Tests of gender feelings and behavior in homosexuality, transvestism and transsexualism.

Categorized 64 male transsexual and transvestite Ss into two groups on the basis of the strength of their feminine gender identity. The two groups were compared to a homosexual group and a control group on four tests designed to measure gender feelings and behavior, namely: the California Personality Inventory Femininity Scale, the Draw-A-Person test, the Franck Drawing Completion test, and the Information and Vocabulary subtests of the WAIS. It was found that the CPI-Fe scale and DAP test significantly correlate with the degree of feminine gender identity reported by the Ss. However, the two

Comprehension of sarcasm, metaphor and simile in Williams syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Although people with Williams syndrome (WS) are often characterized as friendly and sociable with relatively good general language abilities, there is emerging evidence of pragmatic difficulties and trouble comprehending aspects of non-literal language. AIMS: The main aim was to investigate the comprehension of sarcasm, metaphor and simile in WS relative to typically developing controls. A secondary aim was to examine the association between non-literal language comprehension and a range of other cognitive abilities, both in WS and in the typically developing population. METHODS

Vocabulary comprehension and strategies in name construction among children using aided communication.

Vocabulary learning reflects the language experiences of the child, both in typical and atypical development, although the vocabulary development of children who use aided communication may differ from children who use natural speech. This study compared the performance of children using aided communication with that of peers using natural speech on two measures of vocabulary knowledge: comprehension of graphic symbols and labeling of common objects. There were 92 participants not considered intellectually disabled in the aided group. The reference group consisted of 60 participants without kn

Language profiles in children with Down syndrome and children with language impairment: implications for early intervention.

This study investigated early language profiles in two groups of children with developmental disability: children with Down Syndrome (DS, n=13) and children with Language Impairment (LI, n=16). Vocabulary and grammatical skills in the two groups were assessed and compared to language skills of typically developing (TD) children matched on size of either their receptive or expressive vocabulary (n=58). The study aimed to establish if language development in these groups is delayed or fundamentally different than the TD groups, and if the group with DS showed a similar language profile to the gr

Italian children with dyslexia are also poor in reading English words, but accurate in reading English pseudowords.

It has been argued that children with dyslexia (DC) are poor at learning a foreign language (L2) and, in particular, reading foreign words. This assumption is so general that an Italian law (law 170, October, 2010) has established that DC may be completely exempted from foreign language learning and, in any case, should not be engaged in tuition via written material. However, evidence of L2 difficulties of DC is scarce and, in particular, absent for Italian children learning English. This absence of data is problematic, as it precludes information on the pattern of weaknesses and strengths, wh

Sentence production in students with dyslexia.

BACKGROUND: While spoken language deficits have been identified in children with developmental dyslexia, microanalysis of sentence production proficiency in these children is a largely unexplored area. AIMS: The current study examines proficiency of syntactic production in children and young adults with dyslexia and typically developing age-matched controls on a constrained sentence production task targeting two advanced argument structures, theme-experiencer verbs and irregular past participles. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Participants aged between 8 and 22 years produced sentences that included

Early linguistic abilities of Italian children with Williams syndrome.

Previous studies of linguistic and memory abilities in Italian-speaking children with Williams syndrome (WS) and Down syndrome (DS)are briefly reviewed. New data on linguistic performance of 6 Italian children with WS between 3 and 6 years of age are presented and compared with data on linguistic performance of 6 children with DS selected from a larger sample and matched for chronological age and vocabulary size and of 6 typically developing (TD) younger children matched for mental age and vocabulary size. The language measures also included a parent report of early phrase structure, a naming

ERPs While Judging Meaningfulness of Sentences With and Without Homonym or Morpheme Spelling Foils: Comparing 4th to 9th Graders With and Without Spelling Disabilities.

Thirteen students with and twelve students without spelling disabilities judged whether sentences (1/3 all correct spellings, 1/3 with homonym foil, 1/3 with morpheme foil) were meaningful while event-related potentials (ERPs) were measured with EGI Geodesic EEG System 300 (128-channel hydro-cell nets). For N400, Rapid Automatic Switching (RAS) correlated with comprehending sentences with homonym foils in control group but with morpheme foils in SLD group. For P600, dictated spelling correlated with comprehending sentences with morpheme foils in the control group but solving anagrams with homo

A set of ontologies to drive tools for the control of vector-borne diseases.

We are developing a set of ontologies dealing with vector-borne diseases as well as the arthropod vectors that transmit them. After building ontologies for mosquito and tick anatomy we continued this project with an ontology of insecticide resistance followed by a series of ontologies that describe malaria as well as physiological processes of mosquitoes that are relevant to, and involved in, disease transmission. These will later be expanded to encompass other vector-borne diseases as well as non-mosquito vectors. The aim of the whole undertaking, which is worked out in the frame of the inter

Size does not matter, frequency does: sensitivity to orthographic neighbors in normal and dyslexic readers.

