes sustaining open globe trauma are at high risk of severe visual impairment. Proliferative vitreoretinopathy is the most common cause of retinal detachment and visual loss in eyes with open globe trauma. There is evidence from experimental studies and pilot clinical trials that the use of adjunctive steroid medication triamcinolone acetonide can reduce the incidence of proliferative vitreoretinopathy and improve outcomes of surgery for open globe trauma.
OBJECTIVE: The Adjunctive Steroid Combination in Ocular Trauma or ASCOT study aimed to investigate the clinical effectiveness

INTRODUCTION: Compared with sub-Tenon's anesthesia (STA), trans-Tenon's capsule retrobulbar anesthesia (TTRBA) provides rapid and complete akinesia. However, excessive anesthetic volume may cause complications such as choroidal detachment (CD).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old man who had previously undergone cataract surgery presented with rapidly progressive visual field constriction in the right eye. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/16; intraocular pressure, 13 mm Hg; and axial length, 29.99 mm. Multiple retinal breaks were detected in the superior and nasal retina, with reti

Background/Objectives: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are common after general anesthesia (GA) and, in patients undergoing vitreoretinal surgery, may be triggered by the oculocardiac reflex (OCR) leading to the oculoemetic reflex (OER). Inadequate dosing of intravenous rescue opioid analgesics may further provoke OCR. Adequacy of Anesthesia (AoA) monitoring enables optimized titration of intravenous rescue opioid analgesics, while preemptive intravenous or peribulbar analgesia may reduce opioid use. This study evaluated the impact of preemptive paracetamol or peribulbar block (PBB) c

BACKGROUND: Cases of ocular irritation have been observed after early clinical trials using perfluorohexyloctane (F6H8) as endotamponade. In our clinic two of three eyes developed severe inflammatory-like reactions after intermediate-term tamponade. These cases will be depicted, serving as background for the experimental study. To elucidate possible toxic effects of F6H8 on different ocular cell types and corneal tissue we applied our previously established in vitro models to investigate effects of F6H8 on cultured ocular cells in comparison with perfluorodecaline.

BACKGROUND: Eyes sustaining open globe trauma are at high risk of severe visual impairment. Ocular injuries which result in visual loss invariably affect the posterior segment of the eye, and prevention of visual loss involves posterior segment (vitreoretinal) surgery. Despite improvements in vitreoretinal surgical techniques, outcomes in these patients remain unsatisfactory, and development of the intraocular scarring response proliferative vitreoretinopathy is the leading cause.