This study examined the influence of the number of orthographically similar candidates, neighborhood size, on the word and pseudoword naming performance of normal, dyslexic, and beginning readers. Participants were 23 Dutch dyslexic fourth-graders matched to 23 fourth-grade chronological age controls and 17 second-grade reading age controls. Unexpectedly, neighborhood size had similar effects in all groups: It did not affect word naming and facilitated the naming of pseudowords. However, the presence of a high-frequency neighbor had different effects. In contrast to normal readers, words with

Direct comparison of MEDCIN and SNOMED CT for representation of a general medical evaluation template.

BACKGROUND: Two candidate terminologies to support entry of general medical data are SNOMED CT and MEDCIN. We compare the ability of SNOMED CT and MEDCIN to represent concepts and interface terms from a VA general medical examination template. METHODS: We parsed the VA general medical evaluation template and mapped the resulting expressions into SNOMED CT and MEDCIN. Internists conducted double independent reviews on 864 expressions. Exact concept level matches were used to evaluate reference coverage. Exact term level matches were required for interface terms. RESULTS: Sensitivity of SNOMED

In the United States, BI-RADS (Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System) has been set up as a quality assurance system for better communication between professionals and for the follow-up of breast screening programs. It has become a reference in the field of mammographic imaging and has been adopted by several countries throughout the world. It has been translated in French. The aim of this article is to discuss the difficulties in using it in the French radiologic communities. There are few problems with vocabulary excepted for microcalcifications. BI-RADS includes a guidance chapter giving

Global surgical landscape and outcomes in Crohn's disease in the biologics era: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Despite numerous studies on surgical outcomes in Crohn's disease (CD), global evidence remains fragmented, with limited synthesis of data on international surgical trends, regional variations and comparative outcomes. This systematic review aims to evaluate the rates of CD-related surgeries in the biologic era and to identify evidence gaps to inform future surgical strategies. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A comprehensive search will be conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, and CINAHL from 9 February 2015 to 10 February 2025. A combination of controlled vocabulary and free-text terms related to

No. 249-Asymptomatic Endometrial Thickening.

OBJECTIVE: To formulate clinical recommendations for the assessment of endometrial thickening when it is found on ultrasound in a postmenopausal patient without bleeding. OUTCOMES: Ensure that women with asymptomatic thickening and endometrial polyps found on ultrasound are managed appropriately. EVIDENCE: Published literature was retrieved through searches of English language articles from the EMBASE, Cochrane, and PubMed databases for relevant peer-reviewed articles dating from 1970 to 2009, using appropriate controlled vocabulary (e.g., "asymptomatic endometrial thickness," "endometrial c

Text Mining of Symptom Descriptions in the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System for Human Papillomavirus Vaccination.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organizationhas reaffirmed the efficacy and safety of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines in a statement. While vaccine safety has been extensively studied, little is known about the descriptive language used in reports of adverse events. The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), managed by the US Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, collects free-text narratives on adverse events following vaccination. This study aimed to examine these narratives to describe vocabulary patterns associated with HPV vaccination

Differences in Growth Reading Patterns for at-Risk Spanish-Monolingual Children as a Function of a Tier 2 Intervention.

The present study compares the patterns of growth of beginning reading skills (i.e., phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension) of Spanish speaking monolingual students who received a Tier 2 reading intervention with students who did not receive the intervention. All the students in grades K-2 were screened at the beginning of the year to confirm their risk status. A quasi-experimental longitudinal design was used: the treatment group received a supplemental program in small groups of 3 to 5 students, for 30 minutes daily from November to June. The control group did no

The language abilities of bilingual children with Down syndrome.

Children with Down syndrome (DS) have cognitive disabilities resulting from trisomy 21. Language-learning difficulties, especially expressive language problems, are an important component of the phenotype of this population. Many individuals with DS are born into bilingual environments. To date, however, there is almost no information available regarding the capacity of these individuals to acquire more than 1 language. The present study compared the language abilities of 8 children with DS being raised bilingually with those of 3 control groups matched on developmental level: monolingual chil

REWARD-an open-source framework for identifying the unknown benefits of existing medications to inform drug discovery, development, and repurposing.

OBJECTIVES: The potential of "big data" in health research remains largely untapped, particularly concerning real-world data sources such as administrative health data and electronic medical records. While healthcare insurance claims data have been essential for assessing medication safety and effectiveness within indicated patient populations, exploring broader drug-outcome associations could uncover significant insights. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The REWARD (REal-World Evidence and Research of Drug performance) framework was established to perform large-scale analytics on medication benefits b
